“Very pleasant New Year's Eve”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2011

Just a brief follow-up to our last review. We stayed for 2 nights (December 31 + January 1) with 4 other friends. We had a most enjoyable evening, thanks mainly to the impeccable food and generally friendly atmosphere. Keep up the good work! We'll be back in the summer.

We've never been made to feel as unwelcome and in the way as we were at this hotel. (we stay in a lot of hotels, and we're not particularly fussy people).

We stayed, and dined at the hotel for two nights. The hotel was very quiet, with only a handful of guests staying. On both evenings the management (who did not once introduce themselves to us) were entertaining friends extremely loudly in the bar. This meant that we were totally ignored when we came down for a "quiet" drink, (eventually a young waitress was called to serve us . . . what a nuisance we were being!), However, to avoid the loud, incessant, boorish, shouting (conversation) we went into the guests sitting room. We didn't fare any better there. The reception phone (just outside the sitting room) was constantly ringing but not being answered . . . because the staff were in the bar!.

We had to eat in the bar area (the dining room wasn't being used while the hotel was quiet). We had to squeeze past the management group. Our friendly "good evenings" were barely acknowledged, and our table was uncomfortably near the party (there was no one else dining that night). We were left feeling awkward and in the way, and any hopes of a romantic meal a deux were thoroughly shattered by the noise (we honestly had difficulty hearing each other). This was more or less repeated the second night - except we requested a table as far from the noise as possible, and discretely enjoyed drinks in our room rather than the chilly, noisy sitting room.

We recently booked into the Hotel for dinner and were a little concerned about what to expect when we saw the rather cluttered/muddled check in desk area and the informal dress of the management(?) .... especially since this was to be a belated wedding anniversary dinner.
However, there is no doubt that this hotel benefits not only from its glorious location overlooking the sea and Lizard lighthouse - but also from an extremely talented chef.
The small conservatory style dining room which was being used out-of-season was very neatly presented and every table was next to the windows so that all those dining could enjoy the stunning views.
In spite of being towards the end of the summer season the menu still offered an amazing selection of dishes to please just about everyone. We started with oysters (for her) and a game terrine plus pate (for him .... "the best pate I have ever tasted" ... and he is a chef!)
Main courses of brill plus crab lasagne - and venison accompanied by a delightful mini venison hotpot - were equally delicious - so we just had to make room for something from the dessert menu .... homemade macaroons for her and freshly baked mini donuts with coffee brulee for him.
The waiting staff were efficient and friendly throughout our meal.
All in all - an excellent evening and so glad we did not judge on first appearances. We hope to come back!

We booked for 3 nights after reading so many positive reviews on Trip Advisor. We booked a C-class room which, although lacking the sea view, was comfortable, exceptionally clean (and remained this way throughout our stay thanks to the cleaning staff) and large enough for our comfort.

Housel Bay is family-run which is evident in the constant presence of the owners, who are friendly and welcoming. The location is superb and is near enough to the local village in order to enjoy a variety of eating and drinking, not limited to the hotel. As hospitality staff ourselves we were impressed by the fully-stocked bar and comfortable bar area.

A couple of small niggles which did spoil our visit slightly. As a vegetarian I did not appreciate the lack of vegetarian option at breakfast, being told instead that I could "choose to not have certain things" in the full breakfast. So in losing the bacon and sausage, I was left with very little to actually be worth the price of a full-price cooked breakfast, leaving me feeling a little disgruntled, as at £90 per room a night I would expect a decent alternative for vegetarians. The other options on the breakfast menu were a continental breakfast (with ham) or kippers.

We also found it a little rude that, on asking for a cheese plate at 8.30pm in the bar area (the room guide DOES state that "limited room service is available during meal times") we were told simply "no", as the kitchen was apparently too busy (2 tables of 6 on a Saturday night means no room service?). This was rectified however later in the evening as we were then offered to have the cheese plate a few hours later as we were still sitting in the bar. On its arrival I would like to state that it was simply delicious, with home made oatcakes. Wonderful.

The service received overall from waiting staff and hotel owners was always pleasant and friendly and we would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Cornwall who is looking for a little peace and quiet with one of the best breakfast views I have ever enjoyed.

This was our fourth visit, second time this year. Perhaps there are a couple of details that need tweaking, but where isn't there (except in your own home!). There always seems to be some interesting little twist to this place and right now it's the food. Since our first visit the cuisine has been above average, but the present chef is the best yet. To the best of our knowledge there is nothing in the neighbourhood to match it for down-to-earth quality, imagination and presentation. Keep it up Housel!

What a fantastic stay. Superb seaview room. The food under the new chef Joe Roussel is outstanding; a quite magnificent relaxed dining experience; the food and view combining wonderfully. Quite the best restaurant food eaten in a very long while, both fish and meat dishes. The pan fried halibut with crab lasagne was sublime.

We found this hotel towards the end of our walk to the lizard ,the setting overlooking the most Southerly Point in England was stunning. The waiter seemed a bit grumpy at first but we quickly warmed to him.We had the lunch menu which was excellent, my steak sandwich just melted in the mouth and my wife`s scallops on a bed of butternut squash purree was one of the best she had eaten. We had a cheese course between us with the cheeses at the perfect room tempeture and an excellent selection of local cheeses. At the end of the meal the chef came across and we found out that he made the bread for my sandwich, the biscuits for the cheese course and all the pickles.
He had only joined the hotel this year and was trying to build up its reputation.
We certainly enjoyed our expieriance and will be going back.
