Essentially, if you are an older person with a taste for silver service then you should enjoy what The Nare can offer. Rather awkwardly it sits surrounded by THE family beach on the south coast and is embarrassingly bad at catering for this market.

This may be because it is what it is, and I doubt this will ever change but I for one would love to see it learn from other hotels in Cornwall that have combined fine dining with family friendliness.

And please could the waiting staff smile occasionally, it really isnt that bad.

I took my Mum to the Nare for afternoon tea on Saturday and we had a very nice time! The young lady that served us was lovely, very professional, polite and made sure we had everything we wanted, 10 out of 10. I must say the scones were superb, the strawberry tarts delicious and everything was just right. Very nice.

This is a very expensive hotel and overall perhaps not worth the total cost; largely because of the disappointing food and the equally disappointing dining room itself. The dining room has very little style, basically an extended sun lounge with low ceilings and very ugly window frames. It looks out over the sea with stunning views.Food served at breakfast was equally disappointing, lacking in freshness and taste. I believe a new chef is needed with some new ideas to spruce up the food on offer. As the hotel is isolated one cannot easily go to a restaurant somewhere else. There was a dress code for gentlemen in the main dinnig room ( jacket and tie) but this was not enforced during our stay. In fact one can understand why some men resolved not to wear this in the evening as there was little glamour in the restaurant itself. However having said all that the hotel has a stunning location, staff are very friendly, rooms are beautiful and maintained to a very high standard. There are 2 swimming pools ( one inside) and a nice (albeit) small garden area.During our stay there was a mixture of young couples with children and more mature clientele, certainly not older people only.My advice to the hotel owner would be:concentrate on the dining room and the food.

Room Tip: If you can afford it have a sea view room.

My wife and I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights in June. It was our second visit, our first was 10 years ago.

This hotel is rated as the 94th best hotel in Cornwall according to Trip Advisor ratings. Trust me, there are not 93 hotels in Cornwall better than this hotel. This merits being in the top 10 without a doubt.

But I do think I know why it hasn't got a higher rating. Cost is probably one factor, and the other is that the clientele of the hotel are probably not Trip Advisor 'users'.

To see how good this hotel is, I would recommend as a minimum you have lunch or dinner in their Quarterdeck restaurant. When you see the location of the hotel (overlooking the beach and the sea), experience the food (Michelin star standard) and walk around the the garden and grounds (stunningly beautiful) I suggest you may want to return again, and even book yourself a room this time.

We had a lovely room overlooking the sea, enjoyed the fantastic food in both restaurants, enjoyed relaxing on one of their many conveniently placed garden seats to soak up the stunning views and even had the pleasure of being invited for a drink of champagne one evening with the owner Toby Ashworth. It was a very pleasant stay indeed.

There was only one but - there was an underlying feeling that you had to be a more regular guest to warrant a window seat in their main restaurant. We were consistently placed at an 'inner' table, even for breakfast, which resulted in us choosing the quarteredeck restaurant for our evening meals as well as breakfast. This wasn't too hard a sacrifice - in fact apart from it being a better view and more relaxing in the Quaterdeck restaurant, I'd even say the quality of the evening meal is better than the main restaurant (though both are of the highest standard)
I'm sure the hotel will deny my inference regarding their more regular guests , but there did seem to be a lot of regular visitors who were on first name terms with the staff who appeared to be given more favourable seating in the restaurant.

That's not to say the staff weren't unfriendly to us - in fact far from it, they would go out of their way to help you, converse with you and the way even some of the junior staff remembered your name was very impressive.

So a very good hotel and experience that deserves a much higher rating on this website. Thank you for a very enjoyable stay Nare Hotel staff.

We had often visited Carne beach and looked up at the Nare Hotel, so when we booked our holiday over Christmas near Carne we went for lunch at The Quarterdeck restaurant. It was a wonderful relaxed meal overlooking the sea, we took both our children, aged 9 and 12 and they were made to feel welcome with plenty of menu choices.

What a great jubilee weekend!

We (my wife, our 14-month old son, our dog and I) were looking for a quiet time away from London. My wife was recommended Cornwall as a destination (beautiful) and we booked a suite at the Nare, so that everyone would get some sleep as well.

Our choice could not have been better.
- The hotel's location is unique, effectively the only property on top of mile-long Carne Beach.
- Everyone at the hotel, starting with the owner, was more than accommodating with everything we might ask for, including baby-sitting our son during dinner for a small charge, and having our room a bit longer on departure day, so that our son could have his afternoon nap.
- The food (we had booked including breakfast, high tea and dinner) was to a very high standard in both the main dining room and at the Quarterdeck, the hotel's casual dining restaurant.

We arrived before the weekend and the average age was relatively high, many guests have likely come to the hotel since it opened 22 years ago, but come Saturday, there were plenty play companions for our son.

There was a nice family-friendly atmosphere for the entirety of our stay, though, without this becoming overwhelming - there are no small children allowed in the main dining room at dinner.

We will definitely be back.

Room Tip: Given the location, a sea view room is a plus...

We stayed here for 2 nights in a country view family room with our dog. Hotel is lovely, very clean and luxurious inside, staff exemplary, food exquisite and location gorgeous. But general upkeep and attention to detail to the external building and surroundings could have been better. For example, disappointing entrance to the hotel, evidence of weeds, peeling paint, baked on bird excrement on balcony, rusting terrace chairs, strimmed grass not collected and an empty dog water bowl. Also, rates seem very expensive compared with other quality hotels. I know this hotel has been voted best 4* hotel in Cornwall and I would agree from food and luxurious service/setting and inside. Perhaps not from the external perspective though.
