We went to the restaurant as a pre-holiday treat. We knew it was pub food but what a disappointment. Our daughter's main course (the steak) was "OK", her starter was just mushrooms in hot milk, no sign of garlic. My starter was just four prawns drowned in very hot, sweet chilli sauce and the fish pie main course was very dry and crying out for some kind of sauce - it could have been sensational. My husband's starter (whitebait) and the fish and chips were only "OK".

Perhaps the chef took the night off at short notice?? The waitress was also serving behind the bar and was talking across the restaurant to the people on the table beside us - very off putting.

We recently spent a weekend in picturesque Veryan, and had an anniversary weekend ruined by the rude staff at this pub. Our guesthouse hosts had booked us a table at the Inn for Saturday night, but when we arrived they told us that while they had the booking in their register, they hadn't assigned us a table, so we could only eat on low tables at the bar (and they wouldn't squeeze us in despite the fact that there were several empty tables to be seen). Of course, anyone can make a mistake, and this would have been OK if they'd been at all apologetic about it, but we were really taken aback by the fact that they were almost aggressive in their self-defense. It took a good few minutes of trying to figure out a solution for a very snappy "sorry but that's it" to be said at all, and the man at the bar was laughing in the background. Unfortunately, the whole atmosphere was that this was a Local Pub for Local People, and they frankly didn't want our custom. Other visitors to Cornwall had better steer clear!

Spent just one night at the New Inn, loved the buzz and the host Simon was helpful and friendly. Veryan is a pretty village not too blighted by second homers

The B&B section of The New Inn was great, with a fairly large room and en-suite (for the UK). The bed was comfy, the shower worked well enough (although the pressure wasn't the "knock you over" strength I usually like), and there was room for our 2 1/2 year-old's travel bed to the side - in other words, it was very comfortable. Also, Simon (the owner) is extremely nice and cooks a tasty breakfast. The only drawback as a B&B would be for early sleepers or those (like us) traveling with small children - it IS a pub downstairs, and the sound of the pub does travel to the room.

Apart from that, the village is charming, and relatively close to some of Cornwall's attractions (i.e. The Lost Gardens of Heligan, the Eden Project, etc), although it is a bit of a drive on some frighteningly narrow roads. Getting to the New Inn and getting around is a fairly fun adventure, though, and I would love to go back and video the drive ... but trust me, a SatNav is a must if you want to find anything out here.
