“Not just dinner - an experience”
Reviewed February 21, 2013 via mobile

I was really excited when we walked into St Elmos, but then they walked us straight through the fun and lively restaurant to seat us out the back in what looks like an empty apartment terrace. Before ordering we moved inside to sit at the bar and this definitely changed the course of the evening. The atmosphere was electric.
It was actually quite entertaining to watch the bar staff at work and they were super friendly and helped us pick the best tapas on the menu. As the food came out the staff would ask us how each one was, as if anyone might think they were less than delicious. As I am not much of a drinker the bar staff also kindly created a couple of different mocktails throughout the evening for me.
The star of the evening was definitely the chocolate cappuccino dessert. Words cannot describe the bliss! A definite on the menu when dining here.

“Good tapas with bar atmosphere”
Reviewed February 19, 2013

Ons rainy night in Byron we decided to head to St Elmos. The cocktails and beers were delicious. We ordered the empanadas special and were impressed. The time between the tapas was a little bit too long (about 7-15 minutes). We also ordered the beef cheek which was very rich and lamb shoulder. The came out togetherness we're both delicious but very rich. I would recommend having a light salad with them as they were a bit too much to stomach. We weren't offered dessert, which wasn't really an issue because there wasn't much on the menu. The service was fantastic, helpful and friendly. I would visit again.

“Not so great”
Reviewed February 16, 2013 via mobile

We live locally and have eaten here regularly for quite some time. We often recommend it and always take friends who visit. But our recent experience was a let down. This is a bar, not a restaurant, and if crowded and noisy is what you are looking for you won't be disappointed. The music was unbearable, making any sort of conversation impossible. We couldn't even communicate with the waitress who took our order, so it's not as if they are unaware of the noise. It's clearly a case of the staff playing what suits them - a kind of techno-dub - and tough luck on the diners. Usually the food is excellent but this time we found some dishes overcooked and disappointing. Even the evening's specials - which ought to be special - weren't up to it. Clearly, the kitchen doesn't cope we'll when it gets busy. It's sad to lose a favourite eatery, but we will be moving on.

“Good upmarket tapas in Byron Bay”
Reviewed February 8, 2013

St Elmo is good, and the menu is interesting/unusual, but it is quite expensive, particularly the wine list. I particularly enjoyed the croquettas and flat breads, and my husband liked the beef cheeks which we were told are a signature dish. It was full and lively on a mid week night so a good atmosphere. .

Sharing a meal and a bottle of wine at St Elmo, we noticed how easily the venue could fit into any trendy suburb of Sydney or Melbourne. The menu is tapas and is quite extensive with dishes such as Pata Negra Jamon (aged 36 months) which doesn't always feature in tapas restaurants (to my husband's dismay). The soft shell crab sliders were delicious as were the arancini balls. The wine list was great and the service attentive (without being overbearing).
