“A very nice stay and very kind staff...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 22, 2013

I decided to take my daughter for her very first trip down to "the snow". I stayed at the Southern Cross Motor Inn (SCMI) back in 2006 (I'm wondering now why I never wrote a review about the place then...hmmm... one to ponder) with some mates for a weekend of skiing at Perisher.

We showed up mid-afternoon and given our room - B1 - a room with 2 bunk beds - 3 singles and one a twin. There was a small kitchen area, with convection oven, table with four chairs, fridge and stocked with plates, bowls glasses, cups and utensils. There was coffee, tea and sugar/sweetener available and small servings of milk in the fridge. There's a small LCD tv with remote and surprisingly - many TV channels available - as many as I get in the Sydney area.

The room was very clean - I didn't see anything wrong with the room at all.

There's a small bathroom with shower. The bathroom looked fairly new. The shower had good pressure and the water got hot pretty quick. I had to sit a bit side-saddled on the toilet as it's location next to the vanity was too close for my leg to squeeze by. Bar soap was provided, but no shampoo or conditioner - but no worries as we brought our own.

The mattresses were good and the linens clean and looked almost new. We slept soundly for the two nights we stayed.

There is a small split-system unit on the wall which provides heat or cold a/c. There is a remote to control the unit. It did a more than adequate job at heating the room.

At SCMI they have all gear needed for snow activities. We hired boots, pants, parkas and toboggans for a day at Perisher. The gear was in great shape and most of it looked new. Near reception they also have hats and gloves for sale.

SCMI is a family run business and they provide an extraordinary level of customer service. Ben and his wife are really genuine down to Earth people who know the area very well and provided great advice for our day in the snow.

The main building has bar area with fireplace and a kitchen. Upstairs is the main dining room and they have a buffet breakfast.

Berridale is a very small town - you'll almost miss it if you blink while driving through - but we really enjoyed our stay here. We ate dinner at the Berridale Pub one of the nights and it was a very nice dinner - real family style cooking.

We'll be returning to the snow next year for a bit of skiing and we'll make SCMI our home for our stay.

Note: Nearest grocery stores/pharmacies are located in either Cooma or Jindabyne. There is a petrol station in Berridale.

Room Tip: Just have a chat with Ben (or his wife) and they'll make sure they put you in a room you'll...

Stayed here for a couple of nights during a recent trip to the snow with the wife & 2 kids. Nothing fancy, but if you want basic, clean accomodation at reasonable rates ( compared to staying at Jindabyne or the Resorts) this is a good place to stay. Not sure what the cheaper cabins are like, but we paid a bit extra and booked one of the larger rooms . Clean, tidy & good heating. Dinner in their Bar /lounge area was good, can cook your own steak on the large grill they have, grab a beer or wine from the bar and sit in the lounge area by an open fire for dinner. Breakfast could be better though, paid $16 for a hot breakfast ( still cheap), but only consisted of sausages, baked beans & some watery eggs sitting in the servery. No Bacon though! - which you kind of expect as part of a hot breakfast - particulary when gearing up for a day at the snow. The usual toast, cereal, tea & coffee was also there. They have full Ski hire available as well, which is convienient. Motel is also close to the Berridale Pub, so another option for dinner if you want it. Nothing wrong with this place if you're after a couple of nights of basic accommodation, the staff are friendly & accommodating. Nothing was too much trouble, helped us with all our ski hire and a practice run on fitting the chains! If you're looking at a longer stay though and need eating out options, probably best to stay in Jindabyne. Would stay here again though.

Stumbled across this place while desperately searching for some accom for a last minute ski trip. Mates and I usually drive from Sydney and just stay a Sat night.

The place had 3 bunk beds which was fine. Basic, but warm and good value. Cool bar too if your looking for atmosphere.
