“A suprising find”
Reviewed October 14, 2012

Recently stayed in Cornwall for 5 nights and one day visited the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Having finished my tour I found their restaurant packed so decided to go into St Austell for some shopping and a late lunch. St Austell itself was very disappointing and by the time I had walked around and in and out of one pub it seemed my only choice of eating places was fast food restaurants. Then I happened upon the White Hart, looked inside to find a very dated bar area but with several people having tea and by now I was getting really hungry.

I asked the very friendly, cheerful young lady behind the bar if I could have some food, bearing in mind that it was by now about 3.30pm. No problem she said and settled me down at a table with a menu, drink and some daily papers. As I had had nothing to eat since breakfast time I asked if I could have a steak (expecting the usual "oooh no we stopped serving hot food at 2pm and start again at 6pm" response) but the order was taken happily.

Must admit that while waiting for the steak I was rather dreading what I may get, but when it arrived it was superb, beautifully cooked sirloin steak tender and juicy, lovely fresh chips, grilled mushrooms, peas and the best onion rings I have ever had. I was offered a pudding but couldn't eat another morsel so sadly had to decline.

I really get sick and tired of not being able to get a decent hot meal out of "accepted" hours but full marks to the White Hart for their cheerful bar staff, willingness to give a customer what they wanted and to producing such a good meal. As a single lady they also made me feel very welcome and at ease.

Don't be put off by the rather shabby appearance when first entering, it is a gem of a place for a meal.

We have stayed at many 4 star hotels, and whilst the reception areas are usually gorgeous, bedrooms are sometimes a let down. This is not the case at The White Hart! Having been unable to book our first option in St Austell, we booked The White Hart for a cheap alternative for somewhere to crash before a wedding. The bar, reception, lounge area and resturant are modern, snug and welcoming. Our bedroom was roomy, tasteful, extremely clean and had an air of 'home from home' and an added bonus of thoughtful touches of a decent hairdryer to use
in a well lit, large bathroom, high quality hot chocolate saches in the bedroom and a fabulous mattress!
The staff were friendly, good humoured and helpful. There was no problem in extending our checkout time the next morning and the breakfast was enormous and tasty. All in all a great find and an oasis in a rather sad St Austell..

Room Tip: Prepare to unbuckle your belt after the cooked breakfast!

I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay with us; we always strive to create a home from home experience for our guests. We were particularly pleased that you found the mattress so comfortable as we have invested in new luxury hand-made Vi-Spring beds as part of our rolling refurbishment.

Thank you again for your comments and I very much hope we can welcome you back in the very near future.

Believe it or not this was one of the only places we could find for dinner when we looked around St Austell.. The food options offerd by this town were a bit disappointing really but the dinner at this hotel was OK.

Food was good, service good and good value for money.

Thank you for your recent feedback - we are so pleased that you enjoyed your meal with us.

We appreciate that St Austell town centre has limited venues for dining and are pleased that we were able to cater to your needs. We endeavour to offer good quality meals for our Hotel residents and visitors to the area so very much appreciated your positive feedback. We hope you will visit us again in the future.

We have not stayed here, but we regularly call in for a beer if we are in town so thought we would try it for dinner out.
The food is good, they have a specials board but we all had burgers which are home made and quite tasty, beers are well kept and the staff efficient and freindly.

Booked into the hotel for one night as a stop off before going to Porthleven. Had a nice friendly welcome from the staff at the front desk. The building is lovely and has a lot of history behind it which you could read in the guest pack.
We had an evening meal in the hotel restaurant which was ok, my husband had fish pie which was very tasty and again the staff very good.
The rooms were clean and comfortable. We had breakfast in the morning which was included in the price, there was alot of choice and very tasty. Would definetly book again to stay.

Just got back from an excellent hotel, The White Hart, St Austell. My Partner and I stayed for the night following a great time at the St Austell brewery tour which I thoroughly recommend. The hotel itself was in the nicest part of a very ordinary town. The welcome we got was excellent and courteous. Our room was very clean and up to date in terms of decoration - there was also lovely handmade Cornish soap, shower gel & shampoo as well as a very comfortable bed. There was a good selection of quality drinks available in the room and a well kept pint of Tribute on the bar. People below discussed the noise from clubbers but the new secondary glazing kept this out and the church clock was not a problem - in fact, it was rather reassuring.
The food (we ate at dinner and breakfast) was fresh, hot, very tasty and cooked to order using local produce (although the cheap sausage at breakfast could have been of a higher quality). We we're very pleased with the whole experience and would happily recommend others. Well done to all the staff and Managers!
