Was really looking forward to this....unfortunately left feeling disappointed and a bit ripped off!
Did the wildlife tour, which GUARANTEES sightings of kangaroos, koala, flying foxes and wallabies, with a locally sourced picnic lunch.
Picked up and a long drive to the koala care centre at lismore, where we found 4 koalas in trees right at the centre in an urban area. Easily accessible on your own.
Then a stop for flying foxes for 5 minutes, before going to a public picnic site for lunch. The local picnic lunch probably cost $20 for the 3 of us-chicken, some bread and salad, before a walk in the 'rainforest' which was a 10/15 minute boardwalk section, again easily reached alone.
We then drove on to find some kangaroos. Saw 4 from the side of the road before going back to byron. No wallabies as promised in the literature
Overall disappointing really as I was left with a sense of extremely poor value for money at $100 each!!!!
Miss

Gilbertra84, I'm sorry you were disappointed with your Wildlife Tour. We do go and see native animals in their natural habitat, and under those circumstances sometimes we see a lot and some times not as much - that's nature.

Seeing 4 koalas on one walk is actually quite good, under normal circumstances you would only see one koala every kilometre or so, which makes going to look for them in the forest pretty challenging and often disappointing. In this area (as in most of Australia), koala habitat is in severe decline, so the University has planted koala food trees (which the wild koalas from the area have moved in to) and created a lovely wildlife walk, on which we would have seen at least 12 species of bird and probably some water dragons, that's 14 species of wildlife on a one hour walk!

We only stop at the flying foxes for about 5-10 minutes becasue we don't like to disturb them. If they start flying around, they can urinate on people below which can be dangerous as they carry diseases.

I'm sorry you were disappointed with the lunch, chicken with salad is a typical Aussie picnic lunch and most people say they really enjoy it. But I can assure you it does cost more that $20 in total.

I'm sorry that we only saw 4 kangaroos, we usually see more and the wallabies. But if you felt aggrieved for not seeing the wallabies, you should have mentioned it on the tour, there was another place we could have gone to see wallabies.

All the places we go are easily accessible by the public, so of course you could have gone all those places yourself, but without a local guide you would not have known where to go or what to look for, that's what you were paying for.

The hinterland tour was a really unique experience of exploring the volcanic valley inland from Byron, surrounding picturesque mountains and characteristic townships scattered throughout the most beautiful scenery. A generous guide makes the whole trip!

We did Wendy's day time tour. Her passion for the local wildlife and indigenous knowledge can't be overstated. We saw so much flora and fauna - koalas, kangaroos, pademelons, wallabies, lizards, dozens of bird species. She's fun and funny and really knows her topic. The fee is well worth it.
