An unexpected find on the main street of Bega. Great, fresh vegetarian food, excellent coffee and other delights.

“Wouldn't go back”
Reviewed February 3, 2013

Just went in for drinks. Coffee is only served in a cup, no mugs. Iced chocolate was $4.00 in a little glass, no whipped cream & tasted like mint choc - one unhappy child. Not a very big venue.

“Red on the outside and ready to tempt on the inside”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

RED stands for Real, Ethical and Delicious, which is the creed that the Red stands by. We have been going there regularly since the Red opened several years ago, because they consistently serve healthy and delicious food. Tastes like what you could make at home, from your own veggie patch, if you weren't too busy or too lazy!
Most ingredients are locally sourced and organic and the veggies are fresh and delicious. The meat? Well, you won't find any because it's vegetarian; but don't let that put you off. Even my carnivorous husband is very happy to have his lunch at the Red, and he's even happier to have cake there - they are fabulous!
A slightly Germanic touch seems evident in the cakes. Maybe it's just that they have more wholesome ingredients (e.g. fruit, nuts, cheese) and less sugar than your typical Aussi-Anglo cakes. When there is chocolate, it is real chocolate, i.e. the dark stuff.
The coffee is good, but if you really want to be healthy, there is also a good range of alternative drinks - from true hippie dandelion lattes and chai, through to lovely flavored teas, juices and in season, sparkling drinks made on the premises, just like grandma made - pink lemonade, sparkling elderflower.
Back to the mains, the selection is fairly small but varied and often inventive. Prepared and presented with flair. Bread from Wild Ryes at Pambula is a real bonus, and, did I say, the vegetables are fresh and delicious?
Can get busy (and noisy) at lunch (since it's the best food in Bega), but if it looks too crowded, you can ask for take-away and eat it in the park or take it to the beach at Tathra. It comes in compostable containers - please make sure you dispose of them thoughtfully!
Oh, service can be on the slow side, but if you tell them you are in a hurry, they do try.
