“Great Location, Great Staff But Needs Maintenance”
Reviewed January 11, 2012

Stayed here for 6 nights, the staff were fantastic, welcoming and helpful! The room we stayed in on the first night was located on the ground floor and was spacious enough. However, my wife discovered a large number of cockroaches in the bathroom ranging from tiny to enormous. We had in the mean time upgraded to the penthouse at our own cost. The penthouse was spacious and had a view of the beach from the balcony but the bathroom was dark and the washing machine and tumble dryer needed to be replaced The whole hotel is badly in need of maintenance and upgrading. Given its proximity to the beach and the degradation that can be caused by salt water, some issues can be expected but the maintenance issues are massive, Windows that are difficult to open and close, rusty air conditioners and the list could continue. If you are staying bring some preventative bug spray.

Thank you for your review and for your compliments about our staff. At Waves, we work very hard to ensure that our customer service is excellent.
We are sorry that you found cockroaches in your bathroom. Unfortunately, in a sub tropical climate, they occasionally can be found. We regularly spray all of our rooms to stop this happening. We are delighted that you found the penthouse spacious and that you enjoyed those wonderful views of the beach. Proximity to the beach and salt water can cause degradation and we have a maintenance team who work tirelessly to ensure that this is kept to a minimum and every guest enjoys their stay with us.

Low-key hotel with simple frontage. Sand and blue colour tones in comfortable lobby. Easy below street parking next to hotel. 1 minute walk to the beach - best beach ever with fine sand that actually squeaks when you walk on it! Super-friendly people. Dive shop (Sundive) 2 minutes from hotel - easy rentals, good prices, drive to beach, launch boat, 10 minutes to Julian Rocks for some F.A.B. diving (Mantas, turtles, grey nurse shark). Recommend you make this part of your stay. Funky boutiques with surf wear and Island Exotic most amazing fashion store in town. Best restaurant "The Balcony" - be seen on it and not from it!! Good prices. Cheap lunch is falafel cafe nearby - AUS$12 for full pitta with falafel and home-made lemonade. Hotel gives you beach towels (clean every day) and boogie boards for the surf! Great breakfasts (included) of fresh fruit-filled muffins, Nespresso coffee (YAY!!), orange juice with apples available all day, plus daily newspapers. Cost only $210 per night - best value in NSW. Didn't both to drive 2 hours to visit Brisbane. It was all here. Room spacious and comfy too! Cleaned every day with fresh bath products supplied. What more could you ask. "Too easy" mate.

Room Tip: Get a room with a balcony so you can hang swimsuits out to dry!

This hotel is in a fantastic location. We had a ground floor room which was so convenient to drop in and out of on the way too and from the beach. Coffee and Muffins were yum, room was comfy, clean and had a very large bathroom. I would stay here again for a easy, relaxed weekend escape.

Byron as a town is a great location but what made it even better was the stay at the Waves hotel, we were a honeymoon couple and I have never been treated so well as at the Waves, the staff are all lovely and friendly and really make you feel at home. The location of the hotel is perfect, right next to the beach whilst still close to the town.

I booked the penthouse at this hotel for an anniversay weekend thinking 'penthouse' would mean, a superior room. On the website, it states the hotel has 'luxurious rooftop penthouses'. Far from it. The room was dated, tired and basically needed an overhaul. The view from the 'penthouse' balcony was a busy car round-a-bout. Not exactly romantic. The picture on the website shows the hotels foyer, which is nice and has has been refurbished. This look does not follow throught to the rooms though. The bathrooms were very average.. Saying this the rooms where spacious enough and the proximity to the beach was good. A very basic room. Dissapointing. I have to say, I won't be returning to Waves.
