Our visit to this restaurant was not what we expected from the Regional Restaurant of the Year.

Our first disappointment was the menu on two counts - firstly the menu was tatty and grubby. Secondly, we were given a choice of a 7 course or a 5 course or a 3 course menu with no real indication of what was on offer. For example one item read "charred beetroot - vegetable peeling - yoghurt - oxalis". All the other item has 4 word descriptions. So we asked the waitress for her help. She didn't know which veggie had been peeled and advised that oxalis was a kind of weed. She advised that the meal sizes were somewhere between entrée and main size, but I've never had an entrée so small before. I was going to have the smoked kingfish (which was very good), but chose the beef after she told me it was the best on the menu. What a mistake, there was something served with the beef that was chewy and barely edible. The pork belly was excellent.

The service certainly lets the place down. Our first course arrived immediately after the bread rolls. Then we waited almost an hour for the second course.

Desert was a nightmare. We chose the two sorbet dishes. The one with rose petals raved about in the Good Food Guide was passable, but the one in pumpkin was awful.

We couldn't wait to leave.

Why didn't we eat at the Links House Hotel?

A group of eleven friends chose a Bowral for their annual get together. The group stayed at Links House which included an immaculate three course dinner. We enjoyed an excellent lunch at the Olbury southern highlands vineyard. Having noted the two hats awarded the Biota restaurant, though wary, decided to dine at Biota on our final evening. We chose two courses. The menu was uninviting and difficult to interpret . The majority ordered an entree of cuttlefich in a risotto. This was largely inedible, the cuttlefish too tough to chew and the black ink risotto far too heavily salted. a small half cooked egg completed the nonsense. Two plates went back untouched. Others who thought they had ordered lamb shank found a strange combination of film flam including tiny pieces of (seemingly) deconstructed lamb. Dessert consisted of three portions of banana a spoon full of cream and an unpleasant unidentifiable taste in the bottom of the dish. The unanimous decision was worst meal ever.

I have now been to Biota twice, with eleven months in between. Both times, I thought the food was great - very imaginative and tasty. However, unfortunately both times, the service left us wanting. You would expect from a two hatted restaurant and regional restaurant of the 2013 that this would be better. I don't expect such formal service, but they were either run off their feet or seemed quite inexperienced. One staff member refilled 2 out of the 5 of our wine glasses with the remaining wine before asking whether we would like another bottle, leaving the other 3 with no wine and without realising that we had already ordered a different wine to move on to. One of our courses took more than 30 minutes to arrive, which I know is not the waiters' fault and is more a kitchen issue. While I do not expect or want this place to be a formal experience by any means, there seems to be a little more refinement of service and kitchen timing needed.

We've made two trips from Sydney just to eat here - it really is that good.

The restaurant is beautifully minimalist with a distinct Scandinavian aesthetic. Decoration extends to bare tree branches but the room itself is beautiful without any decoration. Money has obviously not been spared on the fit out.

When I first read the menu it didn't inspire me. In fact, it still doesn't but don't let that fool you. The food is imaginative but delicious, with sublime taste and texture combinations.

The service is good without being over the top. A nice touch is the chef working the pass using a hand clap to call for service rather than a bell.
If this place was in Sydney it would have 3 hats and be packed out every day, but it is even better for being in laid back Bowral with the great local produce.

It is first time that I have driven 120km just for lunch but it was worth it.

An interesting decor and quite appropriate.A menu printed on oridinary white A4 paper...rather difficult to follow but a lovely waitress patiently explained every dish.We have opted for a 3 dish menu and it was more then enough for lunch. A loveley glass of white to follow.
Beautiful presentation, mixture of textures and flavours.
Only one complaint....loud music. Found it difficult to hear my companion.
