If travelling between Yass and Goulburn we always stop at the Merino Cafe for a snack, rather than the larger town of Goulburn. Gunning, a small picturesque town in country New South Wales, is lucky to have this cafe. Its scheme is rural quaint without being twee, and the food is good. The country lamb is legendary but last time there I had an excellent smoked-salmon salad. One concession which I like is that you help yourself to water (which tasted like Yass water, but maybe the filter needed changing?) in 'plastic' glasses which are eco-friendly. And there is a separate nook for little kids to do their own thing. Overall Merino is clean, airy, and attractively lit, with fresh local and homemade produce on offer.
