Perfect Beach Holiday
January 11, 2018
We had a wonderful stay as a family of 2 kids 2 adults and a dog. Would highly recommend it and will be coming back ! I think it would also be great in the winter, the walking around the area and just relaxing would also be a good option.
The Cottage Itself
Really well laid out with high quality finishings. There were two large bedrooms, the master bedroom is huge with a great outlook onto the lagoon and a great bathroom and walk in wardrobe. The second room has a queen-sized bed and wardrobe again very comfortable. There is also a bunkroom for 4 kids. The linen provided was also very good.
The cottage is perfectly set out for two families of 2 adults and 2 kids, or a larger extended family.
There are 2 lounge rooms with TV’s which means adults and kids can split off with no TV fights. One of the TV’s has Netfix and we used our apple TV in the second room and never had any issues with streaming using the wifi.
There are multiple eating areas, with a large table in the dining area and tables outside in different areas that allowed you to move with weather.
The cross ventilation in the house is great, we only used the AC 3 times in two weeks and were very comfortable.
The kitchen is large and has good quality appliances. Even the knives were reasonably sharp which is very unusual for a rental. We actually cooked a lot these holidays and apart from fish and chips only ate out a handful of times.
The cottage is also Dog friendly and well set up for your pup. There’s a large dog bed and the backyard is fully fenced with plenty of room for dogs to run around.
For the quality, I though the price was fair, we paid peak prices as it was the peak holiday period, but if you are with a second family, or an extended family then I think the value represents a bargain.
The cottage is about a 3 min walk to Werri beach which is a lovely long beach that has a changing face each day depending on the weather, even if you don’t want to swim it’s a lovely place to walk.
The centre of the beach has a large off leash dog area that was wonderful for the dogs and the closest part of the beach to the cottage. This is the most exposed part of the beach and I wouldn’t swim there unless you are an experienced swimmer, lots of changing sand bars, gutters and lots of rips. We are reasonably good in the water so we still did a bit of limited swimming and paddling here.
The south end is where the flags and patrol is, I’d mainly stick to swimming here, especially if you are not confident in the water. There is also a great rock pool there for swimming in and the sea snails will always keep the young members of the household amused.
We swam at the north end and found this a little less exposed and the waves pretty good for body surfing. This is not patrolled so again I wouldn’t swim here unless you are pretty confident.
My only small print complaints about the beach are that it is always quite windy, in 2 weeks we really didn’t have a day without significant wind. This from what I can tell is a feature of the south coast so I don’t think any of the other beaches would be different. Also the 2 weeks we were there the water temp was pretty cold, we admittedly are a bit soft most of our beach holidays have been Fiji and Hawaii, so used to warm water. We just put our wetsuits on and had no problems from there on. Again my kids would be in the water for 1-2 hours, hence I needed to be in there with them so I needed a wetsuit to be in for that long. For a normal swim and not being in for ages its perfectly fine. Also we caught up with some school friends who have a holiday house at Gerroa, he said these two weeks were colder than usual water wise.
To be honest we cooked mainly at home but we checked out the local spots a little bit. The village is about a 20-30 min walk with a steep hill at the end.
Werri Fish and Chips Shop
3 min walk around the corner. This is an old school fish and chip shop and was great we got lunch several times on the way home from the beach. I’m not a fish man but can recommend the Burgers and my very fussy daughter demolished the grilled barramundi on a regular basis. A definite for lunch.
The were two pizza places, Zoobs woodfired pizza and Gerringong pizza. Both were good pizzas Zoobs a little more fancy and crispier base but there was nothing wrong with Gerringong pizza and they home delivered!
Relatively authentic thai. Especially the curries. Reasonable price. Slow service, but I think they were having a particularly busy night and one of the cooks were off.
The food was reasonable and it had a nice outlook over the water. The service was again very slow, which is fine if the place is super busy and they are just a small local outfit, but these guys were charging Sydney prices, so if you want to charge Sydney prices then you need to give Sydney service.
The bowling club by the beach was just what you would expect, burgers and a chicken schnitty all served with a smile. There was an Asian restaurant upstairs, this was straight out of the 1970’s with plenty of number 5 with sweet and sour sauce and spring rolls with pink dipping sauce. Definitely not Mr Wongs or China Doll but on a beach holiday this place hits the mark perfectly.
The Surf Shop
Great shop not cheap but good quality gear, we ended up buying a couple of wetsuits here and they were good quality suits. Even fun just to look around in.
Has everything you will need to self-cater, we did not have a long trip down so brought a lot of stuff with us, but if you were short of packing room don’t bring any consumables just shop here. You weren’t paying resort prices as you do in some places so don’t worrying about having to bring food etc. There was also a bottle shop next door, we brought our own stuff from home as we had heaps of room, but again if room is an issue you’ll get reasonable wine etc here, nothing eclectic but all the usual main stream options.
Note it was 2018 below wouldn't let me choose it
