“Heritage Accommodation in which we enjoyed staying”
Reviewed December 31, 2013

Dorrigo, a pleasant town which is very convenient for the Rainforest Centre, has a very limited choice of accommodation. We were not sure what to expect when we booked a twin en suite room at Dorrigo Hotel Motel. The outside of this property looked somewhat run down, as were the corridors. However, while the furnishings in the rooms were old, everything was in good condition and the en suite shower/WC was modern and efficient. The included continental breakfast was satisfactory.

We opted to have dinner at the Twisted Fork Bistro (in the RSL – about 50 yards away), which had opened a few days before our arrival - very nice. We were told about it at the Canopy Cafe at the Rainforest Centre, which is run by the same people. Meals were also on offer in the motel and in a smart restaurant opposite.

Where to start? This hotel looks like it belongs in the Wild West, dominating the crossroads of an archetypal one horse town (we know, we saw the horse). Faded grandeur probably best describes the place, which is massive and almost certainly a effort to keep going - but good on the family who still run it for trying! There's a 'bistro' restaurant where what can best be described as 'comfort food' is served, as well as (a fairly basic) breakfast. You don't stay here for the luxury, you stay for the experience, and that you get. The rooms are large and very wood orientated and some of the original furniture has been retained as 'features'. There's a tiny TV (located at the far end of the room) and a tacked on bathroom (in most rooms - make sure), but it's fun to imagine yourself back in a different ere and to walk around the balcony that stretches right round the hotel. The staff are friendly and try hard and the bar echoes to horse racing on the large TV, the sound of the 'pokies' in the segregated area and to people enjoying themselves - just not enough, alas.

Despite, or perhaps because of, all the above we enjoyed our stop here, and it is a good place to explore the surrounding rainforest, especially the amazing Dorrigo Rainforest Centre 2km away. Go on ... you know you want to.

Room Tip: Make you you get an ensuite. Go easy in the bistro - the portions are massive.

We stayed in the renovated part of this historic hotel. Our room was spacious and opened onto the wrap around balcony where you could sit and watch the world pass through the crossroads around the war memorial.
We enjoyed reading the pamphlets about the hotel's past. A nice touch. The restoration was tastefully done and the room was comfortable. The staff were down to earth and friendly. There were not many dining choices in Dorrigo but the hotel had quite reasonable meals. Although there were few vegetarian options. Breakfast was included, toast and cereal. A most enjoyable place to stay in a very beautiful area.. The Waterfall Way is a picturesque, though longer, alternative to the coast road from Brisbane to Sydney.

Room Tip: Stay in the heritage section, the old hotel not in the motel section

A group of us recently stayed at the Heritage Dorrigo Hotel while bushwalking in the area - we were all impressed with the quality of service and the accommodation. The hotel has been refurbished and the en-suite rooms upstairs are both spacious and comfortable. We cannot comment on the motel rooms. In particular, the bistro was impressive, offering well above average pub food from an extensive menu.
A continental breakfast is included in the reasonable room tariff.

The Dorrigo Hotel is an ideal base for exploring the area.

Room Tip: Refurbished en-suite rooms on the first floor are very good

Booked to stay for a week was given a pokey 3mx3m room overlooking the car park, noise from pub patrons leaving every night and awoke to a loud banging sound at 5 am each day. The room was freezing the heater was on a timer and made a roaring sound so impossible to leave on all night. Checked out early, really disappointing.

Four of us stayed here on our way back from Queensland , booked two rooms in the motel park of hotel , was a mix up with price quoted on the phone said the cost of rooms was more , I was able to sort that out , we stayed in a older looking room in motel was comfortable but did have a strong musty smell , unfortunately a few drunks from hotel stood outside our door making a lot of noise before getting in there cars and driving off .A friend was staying in the actual hotel they had a lovely room only trouble was the noise of the trucks kept them awake . The food wasn't anything great for breakfast and the there dinner menu not very good . But there is a lovely pasta restaurant just down from the hotel . Dorrigo is a lovely little town and the countryside around there is beautiful .

The rooms were really quite nice done in decor of the day but double beds are a bit past tense
and if you are not fit the stairs to the first floor are quite a climb especially if you have to clime them a few times a day, the poking machine room was filthy, the dining room was fine but expensive but you do get a free continental breakfast for your room fee so for the money it is ok
For cheaper and better food and drink try the RSL club just down the road

Room Tip: I think the spa rooms for size and the Motel if your elderly or not fit
