Owner description: A unique gallery of over 350 sandstone carvings plus murals painted on the sandstone walls in the sandstone level above the opal level of an old opal mine. Ron Canlin is the artist of this amazing attraction, 12 years passion and still carving daily, a real work in progress. After touring the carvings, Trevor Hudson with 30 years experience in mining and prospecting then takes you down to 2nd level where he will draw on his wealth of knowledge to give you a very informative talk on the geology and formation of opal, the drives and shafts were hand dug by the old timers over the past 100 years. Not to be missed, winner of the NSW 2008 Hidden Jewel award.

Lightning Ridge is a very different place to visit as a Tourist. We had read about the Chambers of the Black Hand before we reached Lightning Ridge and had decided a visit was a must. Well it didn't let us down, an old underground Opal Mine turned into a myriad of sandstone sculptures along the old drives, examples were a giant Buddha, Super Heroes, the Last Supper and many many more. We were fortunate to be there when the Artist was there, so he gave us a quick explanation on how it all started. Some of the Sculptures were painted, but the whole effect was quite incredible and everywhere you looked you could see something different. We joined in a tour which took us down to the next level where the Opals were mined previously and we were given a general explanation on what they looked for when searching for Opals. Of course, the last part is the shop where you can buy Opals. All in all, really worth a visit.

Brilliant! Is a must do. To meet the person who did all the carvings was fantastic. Purchased a most exquisite opal to bout.

What an amazing place - good and varied art work carved in rock and all under ground. An array of opals as good as anywhere in Lightning Ridge. A few stairs to travel, but a lift is also available. Do not miss

If you are interested in seeing a working mine, this is not the one. This mine never really produced much opal. The main event is the artist and sculptures. Weird but wonderful - which just about sums up why we loved Lightning Ridge so much.
