Owner description: A unique gallery of over 350 sandstone carvings plus murals painted on the sandstone walls in the sandstone level above the opal level of an old opal mine. Ron Canlin is the artist of this amazing attraction, 12 years passion and still carving daily, a real work in progress. After touring the carvings, Trevor Hudson with 30 years experience in mining and prospecting then takes you down to 2nd level where he will draw on his wealth of knowledge to give you a very informative talk on the geology and formation of opal, the drives and shafts were hand dug by the old timers over the past 100 years. Not to be missed, winner of the NSW 2008 Hidden Jewel award.

This was one of the best things we have ever seen. We hope Ron continues to sculpture for many more years.

An amazing place to visit. Worth the entrance fee. Wonderful carvings and great to see. Staff was knowledgeable and with great stories. Came home with a free DVD!

From the top you do not know what treasures are under the ground. Not only can you see how opal is mined but enjoy the carving Ron Canlin who has created sculptures through the mining passages. Such a variety of sculptures too from the last supper to batman and Michael Jackson. You can wander around at your leisure and enjoy a cup of coffee and also buy opals if you wish. Most enjoyable and well worth a visit.

Very interesting to learn about how the opal is mined and wonder around so many passages. The carvings were incredible and made the underground setting seem even more fantastical.

We almost didn't visit... but so glad that we did! We chose to tour both levels - top level is just amazing. For a novice sculptor, Ron has amazing talent, and the variety of sculptures was mind-boggling. We loved the opportunity to take our time and wander through the tunnels in both directions at our own pace. The tour of the lower level satisfied our desire to see what a working opal mine looks like below ground - the guide was a miner himself and had provided wonderful insight into not only the mining methods, but the challenges of the mining lifestyle.
Much more than just a curiosity - a must-see while visiting Lightning Ridge.
