“Okay, but...”
Reviewed August 25, 2012 via mobile

My wife and I had supper at the Baldachin. There is a pub side and a dining room side - same menu. We chose to eat on the dining room side. The decor and atmosphere were very nice. Unfortunately, however, the food wasn't great (only "okay"). It is overpriced for what you get in terms of portion size and quality. For example, we ordered the bruschetta as an appetizer. It was $9.99, but only included two small pieces and lots of greens (read way too many). It was tasty, but far too small for the price. Also, we both had sandwiches and the buns were toasted to the point of being hard. The prime rib on mine was almost burned. In addition, the service was mediocre. The waitress was pleasant enough, but never came back to check on us and it took a long time for her to remove our dishes after we finished eating, despite the fact that the restaurant was almost empty. We decided to go elsewhere for dessert rather than risk being disappointed further. Overall, the Baldachin was "okay", but wasn't great and we wish we had gone elsewhere.

“Used to be better”
Reviewed July 26, 2012

Most of my reviews are positive - this one isn't. The Baldachin used to be a wonderful place for a nice weekend dinner. The emphasis is on the past tense. Over the past few years the dining side of the establishment has gone down hill. The food we had was overcooked and poorly presented - albeit served by courteous staff. The emphasis seems to be on the adjoining pub that does have a convivial country-flavoured atmosphere and from one of our visits what seemed to me to be discordant music.

“Big disappointment”
Reviewed July 12, 2012

We ate in the Badachin Patio the other evening and I find it hard to give it much praise.
The setting could have been beautiful but we were seated at a patio table which had seen better days - a hole in the middle and tears on the surface. The server was harried and there was long pauses to get attention. The food was mediocre at best - my husband's wiener scnitzel lacked flavour and was a large piece of breaded pork fried but very lacking in seasoning. My chicken korma was small in size ( they had run out of chicken) and I was given a desert to compensate. Took ages to get the bill. Cannot recommend.

“Celebrating 48th wedding anniversary”
Reviewed November 27, 2011

"Talk about unusual circumstances if you will, but my wife and I decided to come back to Merrickville after some 30 years of summertime canoeing on the Rideau, to celebrate our 48th wedding anniversary. Where to stay ? The Baldachin Inn appeared on our Internet screen. Probing further, we read the incredible story of how a Historical Building was restored, from 1988 to this day, by a young couple David and Beverley Ellis. We booked a special package, we had a great dinner prepared by an outstanding chef, a wonderful romantic room to spend the night, we fell in LOVE with such a magnificent place, and we made new acquaintances in David and Beverley. We'll have many happy returns, no doubt! "
