“Excellent weekend”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 21, 2013

Yes the outside needs painting but inside its great! We got married there and found everything we wanted catered for especially by Claire and Donald! Stayed for 2 nights and made to feel welcome and special. We use it for lunch fairly often and highly recommend the whole place.

Room Tip: I like the family room across the way but all rooms are good!

We were a bit disappointed when we first drove upto this accommodation as the white paintwork really needs to be touched up, it makes the place look unkempt/unloved and this is not the case when you go inside - so really need to address this. We stayed here for 4 nights over the weekend and we enjoyed the location. The room (number 9) was a little small but the hotel told us about that before we booked so we knew, however the view more than made up for this it was lovely. Breakfast was limited but really good quality and the staff/service was excellent. The bar is really cute and exactly what you'd expect from this beautiful part of the world, it's cozy and warm but some of the staff were a bit standofish (too good looking and too cool for school for his own good) so it felt like we were asking for too much, however overall staff were ok. We were allowed to bring our dog into the bar which was a real bonus - Rattlers cyder is a must, but be warned it's potent! In summary we would return, the location was great, the staff overall were great and it's excellent value for money.

Dropped into the bar for lunch after a coastal walk. It was a typical Cornish pub atmosphere. Quite dark but cosy. Nice in colder weather but not really what you want when it's sunny outside. We did see tables outside, across the road when we left. I asked what draft cider they had and was told Cornish Rattler which I then ordered. The bar girl disappeared for a while and then came back with a bottle of cider because the draught was off. That was ok but the bottle wasn't cold and she had opened it without asking me if I wanted it. The food was good and well presented. The bar girls were a bit dim but all in all the pub served our purpose.

Sadly although everyone was very friendly and welcoming and helpful too, the food left a great deal to be desired. Moules Marinniere was tasteless, could have been water with a bit of onion and cream for all the taste it had. The prawns with chilli and garlic tasteless also. Fish cakes with a hint d Tai flavours were ok but a bit mushy and soft. The Focaccia bread was more like Ciabatta. Best bit....desert! The dining room has hardwood floors and is noisy and unwelcoming, which also had an unhappy customer, so removed ourselves to the bar area. While the room was ok I was able to hear the people in the room above relieve themselves in the toilet and each flush...several times in the night. Didn't stay for breakfast so can't say. Would I stay here again? Short answer....NO!

Room Tip: Don't have a room in the annex, especially if there is someone in the room above!!

I have just returned from another stay at this friendly hotel.
Last time I visited, the breakfast service was bad, but Louise ( the owner ) has clearly worked on this and service was excellent this time. Her mum helped out one morning and made an exceptional waitress!!! Much better menu for the bar snacks too, and 'specials' have been re-introduced. A great idea.
Also found Freeview TV in rooms now which is a big improvement.
Am returning in September. Am sure it will be brilliant again.

As I come from Cornwall (but now live overseas), I used to visit the Driftwood Spars regularly and always enjoyed the ambience of the bar with its wood fires on cold winter's days and great views over Trevaunance Cove. Back then I never imagined that I'd have cause to be a guest at the hotel, but last October I spent 5 days here as part of a Welsh and Irish project team for which the hotel had been recommended by a Cornish heritage organisation. What a great choice it turned out to be and a wonderful trip down memory lane for me!

The room we had was fresh, bright and beautifully furnished with a nautical theme and colour scheme as befits the hotel's location in one of the most picturesque spots on the north Cornwall coast. The shower was powerful and hot, the bed spacious and comfy and we enjoyed a perfect night's sleep with no noise whatsoever. Breakfast served in the bright and airy restaurant with great sea views was plentiful and varied and I greatly enjoyed the full cooked choice, fresh juice and real coffee served by a very attentive member of staff. We even had a broadsheet newspaper delivered each day to pour over whilst enjoying our leisurely breakfast. Free Wi Fi is available and the connection is fast.

As a team we ate at the hotel each night and a long rustic table on a balcony reached by a flight of stairs was reserved for us which had terrific ambience. The menu was very varied reflecting the best of fresh Cornish produce and the food was delicious and imaginative. I particularly recommend the crab linguini! The bar was just about as I remembered it, with a vibrant atmosphere where local people interact well with tourists. As a huge fan of real ale, the discovery that this is now brewed on site was fantastic and I avidly availed of the opportunity to try all those that were available! Well done to the craft brewer for some excellent flavours! Indeed, the range and choice of beers, lagers and ales was highly impressive. Listening to a group of local people singing Cornish songs in harmony made me feel very homesick indeed and I was delighted that the old atmosphere of the place hasn't changed at all with the passage of time! In fact I invited my family to join us for dinner on our last night and they were so impressed, they intend to go back to eat at the restaurant again.

I was very reluctant to leave and may I say how great it is that this hotel is being run in such a capable and able manner by local people. Well done Lou and team! Kernow bys Vyken!
