“40th in Style”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 12, 2013

Based on TA reviews 6 of us went for dinner to celebrate my 40th. Effusive welcome on arrival from Chauby, including my name up in lights on the blackboard. Although not extensive the menu was informative and provided ample choice for all. The waiter was knowledgable and personable.

We shared the scallops, snails and pate for starters, and it was more than enough for the 6 of us. Considering that only one of us was an esgargot lover, a brief but intense battle was fought to secure the tender and garlicky omnipods, they were divine. Also the duck liver pate, to die for.

Chosen mains were steaks, cooked blue, rare, and medium rare, duck legs, and the mussels. The blue cheese sauce chosen by three of us was, in all honesty, to die for, and I don't even like blue cheese! The mussels were plentiful and tasty, the duck the best my father said he had ever eaten, and he is a pom.

Accompanying the mains were mashed potatoes and a cauliflower cheese. I think Igor (the Chef and owner) must have found a little piece of heaven and slipped it into the potatoes, put it this way one of our party said she would drive from the Gold Coast and just feast on this.

The desserts. Just order the creme brulee. Seriously, if you regret it, I wlll eat my chapeau. If you haven't embibed quite enough alcohol try the crepe suzettes.

Drinks, we thoroughly enjoyed a French sauv blanc, and Bordeaux, along with champagne.

What made this restaurant special was superb food, good wine, and personable hosts who took the time to make our evening an experience, rather than just eats on the way to something else. Our evening was better by far than anything that the Gold Coast (home to half of us) has to offer.

Oh, by the way, did I mention the personal rendition of joyeux anniversaire from Chauby and Igor? And Edith Piaff on request. Priceless!

“Fabulous French fare”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2013

4 of us went excitely to Petit Snail for a dinner treat and were expecting great things based on TA reviews and we were not disappointed (which says a lot for the food assessed against great expectations). 3 of us tried snails for the first time and they were very good. Butter and garlic soaked with an earthy flavour. For mains we tried the steak in red wine (magnifique), the mussels (superb), the duck (melt in your mouth - order 2 legs), the crepe gruyere avec oeuf (very tasty). All 4 of us rated our meals very well (see quotes in brackets). We eat out in Sydney a lot and this is top class food. My wife wants to return for the steak tartare with raw egg. Chauby and Igor are very friendly and welcoming and have some well honed hospitality skills. As they say on their website - 'all of what you like about French restaurants without what you don't like' :-)
Well done and don't change
Thanks and we will be back

“le meilleur de Byron Bay, la nouvelle norme!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2013

This is by far the best restaurant in Byron Bay. We visited during a week long honeymoon in December, and I feel to an extent, qualified to make that statement given the fact that we ate every meal out sparing no expense. Service, ambiance, food, and joie de vivre is all spot on at The Petit Snail. The owners were sincerely intent on us enjoying not only the food but a few hours in their restaurant, which we certainly did. This is a must visit if staying in Byron Bay and looking for a top spot for dinner. It was so nice to be in a restaurant (in Byron Bay) with genuine personality.

“Simply brilliant.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2013

For starters - definitely make a reservation. We had no wait a few nights but it was absolutely worth the wait.
Between two of us for entree we had the escargot, scallops and prawns and each were exceptional. Mains were beef Roquefort and the cheese crepe accompanied with a great French sav blanc.
We shared a creme brûlée and ended up having to order another as it was that good.
The atmosphere is great and our waitress, chef and hostess were on their game. Will definitely go back if we're ever in Byron again.

“Best Restaurant in The Universe!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2013

I just returned to this Restaurant for the second time and once again I was knocked off my feet by the delicious food and outstanding service! Great value for money and a really authentic French meal experience. It's also rather quaint. Worth checking out! Best to book (of course)!
