Planula B&B Retreat
Ranked #16 of 34 Byron Bay B&B and Inns
Reviewed January 7, 2014

My husband and I spent 6 glorious nights at Planula B and B Retreat in Byron bay over the new year. I found this place through the internet and booked online. I was so impressed by the charm of the rainforest retreat and the graciousness of our hosts Wendy and Tim . Our room was very comfortable. I loved the room fan because it was very humid in Byron (.I prefer a fan to air conditioning ...it is much healthier)
The frogs, lizards and beautiful birdlife in Planula made our stay feel like we were deep in tropical forests yet we were just 3 km away from the buzz of Byron Bay. I also loved reading and dozing in the hammock on the wooden deck. We had access to the kitchen and lounge room at all times and so it felt very homely. Our hosts were mindful of our privacy but were also available for a chat and gave us good advice about local happenings . Breakfast was served in a continental way . Wendy is a wonderful baker and each morning we were greeted with freshly home baked bread, muffins and fruit platters.(the raspberry and white chocolate muffins were amazing ) I would highly recommend Planula for a relaxing and rejuvenating getaway. We will certainly return

Room Tip: our ground floor room was large enough for my 18 year old daughter to stay one night after camping...

A stay at the Planula retreat is a great place to relax and unwind. Tim and Wandy are fantastic hosts and always happy to assist. The place is set in a rainforest and is full of wildlife. It is 3km from main town, which was not a problem for us as we had bikes to commute back and forth.
If you are after a nice, quiet place to relax and enjoy what nature has to offer, this is the place for you. I am happy to recommend.

One other review summed it up !! ..,.if you like camping , you will love your stay here .
If however you are expecting a 4star hotel service you will be very disappointed as we were .
Our room was very basic, the bathroom was full of bugs on arrival (I guess the down side to staying in the rain forest ) however after a quick trip to the local super market for bug spray ....all was good again ........until I found I was sharing my shower with a large spider !!
Not to mention the large lizard on the deck and the tree frog (we were in the rain forest that said ) If being in touch with the wild life is not for you , this place is definately not for you .
If you are into self catering and sharing your space with other guests and taking in a bit of nature on route then Planula is for you ....if you prefer 4 star to be 4 star with crisp clean sheets on your bed every day , soft fluffy towels and your room cleaned daily then try somewhere else !
Judging by some other reviews , there are folk out there who love what Planula has to offer,
We however like a hotel with everything available so Planula was not for us
That said there was something unique about listening to the strange noices of the rain forest at 3am

Room Tip: Only two rooms out of the five that are not accessed via the guest sitting room and kitchen

Dear Melissa,

Thanks for taking the time to write a review and we are very sad to hear that our motto 'Surrounded by Nature' did not seem to resonate with you.

We are very proud of our green tree frogs and water dragons as you can see from our own website and our facebook page. Planula is situated on over 50 acres of bushland, most of which we devoted to the wildlife (see the 'Land for Wildlife' logo on our website).

We believe we offer the best of both worlds by being far removed from the 'madness' of inner Byron Bay on a tranquil property surrounded by nature, but within only 3 kilometres of town which is unique in Byron Bay.

From your other review about Byron Bay in general, I can read that you didn't really enjoy our town and that might have contributed to your disappointment.

We do not advertise ourselves as a 4-star hotel but as a unique retreat in Byron Bay, where people come to relax and enjoy the fact they are surrounded by nature.

As for your bathroom which was 'full of bugs', we would have of course happily removed any bugs and we are always available at reception. Our towels are fluffy, our linen is clean and line dried where possible and our rooms are serviced every second day.

We wish you all the best in your future travels.

My stay at Planula was very satisfactory. My room was quiet with a comfortable bed and pillow and open to lots of fresh air thru fly screens. I loved the setting which was rainforest all around so that it felt like I was staying in the middle of the bush even tho it was only a short drive into Byron and not far from Bangalow. The hosts were sensitive to one's privacy but most supportive at the same time. I would certainly recommend.

A wonderfully restful and relaxing retreat. Planula's hosts are so welcoming and helpful. Well located away from main road noise but still with easy access to Byron Bay highlights. Happy to highly recommend

I would highly recommend this place if you are going to Byron. It is a short 2k journey from the centre of Byron Bay. If you are lazy like we were and without car, the taxi service is super efficient and extremely reliable. Or weather permitting, it is a lovely walk into Byron along the cycle track. The place itself is really relaxing and worth every penny. We had the upstairs balcony room, which was great for some drinks in the evening. There is hardly any external noise at all which adds to the great ambience and adds to the great napping to be had! The staff are extremely friendly and cant do enough for you. the place is very clean and very homely.
Would highly recommend this place.

The B&B located not far Byron bay village (about 3,5 KM), in quite and gorgeous garden with some tropical plants. Room are spatious, the furnitures are ordinary but confortable. We were not satisfied by little bathroom. Furthermore the breakfast was modest.
The B&B has free wireless and in addition the owners are very kind and attentive, and both these aspects to be considered during a long vacation in Australia.

Room Tip: In August the temperature in the nigh is about 20 C° or less, so if you arrive in the late afternoon...

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are always happy to improve our game and take your comments to heart.

Our standard ensuites with shower and toilet are not huge, but for people wanting a large bathroom we would recommend our spa room which has a spacious ensuite with a large, double spa and separate shower (and toilet).

Most of our guests are very happy with our continental breakfast as we use quality products and there is fresh fruit and some home-baked goodies included such as bread, muffins or a nutty banana bread.

For a cooked breakfast we can recommend some excellent cafes in town or you can opt to cook your own in our guest kitchen.

Happy travels!
