“So many small points let down what could be a great hotel”
Reviewed September 23, 2011

We stayed at the Woodland Lodge for a week in September. The cabins were spotlessly clean and the overall first impression was good, comfy beds, sparkling kitchen, etc. A few small points - the living room furniture is uncomfortable - we had to remove the back cushion of the sofa just to be able to sit on the sofa and the chairs are small with hard edges. The kitchen was not well equipped, no oven glove, no salt or pepper, no vegetable peeler, such small things and so easy to remedy! The big niggle was the internet - it wasn't working at all and I was given conflicting information on this. 6 days into our holiday they provided us with a dongle.
The staff are sweet but no one seems to be in charge or able to resolve any problems.
We ate at the restaurant on our second last night - food tasted very good, staff nice but inexperienced. I was however violently ill that night, so I'm a little bit concerned that the inexperience of staff is impacting kitchen hygiene.
The setting is in need or landscaping and close to a busy road.Overall, this could be a great place to stay but whoever is in charge doesn't seem to want to put in the effort to look after guests' needs or to react to any of the problems. Definitely not 5 star, except for the prices they charge!

Room Tip: The lodges are graded (and priced) according to the privacy factor - all bedrooms are downstairs wit...

The Cornwall is set in beautiful grounds near St Austell and only a 5 min drive from the beach. I found the staff very welcoming and helpful. We had a deluxe woodland room which overlooked the estate. It was situated on the top floor. The room had good soundproofing, a lovely rainfall shower, fridge and bottles of still and sparkling water replaced every day. Fresh milk could also be requested. The room was well furnished with spotless bedding. My only complaint like many others on here is that it got very hot. This wasn't a major issue for us really since it was so cold outside!

The breakfast had a good selection with some dishes cooked to order. We ate once at the Acorns restaurant. The food was excellent although our dessert took over 30 mins to arrive. The waiters were very good. I felt it was a little unfair on them since the problem was related to the more expensive restaurant below (a large group had arrived apparently delaying things).

The spa is very good although the whirlpool could have been hotter! I would definitely recommend this hotel.

We recently had a 4 day stay at the hotel which has not been opened very long. The refurbishment and new development have been undertaken very well and are quite impressive except for some minor annoyances:-

1. The car park is not properly surfaced and so when it rains can be quite a mess.
2. Having got in a mess because it did rain there is no shoe cleaning facility.
3. The deluxe rooms are well sized and fitted out but the bath / shower is in the room with no separate bathroom.

The hotel facilities are very good and the spa & gym very well fitted out.

The restaurant experience was mixed. The food and service were generally very good but the wine list was a bad let down as the majority of bottles on offer were not available. The reason given was down to a change or potential change in supplier. Somehow this does not make sense.

The bar whilst very comfortable was not well stocked and was very expensive.

Breakfast was excellent.

Whilst these niggles are minor in themselves they do add up and what could be 5 star only warrents 4.

Room Tip: Due to the low rise design of the development rooms can be a long walk from the main areas.

Just stayed for a long weekend and first impressions lasted through out. Staff on reception were very friendly, genuine smiles and ready to assist. We stayed in a Woodland Hotel deluxe room which has a lovely kingsize bed which is 2 singles zipped together - very comfortable. Plenty of space, clean and comfy. We eat in the Acorn restaurant in the evening where again the staff we very friendly and the food very good (fish and chips excellent!) - this the more informal place to eat but no compromise on quality. The Spa is also very good - especially the infinity pool. Already planning our next stay but this time for a week.

Room Tip: Woodland rooms all have a small balcony and views across the estate

We really enjoyed our Cornwall escape and were delighted on first entering this hotel and exploring our room (White house room). The decor throughout this hotel is of 5 star quality but unfortunately the overall experience does not match up!! The hotel is let down by misleading signs to the spa, uninterested bar staff, inattentive service and housekeeping (we reported our safe locked on first entering our room and despite reminding staff it was never reset, we also waited over an hour for an iron one evening before giving in, the same chips were on the floor of the lift at the start and end of our visit and when checking out of our room we checked under the bed for lost items to discover a vicks nasal spray, sock and lipstick from previous guests-yuk!) The biggest disapointment came in trying to order a nice bottle of wine for a special treat, the first 5 bottles we tried were missing and yet no apology was given- when stating that this really wasn't good enough all we got was an empathetic "I know, terrible isn't it". The Arboritum restaurant is the one true shining light, both food and for the first time in our stay, service were impeccable- would truly recommend! Despite this review we would stay again, the hotel and outlook are very beautiful and the price is very reasonable, just such a shame that they don't fill their potential. It's good but could so easily be fabulous......

I stayed one night at The Cornwall Hotel Spa, it is located in a quiet, secluded location south of St Austell.

The hotel is basically a refurbished old house containing restaurants and a bar. There is a modern wing extending behind the house containing the guest rooms. A separate wing contains the spa, including a gym and pool.

Staff were all very friendly and the atmosphere is relaxed.

I had dinner in the Restaurant, which was very pleasant.

This is a great hotel; with funky/chic decor and good sized rooms.

We stayed 3 nights - 2 nights in a lodge and 1 night in the hotel. I would recommend the hotel rather than the lodges; as they are for sale, so didn't seem to be the biggest focus for the hotel. The lodges were very modern and a great size - but the rooms just felt more luxurious and were also a good size. We had a room in the new wing, so it had a very nice balcony.

The lady on reception was so friendly and couldn't do enough for you! If only you could bottle her warmth and friendly nature!

The service in the bar and lounge wasn't very good - as we had booked afternoon tea, but they didn't have any record of the booking - and weren't very helpful sorting it out! On the other hand, the afternoon tea was very good.

The restaurant is amazing! The food is superb and the menu choices were excellent at Dinner. Breakfast service and food were both excellent - and the restaurant was a very relaxing experience.

The Spa was excellent - which a fantastic pool. The steam room was out of order during our stay, but that didn't matter. The staff around the spa were very friendly and helpful. We also had treatments, and the treatment rooms were beautiful and it was excellent value for money.

I would recommend this hotel as a relaxing stay. There's not much to do in St Austell; but there's so much within a short drive to see and do.

Room Tip: Stay in a room in the new wing - they've got balaconies.
