Warrumbungles Mountain Motel
Reviewed December 22, 2013

If you value style over substance, go elsewhere.... otherwise, read on. This is a great stop for a family with 4 or 5 kids along, or for (like us) a couple of older blokes on a walking tour their wives didn't want to do.

We had a family room with 4 solid bunk beds, a single bed and a double queen size - we just used the bunks for extra luggage. Functionally the bathroom was superior to the much more expensive Canberra motel I recently used. Its internal door and thick shower curtain mean that the toilet, shower and washbasin by different people at the same time in reasonable privacy. The decor is indeed tired, as other reviewers have noted, but it all works, including the small gas top which we used to cook our own dinner and breakfast. (Note: we never tried the TV, so can't vouch for that.)

Outside, the damage to the garden from the January fire is slowly recovering despite that lack of rain. There is a tennis court, football posts, and a 3-hole golf course - none is exactly pro quality, but adequate for batting a ball around. The swimming pool is good, very clean and perfect after a hot summer day. There is quite a lot of bird life around, including King parrots, fairy wrens and the inevitable willie wagtail on the grass.

We found the hosts (didn't get their names) very pleasant to talk to, and helpful when required.

For us, very good value and a pleasant stay.

Room Tip: No particular tips. We were offered a family room as the only choice, so I'm not sure what else...

Thank you for taking the time to review our motel. The fire has had a major effect on us and slowly the gardens are starting to take shape. Lots of birds and wildlife which I am glad you were able to enjoy as well as the pool. I am pleased you found it pleasant and good value.

As others have said the rooms are a bit old and tired. Nonetheless the bed was comfortable and warm and the shower hot with lots of water. If you were travelling with a family you could send the kids outside to play in the vast backyard with confidence they would have fun and be safe. The location makes it very quiet and restful with room to enjoy a late afternoon drink by the Castlereagh river, have a hit of golf or a swim in the pool.

Thank you for posting your review. We understand the rooms are "a bit old and tired", and renovations are next on the list. We have only been here for 18 months and 6 months ago there was a major fire that has set us back in our plans. Glad you enjoyed the comfortable bed and the great hot showers. Also that you appreciated the peaceful location.

I don't want to sound too harsh but my first impression of the motel was that it has been neglected for a long time. Everything inside was old and dated and requires replacement, the same goes for the outdoor facilities. While the cost was low, it's probably more dated than a lot of the hostels and reminded me of my high school music camp.

The location was great though, close to town and the national park. It's one of those motels that could have been so much better.

The rooms, as others have mentioned, are a bit tired and the TV is a middle condition antique, but if you are here in Coonabarabran either for bushwalking or for the dark skies, this is a great place to stay.

Its a few minutes drive to town, probably best before dark because of the roos, should you decide to eat there, but the cabins have cooking facilities and there is a Woolies in town.

Bring your telescope and eyepieces, set up just 20 metres or so from your room and observe or image with the convenience of being only a minute away from your bed after a long night's observing session.

If Conna were not so far from Sydney I'd be here every month at new moon.

This place is perfect if you are visiting the Warrumbungles and you don't want to camp. It is on a VERY quiet acreage about 8km from Coonabarabran on the road towards the Bungles, with a river at the back. Very peaceful and relaxing, and infinitely better than in town where all the giant trucks thunder past. Our room was very spacious and could sleep seven people (four in bunks), and also had full cooking facilities, so it would be very suitable for families or groups. The furniture etc was a bit old and scraped, but quite acceptable for the price, and the carpet was good.

Our bushwalking club (18 of us) stayed here in September and we were very pleased with the location of the motel, the peaceful and pretty environment and the friendly hosts. The rooms are a bit tired and are in need of some renovation, but they are very spacious with an equipped kitchen and a bathroom. We liked the "back door" access from our rooms to the grounds and the bbq area where we could have our communal meetings and happy hour. It's a very convenient place to stay when planning on walks in the Warrumbungles National Park, and is also across the road from an excellent evening observatory show.

We were intending to spend a day discovering the Warrumbungles and the observatory so booked this motel because it was the closest. We ended up staying 4 nights because of the very pleasant environment. There were so many opportunities to spend an hour or two relaxing and enjoying the surroundings that we stayed longer than planned. Our hosts were so helpful and friendly providing whatever we needed for a game of golf and tennis. Our discovery of the river was an unexpected surprise. I would recommend this motel for an overnight or entended stay.

Room Tip: All have rear door access to BBQs, extensive parklands and gardens.
