“Friendly, welcoming and very informative”

Wingz Bird Sanctuary
Ranked #2 of 9 things to do in Par
Certificate of Excellence

We also visited Wingz on its free weekend and had a lovely morning. Not only do they rescue unwanted birds from zoos and private homes, but they are part of the endangered species breeding programme for birds and are also great conservationists. With young children in mind, there are also Meerkats, Wallabys, Guineapigs and Chipmunks at the Sanctuary. They have plans to hopefully build a centre to treat injured wildlife, which is sorely needed. We had a cup of tea in the very spotless tea-room and a very nice piece of home-made cake. Excellent toilets, a small gift shop and a children's play area. A lovely place to visit for children and adults alike

Well, we followed the advertising and got in for free this weekend. We were very agreeably surprised by what is hidden behind the fencing. There's lots of birds and animals to see , quite close up, many birds which say "Hello" and the whole atmosphere is very friendly and welcoming.

It isn't the biggest zoo in the world , but kids will be captivated by so many birds and attractions in such a small area. (Adults too really) Add a cafe and a shop too, and the opportunity for lots of hands-on interaction with the strokable attractions (Reptiles for today !)

Overall it could do with sprucing itself up and the signage, but I have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

Thank you for your comments we are pleased you were pleasantly surprised by what you saw here. We also thank you for your comments regarding the signs as after a wonderfully sunny summer they did fade and look tatty however they have already started being replaced ready for this next season. We were very pleased to meet you

We visited Wingz today as a special treat for my mum's 82nd birthday. Although the sanctuary is officially closed at this time of the year they opened especially so that we could take mum for a meerkat experience which was a total surprise for her. Mum is a big meerkat fan! I believe there are various open days during the winter months which is well worth supporting. We have never visited before but were treated like old friends by the owners. The little gift shop was very reasonably priced, there is a coffee shop but we were informed this wouldn't be opened although we did have coffee made for us. What a fab job they do and deserve more recognition and help. The animals and birds are obviously well loved and cared for. Some of the stories behind these animals and birds were sad. Its good that there are people to take in and care for them.

My grandchildren like Wingz. It isn't a 'swep-up' attraction, in fact it's now a bit scruffy compared with when it opened a few years ago. They run on an absolute shoestring & the animals must cost a fortune to feed. We admire their fortitude & dedication & like to support local enterprise when we can. One of their problems (which I share living locally) is that weeds GROW here - it's a constant battle with strimmer etc & that needs staff & time.
Realistically you can see it all in an hour but the grandchildren will spend as much time as we allow, watching & feeding the meerkats - an endless fascination.
There is a play area for younger children, picnic table, a room for educational visits & the inevitable sales of nick-knacks.
We usually take advantage of the 'children go free' vouchers that appear periodically in the local paper to make it a bit cheaper.
Perhaps they should consider a 'friends' scheme to encourage locals to go more often.
As for being the No 1 attraction in Par - well, Par isn't really a touristy destination (except for the train station!) & that's the way locals like it.
