The Driftwood Spars B & B
Ranked #2 of 4 Hotels in St Agnes
Certificate of Excellence

The Driftwood Spars is in a great location, has a friendly staff and it is a pleasant place to stay, however, I question whether it rates the Automobile Association’s 4-star rating. It just misses it, somehow.

As I said previously, the location is great – on a hill overlooking the beach at St. Agnes and it’s just a quick walk down to the cove. Also easy access to the coastal paths if you're planning on hiking. The view from the dining room is impressive, but the dining room itself is rather spartan – a lot of empty space when we visited in July. We ate two breakfasts and one dinner there, the food was good, but not exceptional. The soups needed to be sent back to be reheated and a dish that was supposed to be served on a bed of white or Cannellini beans was served on garbanzo beans instead – no apologies or explanation given. At breakfast, hard as I tried, I couldn’t seem to get a cup of fresh, hot coffee.

The room was bright and clean, although small. I did have to laugh at the macramé light pull in the bathroom. The bathroom was spacious and bright and the shower had good water pressure and plenty of hot water.

There was a lounge (of sorts) for guests, but it wasn’t very inviting. It had overstuffed leather sofas, but no selection of daily newspapers or local guidebooks to look at while waiting for your traveling companions. If I could have sat there and had a pint while waiting, that would have been nice, but I didn’t see any signs that they offered that service, I guess they expected guests to go downstairs to the pub, which appeared to require guests to go outside and enter from the road.

With these shortcomings, plus the absence of an elevator up to the guest rooms, I’d rate it a 3-star, rather than a 4-star hotel or inn, however, if ever back in the area again, I'd probably stay there and I'd recommend based on it's location.

Had to ask for cutlery - no black pepper and bread mouldy - met with very casual response from nice young but untrained staff. Asking town prices for poor return. Toilets deserve a special mention - on a par with festival loos! Missed opportunity for such a prime location

Excellent hotel/pub. Room 8 was spotlessly clean ,very comfortable bed, well serviced with a fantastic sea view. Fab bars and restaurant , breakfasts to die for and varied and well prepared evening menu. Full complement of well trained, polite and articulate staff. Made welcome at every stage , and felt "at home" at once. The building itself if full of character , and in an idyllic setting.

Great location - room 1 overlooks the bay. Light, airy, clean room.

Good restaurant. Lunch - local fish n chips was excellent. Lightly battered and refreshingly fresh fish.
Full cornish breakfast was perfectly cooked with quality ingredients. I'm a sausage snob and was vey happy.

V friendly helpful staff.

Great pub downstairs but far enough away to not hear or smell it. Excellent ale selection.

Had a family meal in this Hotel, refused to pay due to the poor quality of the cooking. Ordered at 8.10 and got the meal at 9.20. Soggy Batter of the Fish and Chips, Mussels tasteless(only cream added to the basic commodity). Veg undercooked and cool. Potatoes not served at all. Sea Bass had no sauce whatsoever and Micro oven cooked instead of Pan Fried (crispy skin on the menu). Waiting staff very inexperienced and were not in the Restaurant for 15 minutes. Probably hiding with embarrassment Complained to the management on the evening.

My wife and I stayed just up the road from the Driftwood Spars this week, and adopted it as our 'local' for the few days we were in town. We had a super Sunday lunch here. I'm nervous about Sunday roasts, as many places are a disappointment, but not DS. A decent sized portion of excellently cooked beef, with a light, crunchy home-made Yorkshire pud, perfectly cooked veg, and a really meaty gravy... recommended.
Their ales selection must be one of the best in Cornwall, if not the best, and I was especially delighted to find one of my favourites - Skinners Heligan Honey - on draught.
Only a stone's throw from the beach, with two excellent beer gardens, and benches outside the door to enjoy the setting sun, I'd recommend DS to anyone.
As for comments about the locals - they seemed a friendly, welcoming enough bunch to me!

I stayed at The Driftwood Spars over the first weekend of July 11 for a family wedding. The entire weekend was a complete success due to the quality of service delivered by the hotel staff and the cracking facilities and location.

The hotel is situated less than a 5 minute walk from the beautiful bay with a restaurant, surf rental shop and cafe. There are good sized car parks (access is quite tight) and seating areas providing great views. The centre of St Agnes is a 10 min walk away from the shore up a bit of a hill and has restaurants, bars and surf shops. All are reasonably priced and provide good service.

The hotel itself has very good facilities-a dining room, a bar/pub with live music at the weekend, an elevated garden and easy access to the Coastal path.

The rooms are reasonably priced (around £50 per person per night depending on the size of the room) and have well sized bathrooms. The rooms are clean, fresh and well equipped with kettles, a tv and a telephone. Although the rooms are not enormous, they are certainly plenty big enough!

The food served in the hotel is lovely and the breakfasts are plentiful. Around 70 people sat down for the wedding reception meal and the meals were consistently of a high quality.

I used the surf rental shop (as did many of the guests) on the shore. Foam surf boards, boogie boards and wetsuits are all available for £3 per hour per item. The surf is beginner friendly and great fun.

All in all I had a brilliant weekend and recommend the Driftwood Spars to anyone looking for a relaxing break being looked after by a welcoming and helpful staff.

Can't wait to back!
