As soon as you glide down over the sparkling turquoise lagoon and step onto a runway dwarfed by two imposing basalt mountains, you realise that LHI is a serene spectacular place to relax and unwind. We were greeted personally by the charming owner of Pinetrees, Jim McFadgen. He took us for a little tour in his minibus, telling us a wealth of information on the way to the resort. We really felt like we were staying with friends, as the staff were so polite and accommodating. The delicious meals were 5 star gourmet standard and the seafood could not have been fresher! I loved sunset drinks at the boatshed on lagoon beach, with attentive staff circulating platters of tasty canapes. We also enjoyed the BBQ lunch option, where staff deliver an esky chock full of yummy food to any beach you choose, then pick it all up later. Every morning I walked 1km up Transit Hill directly behind the resort to enjoy a spectacular 360 degree view as I did my stretches...and offset the calories I enjoyed the day before. I HIGHLY recommend this resort as the most comprehensive way I have found to relax and enjoy a holiday. Please don't tell too many people!

Room Tip: The Transit Hill rooms are my choice.

Husband and I had a lunch buffet at Pinetrees - due to everything being so expensive due to transport of food etc. Pinetrees was definitely good money for value for meals. Especially the lunches. Did not stay here so cannot comment on accommodation.

Booked and visited for a casual evening meal. Comments about arriving too early, drinks served reluctantly. We were made to feel unwelcome and out of place because we were not staying at Pinetrees, even to resident guests having placename cards on their reserved tables in the dining room! Food was delicious and reasonably priced, just spoiled by poor service standards.

I will preface this review by saying that if you object in any way to being told at which table to sit for meals, at what time to eat, or to deciding at brekkie what you'll be doing that day and hence where and how you want to have lunch, don't go to Pinetrees. Likewise, if you need to have mobile phone coverage, wireless internet, TV or the day's newspapers, don't go to Pinetrees (or Lord Howe Island in general). However, if you fancy the idea of letting go, total technology detox, not having to make too many decisions, and eating frequent delicious meals while being treated like a member of the family, then Pinetrees may just be what you're looking for.
Lord Howe Island to me is like a cross between Jurassic Park and a social experiment putting a couple of hundred people on a remote island and telling them to make do and be nice to each other. The scenery is dramatic; palms, ferns, towering mountains, fish literally leaping from the ocean, an abundance of birds of types not seen on the mainland, and hardly any people. Those that are there find no locks on doors, a speed limit of 25 km an hour for the few cars there are, mostly the pushbike as a form of travel, and honesty boxes for snorkel hire gear or drinks at the boatshed from the well stocked fridge. Everyone acknowledges everyone else's existence when you pass in the road, and strangers strike up conversations. It is the most wonderful place to really, truly get away from it all.
The lodge has been family owned since it was established 100 years ago, and current managers Dani and Luke do a tireless job of running Pinetrees, seemingly omnipresent to meet the needs of the guests. Full of suggestions, the service is warm and welcoming from the moment you are picked up cheerfully at the airport, to when you are dropped off like long lost friends at the end of the stay. The staff learn to know you at least by room number, if not by name, and remember to enquire at dinner about what you had told them at breakfast that you'd be doing for the day. Staying at Pinetrees means full board, and the chefs churn out plentiful high quality food for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner - and there is also the option of taking a packed lunch, or having an esky delivered to one of the free BBQs around the island (and later collected) if you so wish. There is alot of food, difficult to resist, but the daytime activities help to burn off brekkie and build an appetite for dinner. Guests gather in the communal lounge at the end of the day, or at the beachside boathouse, to trade stories and sip pre dinner drinks. Bottles of wine purchased to have with dinner can be resealed and kept to the next day, a great idea. While we were there, it was also one of their "Food and Wine" weeks, with cooking demos by Tom Kime (Sydney based British chef, focussed on sustainable fish dishes) each day, and wine tasting, hosted by Luke, before dinner. An added bonus, and a great idea.
There are a variety of room options; we stayed in a Garden Cottage: spacious, clean, but it must be said, functional rather than luxurious. That said, you don't go to Lord Howe to be inside.
Pinetrees caters for all - families with children, the older generation (many of whom were return visitors to Pinetrees having come 40 or so years earlier), and younger couples. There is something for everyone.
We ended up having to stay an extra night, after our plane out was cancelled due to monsoonal rain. We didn't complain (!), and settled in for another lovely dinner, and another comfortable night. Perhaps one day we'll be back, but in the meantime, please go and see for yourself - Lord Howe Island and Pinetrees - a stay to remember.

Four ladies went to celebrate their 80th birthdays. It was the first time any of us had been to Lord Howe, though my mother spoke fondly of a holiday at Pinetrees in her youth when she travelled by sea plane. Unfortunately we weren't up to cycling but we walked extensively despite two being on walking sticks. We had some wonderful swims in the clear warm sea. The atmosphere was so clean and beautiful, as was the scenery. Unfortunately the weather was showerey and windy but the temperature was mild. We had a great walk in the forest, a fabulous bus trip around the island, and a boat trip looking for turtles. We loved the quiet atmosphere of Pinetrees and the food was fabulous. We are coming back soon.

Room Tip: Our rooms were clean and comfortable. We loved the flowers as a welcome toughh.

Pinetrees Lodge has been in the management of the same family for now 6 generations.

A great location on LHI within easy walking and cycling distance of everything . A true old world holiday lodge with friendly personal service and a great lounge with open fire each evening . Good tennis court and boat shed with bar on the foreshore of the lagoon .

The food was all inclusive (all meals0 and was really great with excellent quality and over generous quantities. The local seafood (Lunch on Fridays) and dinner (on Monday nights) was to die for .

The rooms are Motel like with private facilities and well maintained.

No televisions, no mobile phones here - which most guests found wondeful .

A well stocked bar at reasonable prices . Pinetrees pick you up and return you to the Airport on your day of departure .

This place is not the RITZ but your old style Guest House with lots of character and charm, run by a well managed team . Real value for money and really relaxing.

Room Tip: The Transit Hill rooms have a nice outlook and private verandahs onto the rear garden.
