Our visit to this restaurant was not what we expected from the Regional Restaurant of the Year.
Our first disappointment was the menu on two counts - firstly the menu was tatty and grubby. Secondly, we were given a choice of a 7 course or a 5 course or a 3 course menu with no real indication of what was on offer. For example one item read "charred beetroot - vegetable peeling - yoghurt - oxalis". All the other item has 4 word descriptions. So we asked the waitress for her help. She didn't know which veggie had been peeled and advised that oxalis was a kind of weed. She advised that the meal sizes were somewhere between entrée and main size, but I've never had an entrée so small before. I was going to have the smoked kingfish (which was very good), but chose the beef after she told me it was the best on the menu. What a mistake, there was something served with the beef that was chewy and barely edible. The pork belly was excellent.
The service certainly lets the place down. Our first course arrived immediately after the bread rolls. Then we waited almost an hour for the second course.
Desert was a nightmare. We chose the two sorbet dishes. The one with rose petals raved about in the Good Food Guide was passable, but the one in pumpkin was awful.
We couldn't wait to leave.
Why didn't we eat at the Links House Hotel?
