I decided to take my daughter for her very first trip down to "the snow". I stayed at the Southern Cross Motor Inn (SCMI) back in 2006 (I'm wondering now why I never wrote a review about the place then...hmmm... one to ponder) with some mates for a weekend of skiing at Perisher.
We showed up mid-afternoon and given our room - B1 - a room with 2 bunk beds - 3 singles and one a twin. There was a small kitchen area, with convection oven, table with four chairs, fridge and stocked with plates, bowls glasses, cups and utensils. There was coffee, tea and sugar/sweetener available and small servings of milk in the fridge. There's a small LCD tv with remote and surprisingly - many TV channels available - as many as I get in the Sydney area.
The room was very clean - I didn't see anything wrong with the room at all.
There's a small bathroom with shower. The bathroom looked fairly new. The shower had good pressure and the water got hot pretty quick. I had to sit a bit side-saddled on the toilet as it's location next to the vanity was too close for my leg to squeeze by. Bar soap was provided, but no shampoo or conditioner - but no worries as we brought our own.
The mattresses were good and the linens clean and looked almost new. We slept soundly for the two nights we stayed.
There is a small split-system unit on the wall which provides heat or cold a/c. There is a remote to control the unit. It did a more than adequate job at heating the room.
At SCMI they have all gear needed for snow activities. We hired boots, pants, parkas and toboggans for a day at Perisher. The gear was in great shape and most of it looked new. Near reception they also have hats and gloves for sale.
SCMI is a family run business and they provide an extraordinary level of customer service. Ben and his wife are really genuine down to Earth people who know the area very well and provided great advice for our day in the snow.
The main building has bar area with fireplace and a kitchen. Upstairs is the main dining room and they have a buffet breakfast.
Berridale is a very small town - you'll almost miss it if you blink while driving through - but we really enjoyed our stay here. We ate dinner at the Berridale Pub one of the nights and it was a very nice dinner - real family style cooking.
We'll be returning to the snow next year for a bit of skiing and we'll make SCMI our home for our stay.
Note: Nearest grocery stores/pharmacies are located in either Cooma or Jindabyne. There is a petrol station in Berridale.
