Description: The Waterwheel Inn was built in the late 1700s. It is steeped in the industrial history of Cornwall as it was once a tin smelting house and then involved in clay drying. It is set in a beautiful wooded valley next to St Austell's White River and just 10 minutes walk from the town. The restaurant is elegant but informal with exposed granite walls, oak floor and a log fire for cold winter evenings. We serve unpretentious, plentiful, freshly prepared meals including a 2 and 3 course menu for £14.95/£17.50, main meals from £10.95 and an a la carte menu with fresh local fish and seafood specials, plus extra mature chargrilled steaks.

We came here in August for my brothers wedding reception. Everything was lovely. The menu that they chose was great and had a great selection to choose from. Very good food and very good wine. The service was excellent even though there were alot to cater for at the same time. Lovely place for a intimate reception. Everyone said how lovely it was and everybody had a great time here.
We do eat here often as a family and we will be coming back again very soon I'm sure. Thank you for a lovely afternoon/evening and all the others.

“lovely people and beautiful food”
Reviewed October 19, 2013

Said it all in the title really. We will definatly return.
Scallops and steak were tender always a good indication the chef knows what they are doing.
The biggest thing to remember is to leave room for pudding, I nearly passed but the raspberry and white choc cheesecake was superb

“Lucky find in St Austell”
Reviewed October 17, 2013

We didn't quite know what to expect from the outside of this restaurant but were really pleased we tried it. It is very attractively decorated and has a lovely relaxed atmosphere. The owner is very welcoming and our meal was very enjoyable. Both the food and wine were reasonably priced.

A lovely restaurant offering a great choice of food including interesting vegetarian options. Very reasonably priced- a two or three course menu available- fantastic food and plenty of it. Four of us eating different things- and every meal was delicious.

“Pretentious pub grub”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

Oh dear. As a devout foodie, I have to say the new owners of this restaurant clearly aren’t. All the investment has been put into the rather pretentious refurbishment and decor with little effort being bestowed on menu choice, food quality or execution. The atmosphere was non-existence. I’m not normally in favour of piped music but as the place was less than a quarter full it was like dining in a silent order monastery. Waiting to be seated in the large bar area was painful – hardly any seats and a baby grand in the corner that no-one could, or ever had, played. Some nibbles with drinks would have been appreciated too.
There was nothing we fancied on the set menu so opted for the a la carte. After waiting for far too long (it really wasn’t busy at all) our bland and uninspired food was served. It wasn’t horrible, just very average pub grub. Chef obviously didn’t do anything else and we noticed that everyone else’s meal was served with the same holy trinity of pub grub veg (you know the one’s I mean). Nor had he heard of seasoning – we had to ask for a mill for pepper and there was no sea salt. At the prices they were charging I expected much, much better. Stick to what you know guys and open an honest and reasonably priced eatery that isn’t trying to pretend it’s something it can’t possibly achieve.

An honest and reasonably priced eatery is exactly what we are, serving good quality, freshly prepared meals in a beautiful dining room. We do not sculpt vegetables or serve nibbles, sea salt can be provided if requested and a concert pianist recently played the baby grand.
