Based on TA reviews 6 of us went for dinner to celebrate my 40th. Effusive welcome on arrival from Chauby, including my name up in lights on the blackboard. Although not extensive the menu was informative and provided ample choice for all. The waiter was knowledgable and personable.
We shared the scallops, snails and pate for starters, and it was more than enough for the 6 of us. Considering that only one of us was an esgargot lover, a brief but intense battle was fought to secure the tender and garlicky omnipods, they were divine. Also the duck liver pate, to die for.
Chosen mains were steaks, cooked blue, rare, and medium rare, duck legs, and the mussels. The blue cheese sauce chosen by three of us was, in all honesty, to die for, and I don't even like blue cheese! The mussels were plentiful and tasty, the duck the best my father said he had ever eaten, and he is a pom.
Accompanying the mains were mashed potatoes and a cauliflower cheese. I think Igor (the Chef and owner) must have found a little piece of heaven and slipped it into the potatoes, put it this way one of our party said she would drive from the Gold Coast and just feast on this.
The desserts. Just order the creme brulee. Seriously, if you regret it, I wlll eat my chapeau. If you haven't embibed quite enough alcohol try the crepe suzettes.
Drinks, we thoroughly enjoyed a French sauv blanc, and Bordeaux, along with champagne.
What made this restaurant special was superb food, good wine, and personable hosts who took the time to make our evening an experience, rather than just eats on the way to something else. Our evening was better by far than anything that the Gold Coast (home to half of us) has to offer.
Oh, by the way, did I mention the personal rendition of joyeux anniversaire from Chauby and Igor? And Edith Piaff on request. Priceless!
