Being used to overpriced hotels in the Southern Highlands we were pleasantly surprised by the Gibraltar. As we only wanted to stay in town on the Saturday night, our choices were limited by the fact that many hotels in the area had a two night minimum booking on weekends. The Gibraltar offered a reasonable Saturday night tariff (including a full buffet breakfast) so we decided to give it a go.

The hotel has been fully renovated and lots of care and attention has gone into this renovation. I found the public areas a bit dark and I wasn't sure the clubby feel really suited the Southern Highlands surrounds but that's just a personal preference thing rather than a true criticism. The hallways had a smell of cleaning products and I wondered if there was a damp issue happening there.

Our room was spacious and well appointed and was very clean. The view over the golf course was gorgeous. The bathroom was really well appointed as well. Unfortunately our room did have a strong smell of stagnant water in the bathroom. After we opened up the windows and cranked up the aircon it seemed to get better. I think it is a function of this being quite an old hotel - the refurb can't fix all aspects of it.

We had a room service lunch which was delivered promptly and the food was fresh and had lots of flavour. It was also quite good value as far as hotel room service prices tend to go. The breakfast buffet offered lots of variety across both cold and hot options. It was crowded and noisy when we arrived (a big wedding party was at the hotel the night we were there).

The service at reception was not great. Simple questions (like does my rate include breakfast) seemed to create great confusion and staff weren't able to manage more than one thing at a time which meant lengthy delays and a bit of frustration for people who were waiting. Service at breakfast was seamless and room service attendants were efficient.

Overall this was a nice hotel compared to many others in the area.

Room Tip: Make sure you request a King Bed if you don't want two doubles in your room.

Attended a wedding here recently and also stayed at the accommodation. Beautiful, quiet, clean, staff helpful .. very relaxing. The rooms are huge. All rooms seem to have two king single beds pushed together giving one enormous king bed. Bathrooms are massive with double shower heads (hand held and dinner plate size shower head on ceiling .. loved the latter). So much variety for breakfast .. fantastic. Harvey's Bar great little venue. Some rooms look out over the golf course which is very peaceful. Ample parking for guests.
The only slight negative was lighting .. both in the rooms and corridors. My room had three lamps and some down lights but not enough light for my liking. During the day the corridor lighting was very minimal, personally I think they could do with more.
But all in all I thoroughly enjoyed my two night stay.
Would recommend to golfers and for the golfing widow, well you can pamper yourself at the day spa followed by a champas or two at Harvey's Bar. I didn't try the spa but it looks good online.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with balcony looking out over the golf course.

We stayed one night at this hotel expecting a five star experience. Instead it was a 2 star experience. The rooms were dark, no reading lights, just two lamps and a light that didn't work where you made a cuppa. Even the hallways were so dim you couldn't see a lovely etched design in the carpet (only when you passed a glass door to the outside). The hallways smelt slightly damp as well. Our room also had a smell of smoke. We weren't asked if we wanted a non-smoking or smoking - don't even know if they do differentiate.
The bathroom was spacious and well-fitted out - at least this had some decent light.

We paid top dollar for a spa package which included breakfast and free Wi Fi - (a bonus? - should be free anyway). Our room over looked the car park and was also quite noisy as we were near a stairwell. The rooms weren't properly soundproof.

The only saving grace was the spa treatment - professional and experienced therapists. Though there was no clear entrance nor check-in area, just a lounge hidden around a corner with no-one to acknowledge your arrival, which took over 15 minutes for someone to appear.

Breakfast had a good choice of food. Atmosphere was lacking - just another big function room overlooking the golf course. There was no mention of a restaurant on the website, just food available at the bar. We entered the bar and there were tables with a view of the golf course with a verandah. But, the majority of the tables were at the side hidden from the view and in a quite dark, large alcove (yet again!).This was considered the restaurant mentioned on our arrival at reception.

Upon leaving we were left with a sour taste as there was a surcharge on any credit card. I know that quite a few hotels do this, but they should absorb it in the price and not leave it as a nasty shock upon checkout. Who carries that much cash anyway - you don't have a choice!

We weren't be staying here again!

Dear Felix,

Thank you for your review. I am glad you enjoyed your spa treatment and your breakfast. These are areas where our guest consistently rate the hotel well.

Our hotel is 100% non smoking so I am surprised that your room smelled of smoke and that you didn't mention it to reception as we could have investigated the matter further and dealt with this situation as it arose.

With respect to our dining option Harvey's is very popular with your choice of outdoor, casual or formal dining options available. On the weekend there was some great entertainment also. It appears you may have been seated at the wrong spot. I will speak to the staff in Harveys to try ensure people are happy with their decision on where to sit.

FInally with respect to value and credit card surcharge. You paid $454 for your stay on a saturday night at our hotel. Had you stayed on a night other than Saturday you could have saved $75. Your package included two Kodo massages (value $150 each), breakfast for two (Value $60 for 2), wifi ($12) and a delux room ($240/night for a saturday). . You pakage had a $150 saving built in.

With respect to credit card surcharge it is a standard practice to charge as this is a real cost incurred by the hotel on people who choose to pay with credit card. Guests are however informed of this on check in and informed that eftpost and cash do not incurr any fees.

Kind regards

We were quite surprised when we arrived at the hotel, it was decorated beautifully. The doors in and out of reception were constantly being slammed, someone forgot to adjust the door closer! we were hoping that we weren't going to hear that all night!
The young lady at reception was delightful, and detailed all the facilities within the hotel.
Upon entering our room, we were greeted with quite a strong musty, damp odour( room 128). When checking out, the couple before us, complained about the same odour!
The room, however, was large and roomy with a lovely king bed. The outside lining of the curtain(right side of window) looked like it had been stained from water coming inside the window.
The bathroom was quite large but had not been cleaned properly. A small note on the wall near the door, read that if the door was left open it could trigger the smoke\fire alarm, which could incur a fine. So, when the door was closed, a smearing of what seemed something like toothpaste was on the inside of the door! ( oblivious to housekeeping), and the lovely large bath tub looked a bit suspect around the drain.
Our dinner was wonderful, the maitre'd was entertaining and talkative. Our meal was lovely, accompanied by local wine and great live entertainment. Although, we were left waiting for approx. 15 mins. just to order our dessert.
Breakfast was great, good selection of all foods with a great view over the golf course.
In short, we would stay again, but only if we could purchase a well priced package( we purchased the romance package)

The staff are amazing. Friendly and attentive (rare these days).
I asked to be upgraded as soon as I arrived as the standard room allocated did not have a bath for my baby. The standard room was huge and the shower to match. Paying the extra to get a bath. You get a better view but the same size room. Beds are huge and comfortable. Room size is great. Bathroom is great. Mini bar options are good. Room service good; Bar and breakfast great. I fear their choice in flooring has let the hotel down in look, as it wears and looks like an old bears fur, but this does not disappoint my stay.

Room Tip: As mentioned above. The price different - with what I saw the standard has the same size rooms as th...

Spent two nights. all very comfortable. Hotel not 12 months old but due to design and materials it is already starting to wear around the edges. All good - friendly and helpful. breakfast very ordinary. - but fine if you like hotel breakfasts. cafes in Bowral or Berrima much better choice. Curious decor - all dim corridors and touch of Indonesian. no local feel at all to the place!! Rooms large and comfortable. But if you are a traveller - be warned this place hosts large weddings and such - and all those guests are not necessarily that quiet in the corridors after their parties. AND you must ensure you are on the golf course/mountain view side; the other side is the car park! Worth it if they one of their deals that includes free wifi. I would stay there again.

Room Tip: room must be on the golf course and mountain side - not the car park

Stayed 2 nights and would of styled longer. Since arriving at reception the feeling is warm and welcoming. The rooms are huge and the bathroom is great. We had a room overlooking the golf course and over to Gibraltar lookout, just magnificent. Buffet breakfast was delicious and dinner at Harvey's Bar was scrumptious. On the Saturday they had live music playing. We also had an one hour full relaxing body massage at the spa. Just bliss .
The feel of the hotel is modern and sleek. Would highly recommended for anyone staying in Bowral.
