My partner and i booked this hotel on a groupon voucher and we had a really nice time! From the moment we arrived reception was extremely friendly and helpful!
The rooms were average size. Clearly the place is quite old and could probably do with an update but i really don't know why everybody is giving such terrible reviews. The hotel was definitely good value and i would stay again.
It was clean and also we ordered pizza from the restaurant which was really delicious.
I would definitely recommend this hotel to other people. If your expecting a palace maybe you shouldn't be using vouchers!

Just arrived home from a lovely 3 days at the resort. I can't understand what all these whingers are complaining about. Our room was smallish, but adequate. We didn't expect much for the price we paid. The restaurant was superb, the food and service were excellent, not overpriced for a restaurant of this standard.
My husband and I have travelled the world and stayed in 5 star hotels but you are paying around $300 per night. For the money we paid here we consider good value.
Some people just like to complain and pick faults with everything, so I suggest for them to stay at home, but I suppose they would still find something to whinge about. We just go away and enjoy and overlook minor faults. Life is too short not to enjoy. Sandra and Tony.

We stayed here late July 2012, on a Groupon voucher and upgraded to a Hot tub Room ,,Ha,Ha!! The room was anything but romantic and inviting..Very Basic and pokey. We stayed in room 3..(Ground Floor) Room smelt musty as soon as we walked in.Mould on the ceiling in the bedroom. Carpet old and coming away from the joins,Bathroom ( if you could call it a bathroom) very small and pokey ,with a window that opened into some sort of cavity!! so no air ciculation in the bathroom. Paint was peeling off the walls above the tiles in the shower, shower door was supposed to slide and it kept coming off the rail and jamming..towels had long black hairs on them!! (Neither of us have long hair) and the bath towels were fraying..Breakfast is not included (You get $10 off the price)( so read the small print about the deal)We booked a Whale watching cruise ourselves, which we needed to travel to Nelson Bay for, only to discover the ferry service from Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest (which as part of the deal you get 2 for 1 price) only departs twice during the day ( so we were unable to use) and does not coincide with the departure time of the cruise..so we rang the Reception staff at oceanside who advised the skipper of the cruise line would come over and pick us up...(NOT), so we then had to travel over 80k back around to Nelson Bay ...The only saving grace at Oceanside is the restuarant "Benchmark on Booners".(Which is independent of the hotel )The food absolutey sumptious, and reasonably priced, the staff and management very attentive and obliging.

We went on a groupon deal, it was bought in January and the first weekend we could get was July.
We found the room very basic, Carpet filthy.
Shower small and door really tricky to open.
View from window was an air-conditioner and wall, also a vent to the Kitchen.
The Dining there is independent of the hotel and the meals pleasant.
The whole motel could do with grubby finger marks cleaned up.
The bed was quite comfy.
We wouldn't stay there again. Although Isolated if you enjoy walking we found some fabulous walks.

We stayed at the Oceanside in July 2012 after purchasing a 2 night stay via Groupon.com.au.

Firstly, let me say that if the Groupon deal becomes available again, and you aren't fussy about when you want to stay, it is exceptionally good value. If however you have a specific date in mind that you wish to redeem it (such as a wedding anniversary), look elsewhere.

I booked this towards the end of January 2012. Unfortunately I waited a few weeks before contacting the hotel to actually book the 2 nights we wanted to stay there.
Any weekends available?
No chance Sir. Sorry.
First Thursday night + Friday night available?
Towards the end of July Sir.
JULY? Ok, fine. Book us in for July. (remember I'm making this phone call in February!)

Needless to say, their Groupon promotion is *very* popular, and from all accounts the hotel is almost always booked out.

When we arrived, checkin was very friendly and helpful. Through pure serendipity a spa suite cancellation had just been received, so we were allowed to pay an additional $60 for an upgrade to a "Dolphin Unit" suite room, which is on the top floor and contains a king size bed, private verandah and large bathroom with 2 person spa.

The room (room 205 if you're wondering) was immaculately clean, and quite spacious for a motel room. King size bed, private verandah predominantly overlooking the caravan park across the road, 40" lcd TV with DVD player, large bathroom with 2 person spa and separate shower, and all of your usual motel room fare such as bar fridge, iron, kettle and microwave. Because of our upgrade, the advertised chocolates and champagne wasn't waiting for us in our room, but a quick trip to reception rectified this. The champagne and chocolates were cheap and unremarkable, but a nice touch nevertheless. The rooms have free foxtel, but the channels are quite limited to 3 sports channels, discovery channel, MTV and a kids cartoon channel.

There is also DVD hire available downstairs through a computerised vending machine which accepts credit cards. There is a limited selection of old and new release movies available. From Monday to Thursday night, DVD rentals are $2 for 24 hours. For some reason, the price automatically skyrockets on Friday, Saturday and Sunday to $6+ for "new release" dvds on these nights.

We ate dinner at the hotel restaurant (Benchmark on Booner) on the first night of our stay. Groupon includes a $15 drinks voucher with the deal, as an obvious enticement to lure patrons into the restaurant to recoup some of the losses made to the accomodation sold via Groupon. Quality of the meals at the restaurant were excellent, but on the whole the restaurant isn't cheap.

We had entrees and mains for 2 people, and the bill came to just over $130. The oysters were quite small but very good, and the meals were generally cooked very well with the exception of my "medium rare" steak, which came out almost well done. The 2nd time it came out though it was cooked perfectly.

Breakfasts were of a similarly excellent quality. We both had eggs benedict with ham and baby spinach which was fantastic. The coffee on the other hand wasn't great. It was luke warm, like cold milk had been added to the hot coffee.

On the second night we just ordered a pizza from Benchmark to eat in the room. It was a very nice pizza, but expectations were dashed when the large pizza was handed to me in a comically oversized box, only to be revealed as a normal size pizza once I got it back to the room. Still a good pizza though.

Even though the hotel was booked solid for both nights we stayed there, and we were also directly above the exit to the restaurant, it was a very peaceful stay. That was until the 2nd night, through no fault of the hotel, the people in the next room decided to return to their room and have a spa at midnight. They weren't being noisy or doing anything wrong, but their bathroom shared a wall with the head of our bed, and thin walls, old plumbing and a spa bath made it sound like we were trying to sleep with both a blender and whistling kettle running for an hour just behind our pillows. We both gave up on sleep, and got up to watch TV until the neighbours had finished bathing.

The hotel is only a minutes walk from the beach, and provides bikes and surfboards for free hire which I can imagine would be very popular in the warmer months. As others have said, there isn't much to do in Hawks Nest, which will suit some holiday-makers perfectly, and bore others to tears. The heated pool and outdoor spa looked fantastic, and would be great for kids, but we didn't test the waters on this trip.

Included with the room was a buy-one-get-one-free voucher (Adult tickets are $20 return) for the ferry to Nelson Bay. The ferry leaves from Tea Gardens, and stops at Hawks Nest by phone confirmation request, before making the hour long journey to a dock near d'Albora Marina. A very pleasant day was had wandering through the shops at Nelson Bay, and grabbing lunch at one of the many, many restaurants. There is also a cinema within 10 minutes walk of the dock for those wanting to catch a movie while in Nelson Bay.

Overall, for the price we paid for the room, it was a bargain, and all things considered, was a very relaxing stay. I'd recommend purchasing the groupon deal if it becomes available again, but only if you aren't fussy about when you stay there, and don't mind gambling to see if you can secure a room upgrade.

Room Tip: There is a Hot Tub Room upgrade (with a hot tub and queen size bed) or a Spa Room upgrade (with 2 pe...

We stayed here on a groupon deal recently. The resort is quite isolating, you definitely need a car whilst staying here. Beach is across road but if weather is cooler there isn't a lot to do here. The room was quite small and restaurant attached to resort is very expensive for families. Best tip: take the ferry from hawks nest to Nelson bay.

I am writing this review sitting on the bed with the sun streaming through the window, having complimentary champagne and chocolate. Cheap champagne and chocolate but taste ok.

The room has view over the pool, BBQ area and restaurant. it is spacious with room the a lounge/kitchen area. I was worry reading all the bad review but am pleasantly surprised. I paid 229 for 3 nights with We plan to use the ferry voucher as a boat trip. Will report if we are lucky enough to see any dolphin or whale.

May be we are lucky to get a nice room. So can't say much about other rooms. Don't believe in
those horrible reviews. Come and see for yourself. We bought the voucher back in January, tried to book for June but could only get July at the earliest. The weather has been beautiful so far so we are happy. No problem with booking what so ever.

Room Tip: Room 108 is great. Wish we upgrade to a spa room.
