“Straight from the jar and freezer”
Reviewed January 5, 2013

We just had dinner there tonight. Even without comparing with the excellent indian cuisine you find in the UK, The Curry sauce jars from Coles or Woolworth taste more authentic than the food served at the Taj.

Our suspicion was raised as soon as we ordered. We asked for peshwari naans, only to be told they had run out and would not have any until next week! It just reflects the overall quality of the place. Our main dishes were served 5 minutes after we ordered. To some, this will be a positive, but when you claim to produce authentic cuisine, it should take a little more than 5 minutes to put this together. The taste just confirmed our suspicions. My chicken palak ( marinated with Indian spices and cooked in a curry made with pureed fresh English spinach, nuts, coriander..... Really??) looked and tasted like pieces of chicken thrown into defrosted chopped spinach with some tomato cubes. So tasteless it is laughable. The chicken tikka masala was no better...

$60 for 4 popadums, mixed pickles ( even the raita was out of a jar), our 2 mains, plain naans, and 2 beers... Reasonably priced if you are just looking for quantity... Extortion for something you could make at home and better!

The only positive is the service. Very friendly and welcoming, without being too much.

Shame the same customer-friendly attitude isn't applied to making the food taste as it should.

“Tasteless Orange Sauce !”
Reviewed December 14, 2012

Stayed at Jervis Bay Caravan Park 8th and 9th December 2012...Had seen this restaurant on the way back from exploring the area so later that evening ordered a takeaway.
Chicken Tikka Masala, Shajani Beef ( with Almond), Prawn Malabar ( With coconut ), Aloo Matar Tamatar (Potatoes and Peas)..Garlic and a Peshwari Naan..Saffron Rice..Total amount $84...
.I should have been warned when a fairly busy town that had most places filled but this place only had one couple sitting in.

On returning to eat this wonderful sounding feast I was shocked to see the same bright (tasteless) orange sauce in all the containers.
A splash of coconut milk and a few almonds thrown into the mix DOES not constitute a spice mix.
Also the delicate blend of fresh herbs as described is not a sprinkling of spring onion stalks..I would have thought fresh mint and coriander the norm which was so noticeable by it’s absence.
The naan and rice ( not saffron but cheaper turmeric ) which was probably bought in so was an acceptable standard.
The small amount of beef contained large amounts of gristle, which is shocking considering the quality of beef in Australia is outstanding.. How could 5 prawns be so tasteless, Tikka Masala:.small cubes of chicken that were so dry and just thrown into the sauce.
All this so far removed from the promise of the menu...

Anybody thinking about having a takeout from this place, I will not call it a restaurant, is advised to visit the Coles in the area and buy their ready meals which are far superior to the items we were served.

I am aware that there are conflicting reports on here so are there different cooks I wonder, in particular the comments about the best curry that had been eaten. better than Bradford or London !!.....( I doubt that very much ).
I wonder if one of them needs to retrained or be replaced.
Perhaps sounds harsh but very expensive for poor food.

“Great, authentic Indian food, good value”
Reviewed October 22, 2012

As a couple we shared two curries, a naan bread and rice. All were delicious and filling. Having sampled some excellent Indian/Bangladeshi dishes from highly regarded restaurants in Bradford, UK and Brick Lane, East London I can say the chef is excellent here

“Not very authentic Indian food. Not an Indian person in sight!”
Reviewed June 10, 2012

We do love Indian food and this place was such a let down. The funny thing was we knew this even before we went in but we thought we would give it a try anyway, we had a bit of a craving for Indian food that night!

We ordered three starters and just shared a main as we were a bit dubious anyway. Starters were not the worse although they did taste like they were from a frozen packet and chucked into a fryer. The main we had was Chicken Tikka Masala which was more like chicken and a tomato gravy. Very thick with very little taste. Everything about our food was very much like microwavable food and this place is not cheap either!

The Australian lady who we think run the place was very nice and friendly, was such a shame the food was terrible. There were so many places to choose from and eat in the Huskisson. We made a terrible choice!
