Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed September 25, 2013

We have stayed at this hotel quite a few times and always find the staff to be very friendly and helpful and nothing is too much trouble. The food choice and service is excellent and we cannot wait to go back.
The Garden suite we stayed in was excellent and presented to us in pristine condition as always.

Although Redruth might not be your choice of destination the hotel is very central to many tourist attractions.

Room Tip: A Garden suite room is well worth the extra few pounds.Very quite location at the rear of the hotel...

Richard and Jane, we're so pleased that you continue to visit, it is always our pleasure to welcome you.

Whilst celebration suites with four poster beds are romantic, I have to say that the space, seating area and marble bathroom make Junior Suites my favourite room type also.

Location, location, location! You're right, we're only 25 mins from .... everywhere!

I will ensure that our team have sight of your review, as it is a joy to read and all that we could hope for in a guest review of Penventon.

We stayed two nights at the Penventon and found the hotel comfortable but were disappointed by the noise form the slamming of room doors with no dampers fitted - When we pointed out to the staff that we were woken at 3am with a late arrive we were told that the doors probably needed oiling! What? The second night (after the party night we were entertained by somebody throwing up in an upstairs bathroom in the early hours - thin walls/floors or just a very noisy visitor?
That said the food was excellent, but for the price paid we expected more.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in an area where the OTHER rooms have dampers fitted to their doors!

On both points, I'm going to have to say noisy guest.

Although not something we've thought of doing before, as not mentioned before, but we take your point; and will research having dampers fitted to bedroom doors.

It's good to hear that you were comfortable and enjoyed good food; I'm just sorry that the noise impeded on your stay.

Thank you for taking time to review, it is appreciated.

We're so pleased to have welcomed you again.

I like olde worlde. In view of the new period drama - Downton Abbey, we sometimes use the descriptive, Downton-esque!

We believe in our traditions and good service, and we're really pleased that our guests do too.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review, it's always a pleasure to hear from our guests.

Redruth is not the richest of areas. A former mining town, well past its peak, it is in receipt of EU redevelopment grants. From a tourist viewpoint, it is conveniently placed for both north and south Cornish coasts. The Penventon Park Hotel is a former mansion, built in the 19C by a brewery magnate. The park is all but gone, being largely tarmac today, apart from the entrance avenue.

The business strategy of the hotel seems to be cleft in two. On the one hand, there are aspirations to be posh. The brochures are littered with words like 'wealthy' and ''elite', even if they refer to a past of long ago. But the food is undoubtedly good. Locals come here for celebrations such as weddings and birthday dinners, because it could be thne most sumptuous place in the area.

On the other hand, someone in charge clearly wants to maximise the utilisation. To the horror of anyone who wants a peaceful dinner, a nightclub and ballroom have been bolted onto the side of the hotel, and rumbles and booms vibrate through the walls. No amount of piano-playing can hide the rumbles, although it had to be said that the pianists are good. Also in the spirit of asset utilisation, the hotel's spa pool has been opened up to locals for a parent-and-baby session on Saturday mornings. If you were in two minds about taking a dip, the thought of all those nappy-clad nine-month-olds having been in the water, some quite literally, is offputting.

The design of the rooms is from an era gone by. Many seem far too small to be described as standard doubles. Big enough for an itinerant salesman on his own, but not acceptable for a couple staying several days. Even the design of the larger 'garden rooms' is showing its age. Creaking from the room above -- couldn't they build concrete ceilings? The hot tap is far too hot, and not channeled into a single mixer outlet with the cold water. The ground floor rooms share a patio with the other rooms, which merges seamlessly with the gardens. You can't open the sliding door-window without creating a security risk. Goodness knows how people keep cool on hot summer nights.

We were advised on our first day not to park next to the trees, as previous guests had had their car broken into, albeit some years ago.

A final word about the dinners, where the food is very good. But you cannot go straight into the dining room. You arrive at your appointed hour, and they turn you away into a noisy bar, in the hope you'll buy a pricey drink, no doubt. Eventually you'll be given a menu, and some time your order will be taken. Perhaps 20-25 minutes after your booked table time, they tell you your table is ready. I've never witnessed anything like it, except on Fawlty Towers 'Gourmet Night' episode.

That all said, we have enjoyed our time here and taking in the wonderful experiences of Cornwall. I feel the Penventon had to sort out where it's headed, and wish it well. I don't know quite where it should head, but the tiny double rooms have to go, and the dining room has to be soundproofed. Also I really don't appreciate loud radio being piped in for my breakfast.

A mixed review, but I hear what your saying.

We advise guests not to park near the trees at this time of year, due to the birds above which tend to leave messages of good luck!

We operate a fine dining restaurant, offering good cuisine in a relaxing ambience; I'm not sure of any restaurant with a bar, that wouldn't give you time to have a drink and peruse the menu before taking you to your table.

I've not had anyone before even notice the Nightclub next door, it certainly doesn't feature once in any other trip advisor reviews. Possibly, you could've heard the entertainment from a wedding/function in an adjoining room; but again, this isn't usually apparent enough to cause inconvenience to leisure guests.

We play local radio of Cornwall in the morning, because it's generally a mix of songs, local news and advertisements which are quite often aimed at those visiting the area. I appreciate that this isn't something that appeals to yourself, but we won't be changing this, as for other guests it is well received.

I can't really read your review, as to whether you would return to us or not. We do hope so, but if not, we hope that you will continue to enjoy many more visits to Cornwall in the future.

We had a very pleasant stay. The staff were very polite and helpful. Mandy and Nigel on reception couldn't do enough to help and Harriet in the restaurant was the same. The meals were very good and the breakfast was exceptional . This was our second trip and we will definitely be returning!!!

One suggestion would be a light over the sign at the entrance to the hotel as it is very hard to see the entrance in the dark .

We stayed at the Penventon Park Hotel prior to competing in the Stithians triathlon, then stayed on an extra night for some R&R. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and were happy for us to keep our bikes in our room - not something tolerated at lower end "chain" hotels. We would thoroughly recommend the Penventon Park hotel and intend to stay there again in the future.

From leisure breaks to weddings, corporate and conference, celebrities and now triathlon competitors; we welcome you all!

Wow, I bet you needed the extra day of R&R, after competing in a triathlon; it makes us feel tired just thinking about it.

A lovely review thank you, and great to hear that we were comfortable and appropriate for your stay, for shall we say "business and leisure"

We will look forward to welcoming you back, and thank you for your great review.
