We stayed two nights with a half board arrangement including golf for two days.
Very friendly, welcoming staff all the way from the snappily dressed front door man through reception and all the way to the dining room. The owners ( or manager) have obviously gained their staff well and they all seemed to have a sense of ownership for the hotel even though many were from distant climes. Could not fault the general quality of the food and service.
Two little blots on the copybook, however: the lounge waiter on our second evening was almost un- attractable. He walked back and forth from bar to lounge with his head studiously down, avoiding any eye contact. It took 15 minutes and almost a rugby tackle to get his attention. Second - our room 104 - was directly above the main entrance from the garden to the bar. Since there was a wedding reception on that evening, it meant a lot of noise from the garden and (since smokers are banished to the outside) cigarette smoke drifting up into our room. I would suggest asking for rooms with a higher end number - over floor number plus 10 - to avoid the same problem.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms with low end number - e.g. 1 to 10 after the floor number - to get away from being above...

From the moment you walk in be prepared for a wow. A door man with a top hat openning the door for you, a manager on the top the staires welcoming you and showing you to reception, and that's just a start, the check in is text book top hotel. We thought we were special!! ( But no thats a standard in this hotel) Another couple arrived just after us had exactly the same treatment as us but this time in French by the same manager who welcomed us than he walked straight behind reception to check them in. The room was a good size and spotlessly clean, the view over the bay was breathtaking as it was our first time visiting Cornwall. The spa was nice and relaxing we didn't have any treatment but the girls were very chatty, helpful and supplied bath robes and showed us around. We came to the bar for a pre-dinner drink a manager welcomed us at the door, we sat down, drinks, nibbles, menu ........ Very friendly but yet professional staff, the restaurant was exactly the same food very good service is what you expect in a 5 * ++.
Thank you to all the staff and management for making our stay very special we will be coming back soon. B & C

I don't know quite what to say about this hotel. As an elderly couple we found the hotel very welcoming. The concierge asked if we wanted help with our luggage on arrival and receptionist was very friendly, telling us our rooms were not yet ready but would be by three o'clock. We went to the lounge and this is where problems began, sitting in an alcove in the sun we thought we would have a coffee. It took much signalling and calling before a waiter appeared and asked us rather aggressively if we were residents. We did get a coffee, reception provided us with the free wifi password and we waited until our room was ready.A very pleasant room with a walk-in shower as requested. Also nice bath with shower over it.Went downstairs to the lounge for a pre-dinner drink.Again couldn't get service for about a quarter of an hour. Finally got a drink with some nice nibbles.Went to dinner, very nice, though I didn't find the Table D'Hote menu terribly inspiring and it was very expensive to go off menu.Five pounds extra for a prawn cocktail!!! Twenty-one pounds extra for dover sole! Service reasonable as they were quite busy but no wine waiter appeared despite of requesting one.Didn't get the early morning call as requested but still made breakfast which was very good, buffet style.Bed very comfortable; but one problem the walk-in shower had no hand rails and so was difficult to use for anyone with balance problems like my wife.
The following evening sat near the bar for pre-dinner drinks and still had to wait for service.Food in restaurant again very nice but choice again a bit limited.Waitress very efficient this time and a wine waiter did appear.
At breakfast the next morning my wife, having had what she said was a very nice kipper the day before, said she would try the haddock.Mistake, A small piece of rather dry haddock.Poor service again in the lounge in the afternoon when we tried to get tea.The staff seem to spend their time at the bar with their backs to the room.
The Table d'Hote menu on the Sunday night was even more limited. But the food is good. They were not so busy that night so we had a wine waiter who recommended a wine.
No early morning call again on Monday morning.Checkout was easy and we were offered help with our luggage.
We had to change the dates of this visit for family reasons and this was handled very well without any extra costs.
Would I go again? Probably but I would not book dinner, bed and breakfast. We don't eat a lot now and it would probably be cheaper to select what we fancied.

This has always been somewhere that has been recommended to my fiancé and I and when we finally managed to get the same time off together we shot down to Cornwall and had no hesitation as to where we wanted to stay. Booking process was easy and flawless. When we got there (the pics do it no justice) I completely lit up! It was getting gloomy and there was a light coat of mist coming up off the sea but it looked amazing just from the car park... There was a helpful friendly service as we arrived and we were promptly checked in and show to our room. For a standard double room I thought it was very generously sized indeed! Everything you could want in a hotel room plus the magnificent view!!
As dinner time approached we sat in the lounge for a little while and found our feet and looked through what we could do whilst in the area, the staff all seemed very happy working and it seemed effortless for them to be so polite and kind to the residents. We were made to feel like vip's! Lovely!
We were seated again by lovely members of staff who were very attentive throughout the whole meal, I honestly felt like they were my own personal waiting staff. Along with the Devine food and generous array of choices it's safe to say this break is always going to Boone we will remember! The hotel in general has such motivated and happy staff who make the residents feel relaxed. There's no clinical 'are you ok there' in this place.. It's all a matter of the staff genuinely want to help you and care about whether they are meeting your needs or not. I honestly have never come across such lovely staff in SUCH a beautiful setting before... Only down point is that there're only 5 stars... I would give it10/10 and recommend the Carlyon bay to anyone and everyone looking for a relaxing break in Cornwall. Thank you so much to all at Carlyon bay hotel x

The hotel is well situated and extremely well appointed. The room was clean and well furnished. The beds were comfortable, though having two single beds pushed together does not make a double bed. Though this is not uncommon in many hotels, I expect better from a hotel advertising itself as being suitable for ‘some magical time with your partner’.

During the night there was a fire alarm and we gathered with the other guests in the lounge for approximately 25 minutes. The Communication during this event was ad hoc and if you were lucky enough to be near it, then you could hear it, if not then you did not receive direct communication, surely the PA system could have been used.

As we happened to be sitting close enough to the door we overheard the manager/supervisor telling other guests that the alarm was due to a fault in the fire detection system, located in the cellar/beer storage room, and that the person with the key was not on-site. At no point during our stay was an apology given for:

1) The fault.
2) The haphazard approach to resolving the fault.

When we came down to breakfast later that morning, we were sat at our table, and then promptly forgotten. We had to ask for:

1) Tea/Coffee.
2) Cups for the above.
3) Toast which never came (I gave up after the second reminder).

And lastly during checkout, the lady dealing with us never asked us how our stay was; and when we brought up our complaints, she was all but dismissive. She said she would ‘mention it’. No apology was given for any of the issues raised. This is hardly appropriate for a 4 star establishment. And it is certainly far below what I would expect from a hotel which amongst its’ advertising blurb uses the phrases;
“while our staff treat you to the ultimate in charming and attentive service”, and speaks of ‘impeccable service’.

I wrote to the hotel to complain but the response was dreadful - embarassing even.
