Being used to overpriced hotels in the Southern Highlands we were pleasantly surprised by the Gibraltar. As we only wanted to stay in town on the Saturday night, our choices were limited by the fact that many hotels in the area had a two night minimum booking on weekends. The Gibraltar offered a reasonable Saturday night tariff (including a full buffet breakfast) so we decided to give it a go.
The hotel has been fully renovated and lots of care and attention has gone into this renovation. I found the public areas a bit dark and I wasn't sure the clubby feel really suited the Southern Highlands surrounds but that's just a personal preference thing rather than a true criticism. The hallways had a smell of cleaning products and I wondered if there was a damp issue happening there.
Our room was spacious and well appointed and was very clean. The view over the golf course was gorgeous. The bathroom was really well appointed as well. Unfortunately our room did have a strong smell of stagnant water in the bathroom. After we opened up the windows and cranked up the aircon it seemed to get better. I think it is a function of this being quite an old hotel - the refurb can't fix all aspects of it.
We had a room service lunch which was delivered promptly and the food was fresh and had lots of flavour. It was also quite good value as far as hotel room service prices tend to go. The breakfast buffet offered lots of variety across both cold and hot options. It was crowded and noisy when we arrived (a big wedding party was at the hotel the night we were there).
The service at reception was not great. Simple questions (like does my rate include breakfast) seemed to create great confusion and staff weren't able to manage more than one thing at a time which meant lengthy delays and a bit of frustration for people who were waiting. Service at breakfast was seamless and room service attendants were efficient.
Overall this was a nice hotel compared to many others in the area.
