Very interesting to hear how Holbrook (Germanton) got its name and just how a country town nowhere near the sea, has strong links to submarines. The museun is very engaging and well worth the small entry fee. If you come to Holbrook, you have to have this experience. Lots to see and very professionally done.

So, I have passed the site of the submarine in the middle of Holbrook, NSW several times. This is a great story and worth the $5 entry fee to the museum.

Driving the Hume Highway from Sydney to Albury the Holbrook bypass wasn’t quite finished so we drove through town. Imagine our surprise when we came upon a full size submarine sitting in the middle of a lovely park. Couldn’t resist stopping and clambering all over it.

We didn’t visit the Museum itself but there appears to be a lovely cafe at the park and it’s a great place to stop, revive, survive your long journey.

As an ex Submariner, this is a great museum which shows the history of the submarine service in Australia. The museum contains many articles from previous submarines and has a very detailed mock-up of the Control Room of an Oberon Class Submarine. Outside the museum is a full scale replica of the submarine HMAS Otway which looks amazing sitting in the middle of a park in a NSW country town. Even when the freeway bypass is completed, it is well worth the side trip into Holbrook to visit this museum. The $5 entry fee is a bargain.

The museum next door to the submarine is excellent for all ages. The full scale periscope in the control room is bound to appeal. The holographic display will entertain those who enjoy history and want to know why there's a large submarine in Holbrook. Then there's plenty of equipment, including a torpedo tube, for the technically minded. Coffee and lunch are available at the adjacent, modern café.
