“3 lovely weeks at Treloen”

We,ve had 3 weeks holiday at Treloen Holiday apartments this time, the weather was kind to us for the whole time, so wonderful views across the bay, blue skies and sea, from the apartments. We were able to sit out most days, sun brollys are available which was great.
The apartments as usual, were spotless, just what you need after a long journey!
Jerry the resident Robin joined us every day, hes very friendly, I got some great photos of him quite close up.
The fresh fish on the harbour is wonderful if you,re eating in. If we went into Mevagissey to eat, the Ship Inn is very good, a quaint pub with great choice of food.
On our 3rd week we sat out at night, about 9pm we saw a badger stroll along the lawn at the front of the apartments, very nervous animal, but it was brilliant as we,ve never seen one before. What a lovely end to our wonderful relaxing holiday at Treloen.
We,ll be back next May.

We have just returned from an amazing and perfect week at the Treloen apartments in Mevagissey. We were lucky enough to have wonderful sun shine all week long which always makes for a good holiday but I have to say that these apartments are ideally situated and enjoy spectacular views. The walk into town is less than 10 mins and yes there is a hill but unless you have health problems make it part of your daily exercise to help walk of those delicious cream team and lovely fresh fish and chip suppers. Mevagissey is indeed narrow as is most of Cornwall and Devon - but hey this is part of its charm surely and not to be viewed as a negative. We took our car through Mevagissey most days and found fellow drivers to be courteous and careful so its really not a problem unless you are a nervous or very inexperienced driver. The apartments are fully equipped, very clean and has everything you will need (central heating in August would not normally be a requirement admittedly) with the added bonus of a patio/balcony overlooking the sea where we enjoyed breakfast and early evening drinks. I appreciate that everyone will have their own expectations and experience and rightly so but the last review I feel gives an unfair overview of Treloen - everything regarding bedding, heating, laundry room, and electricity meter is on their website so there is no justification for misunderstanding if these things are important to you make sure you check them out before you book! There are many fantastic places to eat in Mevagissey - the Fountain Inn, Salamander, Blue and the great fish and chip shops are just a few that are definitely worth a try and some great days out - the ferry to Fowey was a great day as was our visit to the mimack theatre and if you are interested in beautiful gardens you will be spoilt for choice. However if you just want to chill out relaxing, reading and taking in the amazing views the apartments get a straight 10 - and if you want to stay in a cook fresh fish caught that day swilled down with a lovely glass of prosecco then this is the place to be. My husband and I are lucky enough to be very well travelled and have stayed at the best such as Raffles in Singapore and the Mandarin Oriental - nevertheless the Treloen apartments have a location and charm all of their own and represent amazing value for money - we for sure will be back as soon as possible.

Having read a selection of previous reviews, I feel rather guilty in daring to say anything negative about the Treloen Apartments but I do think it's important to give factual information to other travellers about our stay.

With regards to location - the apartments are ideally situated at a clifftop location with beautiful uninterrupted sea views. Mevagissey harbour is only a 10 minute walk away but be prepared for a steep uphill climb on your return trip! I would strongly recommend NOT taking your car down into the village as the roads are extremely narrow and on the whole, unable to accommodate 2 oncoming vehicles. There is an alternative route to reach the apartments avoiding the village, however this involves an approximate 5 mile detour on windy, country roads.

With regards to the standard of accommodation and facilities the apartments provide, I would describe this as basic yet adequate. Having previously stayed in similarly described and priced apartments abroad, I couldn't help but feel slightly disappointed in comparison. We stayed in Apartment No.7 (ground floor) which was certainly compact and bijoux. The accomodation comprised of a livingroom/kitchenette, bedroom and shower-room. The general decor was a bit dated and we were somewhat disappointed to learn that central heating was provided only communally to all the apartments and was controlled by the owners. It was not turned on during our stay and as someone who is perpetually cold, I had to rely on an electric convector heater. We also discovered that we had to feed £1 coins into an old style electric meter before we could get power. While this did not prove particularly expensive (about £4 for the week) it vexed us that this was an additional charge that could and should have been accounted for in the price of the apartment. This is after all 2012! We had to plan in advance for Hot water as it was only available through the immersion heater.

In terms of kitchen equipment we were sparcely provided with 2 cups and saucers, 2 plates, 2 bowls and 2 mugs, albeit there was plenty cutlery etc. Barely adequate for a couple.

The television provided was small and WIFI coverage non-existant.

We flew into Cornwall and were trying to be careful with our luggage, so we went to the extra cost of hiring bed linen for our stay. However, we had no option but to bring bath/hand towels and also tea towels. Again,we have stayed at similarly priced accomodation at home and abroad where those things were automatically provided and included in the cost of your holiday..

The website states that washing/drying facilities are provided. The "laundrette" referred to is actually a single washing machine and tumble drier located in a walk in cupboard and was always in constant use during our stay owing to other guests using it. This proved problematic for us as we were flying abroad immediately after our Cornwall stay and had not brought a lot of clothes with us. The drying area was a clothes line strung out at the rear of the apartments in a dark corridor which probably never saw the light of day.

In summary - I do not mean this review to deter other guests in any shape or form from staying at the Treloen Apartments. Indeed, we would ourselves be happy to stay here again but would be more realistic in our expectations the next time. My advice to the owners would be that they should not rely solely on the breathtaking views as the selling point drawing customers to their apartments. Greater attention to detail and some modernisation is required should they wish to continue to compete in the market.

All in all however we had a wonderful holiday touring round a beautiful part of the world and with Mevagissey as an ideal base

In response:
Re the road, we always advise our guests to drive round the first time and then walk down so they can assess it for themselves. We always drive through but we are used to it and know the places to pull in or give way. If you have trouble reversing a car then it is best to drive round. And yes, this is Cornwall, we don’t have motorways. When walking down to the village there is a park you can cut through to get off the road, with seats to stop at and admire the view.
We offer the equivalent of 3 star tourist board accommodation, the apartments are equipped to this standard, and we price accordingly, so please don’t arrive expecting 5 star. Our location and sea views are more than 5star, and our proximity to Mevagissey, with parking on site is big plus, but we also like to think we offer good accommodation at a reasonable price, but do not try and pretend it is 5 star.
We don’t provide central heating in August. The immersion heaters take 10 -15 minutes to heat up, the showers are instant hot water. The immersion heaters are thermostatically controlled so you can leave them on if you don’t want to wait – they are very efficient and don’t use much power. On average the electric meters use £4 per week in the one bedroom apartments – this has not been changed for several years but encourages our guests to realise how important it is to switch off lights and appliances when they are not needed as they are now financially responsible for their energy usage. It also enables us to keep our prices down. Oil central heating is included without charge out of season.
As stated on our website, Wifi is available at a room off Reception and in the car park at no additional charge. We don’t advertise it as available in the apartments - however Apts 9, 10, 11 and 12 can pick it up, some others can as well but not guaranteed. We may be able to improve on this for 2013.
We offer a linen hire service which does not include towels, but you only have to ask if this is a problem due to flying etc. Re the launderette area, I have no idea what this person means by a walk in cupboard. The laundry room has a commercial washing machine which takes 30 minutes to do a wash (far superior to a domestic machine in my experience), commercial tumble dryer, ironing facilities, there are also books, magazines and stacks of tourist information leaflets. Due to the quickness of the machine I’ve never known of a problem of having to wait long to use it. The washing line isn’t in an ideal place but does see the light of day! There is a local by-law prohibiting hanging out washing on the coastline, and this is the best we can do – most apartment blocks probably wouldn’t have any washing line. There is of course the tumble dryer.
So please do come and stay at Treloen but if you want 5star then it’s probably best to book and pay more somewhere else. We have managed to successfully compete in the market for more than 30years and are often fully booked when others are struggling - a big thank you to all our many wonderful guests who return year after year.

Just returned from a great week at the Treloen apartments, the site is kept immaculately clean, the apartment (No.1) we stayed in was perfect. The views are fantastic, sitting outside morning and evening enjoying the great views, each apartment has plenty of garden chairs and a table, there are also benches overlooking the great views. The owners are very nice, greeting you on arrival and showing you around. Never had a problem parking but the spaces are a little tight in the main car park, but to be able to park on site in this part of the country is a bonus, just reverse in if you have a bigger car, or there is parking across the road and when we were there some people had a camper van which the owners put cones out so they could park there. Our son and gf decided they wanted to join us for 2 nights and the owners were very accommodating and provided additional parking for him. Downside which are nothing to do with the apartments is the small street to get up the road, if the sun is out come 11am the small street is packed with us tourists and a pain to negotiate, but there is a 5 mile alternative route, which is ok. Mevagissey is beautiful town, plenty to do and see, and the Treloen apartments are a great base.

To draw back the curtains, open the patio door inhale the fresh morning sea air whilst admiring the stunning views from the apartment is the main ingredient for the perfect holiday, that is what you get. We have just spent 2 brilliant weeks in apartment 7 which you could not fault, it was very comfortable and every thing you need is there, we will be going back hopefully next year. The owners like all the Cornish people are extremely polite and friendly. Mevagissey is a wonderful place to stay and is very central in Cornwall for touring the most picturesque part of our isle. ignore the bad reviews as there is always someone who is not happy unless the have got something to moan about. These are brilliant apartments in a superb location that gave us a holiday we wont forget.Thank You Liz and Clint

Just returned from our third visit to Treloen, despite the terrible weather we had a lovely holiday again. It was perfect on the one sunny afternoon we had just to sit and enjoy the stunning views from the apartments, I'd not want to be anywhere else in the world when the sun shines!

The apartments are great, modern, clean and tidy with everything you could need. The private patios and balconies really make Treloen stand out from anywhere else. The owners are warm and friendly and always welcoming.

We seemed to make friends with a gorgeous little robin who came to visit the balcony each morning, taking bread from our hands and rewarding us with a happy little song.

Treloen is a perfect base for exploring Cornwall, Mevagissey is only a short walk away (down quite a steep hill), and is a lovely traditional fishing village. We loved just soaking up the atmosphere and relaxing by the harbour in the evenings.

Would recommend for sure, and we hope to be back soon.

Room Tip: Stayed this time in apt 4, apt 7 last time - both good.

I have just returned from my stay at treloen holiday apartments. The apartment was lovely and me and my partner had a lovely week. The apartment was clean and tidy and had everything that we needed for a pleasant stay. The owner came to greet us from the house, despite our late arrival (the traffic on the M5 was unreal) and the pouring rain. He took us straight to the apartment, gave us a quick tour and left us to get on with it. It could have been our own apartment. We had a lovely stay. the electric meter only used £3 for the whole week (we only used the oven twice and made sure we didn't leave anything switched on when we went out). Families with children would probably require more but none the less, £3 is extremely reasonable I thought. The apartment is located an ideal distance from Mevagissey.
My only critism is the building work that is going on at the moment. We arrived to find that we were pushed to find a space. The building work seems to have taken over half of the car parking spaces. The owners had also parked their rather large boat and a skip in the car park which we calculated took about 3 spaces out of use. For people staying in apartment 12, their view out over the car park was obstructed by the boat. Also the WiFi was not working. My partner had to go and sit in the car to get signal. We could not pick up any signal anywhere in our apartment. I'm not sure if this is due to the building work. I thought the taking over of the carpark was ill thought out and infuriating. If we came back to the apartment anytime after 6 we struggled to park. Move the boat and the skip!!!!!

As the owners, we would just like to clarify that each apartment has a parking space in our car park, and there is no reason why there should be a problem with finding a space – indeed we are not aware there has ever been an issue, and we are only across the road if there is any problem. We are extremely fortunate to have our own parking on the premises – a rarity in Mevagissey – most self catering have to use the public car parks. If you are bringing a 2nd car please advise in advance and we will do our best to accommodate you. The skip referred to has nothing to do with Treloen – it is being hired by one of our neighbours and is sitting in their own parking spaces in the car park – it is not taking up any of the Treloen spaces. The boat is now in the harbour, but again, was not taking up a space allocated to the apartments. The wifi does work in some apartments better than others, but is available in the car park or at Reception, as stated in the information. (There is no charge for the wifi). I hope this information is helpful and clarifies any issues.
