“Abysmal”
Reviewed August 27, 2013 for a stay in September 2012

Copy of email sent to the management company which would not accept any of the problems listed!

"I have tried to text you re your last message regarding the freesat box but unfortunately the mobile networks would not let me.

I do not accept that the freesat box has the same channels as the sky box, which clearly has a hd package. I also cannot accept that sky could take over a week to respond to a fault!

Aside from this there are a number of other issues regarding the property which were not detailed in the information provided before we arrived or on arrival. Some of these I feel are dangerous.

1. The beams in the kitchen and on the balcony have no indicators to show that they have a reduced/restricted height.

2. The shower has part of the casing missing.

3. The balcony at the side of the house (which indicates a fire escape but would equally be dangerous in the event of one) where the clothes line is has no fencing and any small child, infirm person or animal could fall over (the latter happened while we were there, we have had to utilise the patio furniture to prevent re-occurrence).

4 The smoke alarm battery requires replacing - a test upon cleaning should have indicated this.

5 The access road is unsuitable for vehicles with a low underside - no matter how slow or careful I am I cannot avoid some scraping/crunching - I cannot see any obvious damage to my vehicle as yet!; but I am loathe to take the car out unless absolutely necessary.

6 There appears to be no oil feed to the fire in the living room, the instructions for this in the property appear to be deficient and upon inspection it would appear that the fire it is some state of disrepair. Similarly the Aga in the kitchen and therefore was not even going to attempt to try to light this.

7. Not sure what you pay your window cleaner but he does not appear to be doing a good job (or even turning up?).

8. The second double bedroom cannot surely be described as such; it contains only a three quarter bed and very little other room for two adults.

9. As stated above there is very little mobile phone reception here despite the fact that we are with three separate providers.

10. Generally the accommodation could do with some tlc to bring it up to a decent standard.

11. We note there is no guest comment book at the accommodation that might have highlighted these issues earlier and future guests could see the investment made.

Despite the above we are enjoying our holiday but we feel that these issues need to be highlighted and addressed.

We will be returning to Seaton again as we now like it so much but not to the Overboard."

Management Response

Thank you for your feedback on Overboard and I notice that your holiday took place in 2012 despite the review being made in August 2013. The house was closed during the first 3 months of 2013 and underwent a refurbishment which included the removal of the Aga and the addition of a new shower room and lobby area on the ground floor including new flooring and a complete redecoration of the entire property. The house management company has been changed since your stay and the other minor issues you reported have been dealt with. The first two guests who stayed in May 2013 since the works were carried out have already re-booked the same weeks in May for 2014 so I think this is a credit to the improvements the owner has made in the property. The comments you have made regarding the roadway and beam heights are highlighted on the website and like many coastal areas of Cornwall mobile phone signals can vary from network to network and can be affected by local conditions from time to time also.

“Pleasantly surprised”
Reviewed July 26, 2013 for a stay in July 2013

The road is narrow, but the other few residents who live along route (a couple hundred yards) travel at a snail's pace and the chance of meeting someone coming the other way is pretty slim. Overboard's newly built parking area was ideal for our large estate car.
Maybe there had been a garden before the parking structure was built, but our dog loved the cool kitchen floor to snooze, the very large deck for sunning and the beach for romping.
The double glazing does seem to be in less than ideal condition in some windows - but we had some great weather so they didn't factor.
The door on the washer needs mending which required my wife's brains to suss out, but the machine did work. No Aga, and thank goodness in the summer there wasn't one. There is underfloor heating downstairs that we never had to use.
The kitchen is extremely well kitted out. There is even a Breville Cafe Series 4 slice toaster - which makes the world's best (and slowest) toast. Well worth the wait.
The local pub was boarded up and by the looks of it, that's probably a good thing. The bar almost next door serves a good pint of Doombar. The flat screen TV, blue-ray and Sky controls took my seven year old son a minute to fathom. It was a chore getting him to stop switching on the James Bond movie channel at every opportunity.
Glorious view, quiet and friendly spot with only the sound of the waves at night in the distance. I'm tempted not to post this as it will no doubt be booked solid from now on.
And another tip - We traveled from outside London starting late afternoon on a Saturday. No traffic whatsoever at any point on the journey.

Management Response
Jul 2, 2013
I am sorry to hear about the issues you had at Overboard and if you had reported the faults on the items you mentioned I am sure they would have been rectified by the house management team. The house under went some major refurbishment during April and May which included a complete redecoration, installation of a new shower room downstairs and a new lobby area with new flooring etc. The laundry facilities were moved into the kitchen area to were the old Aga was located and this has been removed from the property details now. Very sorry to hear about the Pub in Seaton now closing, but there is another bar and beach cafe there.
