My broadcast tv crew has been staying at the Bay Motel, overlooking Byron Bay's main beach pretty much two to four times a year since 1995 when, back in the day, it was the Bay Mist Motel. It has had a number of different managers, but this time, just last week, was the first time I needed a room with wheelchair access. Officially there is no disabled facility at this property (not great) but the new managers, Sarah and her husband Rod, bent over backwards to accommodate me on a night when no=one should have been out and about they re-organised rooms and provided all assistance needed to ensure I had wheelchair access and was completely comfortable on what was a one-night stopover.
That was a great introduction to an old friend under new management. So what Bay Motel? It is as close to the ocean as anywhere in Byron apart from the main Beach Hotel (a mandatory stop once settled in to the room) and is happily next door. If completely ambulatory it is the perfect starting point for a beach walk to "The Pass" and back for a morning walk prior to getting back on the road or getting on with a holiday. It is within tripping distance of some of the best food in the Bay with a laneway at the rear and the pub next door and a fish restaurant and cafe at the beach car...My broadcast tv crew has been staying at the Bay Motel, overlooking Byron Bay's main beach pretty much two to four times a year since 1995 when, back in the day, it was the Bay Mist Motel. I cannot think of a better motel in any beach-side destination in the world. We can/could secure our vehicles full of digital video and streaming equipment in the secure parking. Take a walk on the beach, a swim, a cold beer, a brilliant breakfast lunch or dinner, all within the literal five minutes stroll. Beds are comfortable, rooms are well-equipped, everything is sparkly clean, managers are truly hospitable, TV has as many channels as anyone could want and everything is close at hand and nothing is wasted. If you want the Four Seasons or simialr resort with everything under the one roof - don't bother. If you want to feel as though you are actually living in Byron and part of the place you will find nowhere better that The Bay Motel.More
