“Over priced especially cake and coffee”
Reviewed October 13, 2012

Good location however and a nice alternative especially in the winter months. Coffee by the fire, always a nice alternative.

“We come back year after year!”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

We have been enjoying Briars for more than twenty years and it never changes - or just gets better! It really pays to book ahead! The food is great - as is the value! The salad bar is the best ever - and the vegetables - the whole deal is well worth the drive from Sydney for us. We love the way they organise ordering - just love to get there early and watch everyone have a good time.

“Over Priced and Disappointing”
Reviewed July 5, 2012

Food was simple and completely overpriced for what we got. We ordered their specials: Smoked Cod with curry rice. The cod looked like it had just been from a woolworths packet and it had bones, over priced at $29 a serve. The raw meat/steak portions for self cooking looked small. The fresh damper bread was completely tasteless. The salad bar was disgusting. At 7.30pm it was more than half empty and did not get refilled. The salads were basic, green leaves, coleslaw, etc and did not look at all appetizing. The hot food bar only had potato bake. I had to ask for it to be refilled as it was empty. Then it just was very ordinary. We had better tasting and value for meals in centre of Bowral. We used trip advisor to go here and were completely disappointed and thus was compelled to write and let others know. Whilst the big outdoor firepit does add some ambiance, it was pretty cold and no one was outside. It doesn't make up for the over priced meal. I would not return here.

“Beautiful old pub”
Reviewed July 5, 2012

A gorgeous old pub that is great for all ages. It is intimate inside with a lovely restaurant, and has a fantastic beer garden .. with great heating in winter. The menu is extensive and food is brilliant. A good point for us was the baby change table in the ladies.

“Disappointing experience.”
Reviewed July 4, 2012

We have visited the Briars over the years many times and whilst not excelling in imagination when it comes to the food on offer we have always enjoyed ourselves.
Unfortunately recently the place has lost its appeal because prices are creeping up and choices are restricted.Plenty of simple food is on offer and if you want a roast or fish and chips then it's still quite good value when a "shopper docket" offers a 2-4-1 deal. However the choice is limited and other meals including steaks and the Xmas in July offering is at full price. Expect to pay $45 for two courses for the Xmas in July.
Where things can get expensive is the choice of drinks where wine and beer are at premium prices.
Having said this the Briars still draws a crowd of locals and visitors to Bowral.
The staff work hard ,but it is not a relaxing experience as food has to be ordered at a counter where the queue can be long. The mains are delivered to the table, but the help yourself to vegies and salad bar are a disappointment.
The early eaters have the best chance of getting a reasonable offering from the self serve bar, but late eaters will be left with a messy array of food.In this day and age I am surprised health and safety accept this type of food offering!
Three of us chose fish and chips but were disappointed as the fish was spoiled by being very greasy and the chips were much the same. The other diner had calamari but said it was also disappointing because it was tasteless. Most of the food was left untouched except for a few mouthfuls. When the table was cleared away after some 15 minutes no one asked if there was a problem with the food, even though so much was left uneaten.
I still believe the Briars is a nice place for a drink as it does have an outdoor seating area and a cosy bar for colder days. However it is about time the Briars had a make over and offered a more modern setting in its restaurant. The bars are OK.
I want the Briars to continue to do well and offer these comments merely to help the Briars improve.
