Although a nice house and good location, we're a bit surprised by the 5 star reviews. A pleasant house with amenities we'd expect and insist on - wifi, dishwasher, washing machine etc. But we've stayed in some amazing places including Canada (where an incredible log cabin with it's own lake and boats cost us the same amount!). And a 3 bedroom villa with it's own swimming pool near Barcelona cost us the same 2 years ago. Sooo ....the reviews I read made me expect sheer luxury and it really isn't. Nothing to complain about but......
Spacious and well equipped cottage with lovely garden. The personal touches gave it a homely feel. Really appreciated the starter pack of tea, coffee, milk and biscuits.
We loved the cottage...comfortable, well furnished, clean and everything we needed. Just a short stroll for evening meals and drinks, and then home to quiet cottage for sleeping. Mevagissey is a beautiful Cornish harbour town...we really enjoyed the museum & history of the village. Good location for exploring rest of Cornwall, but nice coming 'home' to Mevagissey...great choice of pubs, restaurants and cafes at the end of the day. Would definitely love to visit and stay in this cottage again. Thank you.
I’ll start with this opener; we love Mevagissey, but accommodation can be a bit hit and miss.
For us, some of it is extremely chintzy and in need of a serious revamp, looking remarkably reminiscent of the finest of the 1950s inside. Pricing never reflects this though, so presumably the owners don’t feel the need to invest, as their property lets regardless.
Some of the cottages we’ve stayed in have been horrendously dirty, and by dirty, I mean filthy. When you can write your name in the dust (literally) and discover human excrement on the bathroom wall (I kid ye not), then you know your holiday isn’t off to a good start.
And some are, for us, just not well located. We need a parking space at the cottage and we’d rather it was on the St. Austell side of town, because that makes it easier for us to get to. Most of these lovely Cornish towns and villages were designed for horses and carts, not the volume of traffic that tries to get round these days, so some of the holiday lets, lovely though they may be, can be an absolute pain to get to.
So, where does The Cottage on Church Lane fit into all this? Well, for want of a better description, perfectly.
It’s on the right side of town; really, really, really easy to get to by car and all but a five minute stroll to the harbour. We also found it to be utterly lovely, spotlessly clean, welcoming, well equipped and, to be honest, just more like a home than a holiday let. The proximity to town is pretty much perfect, because it’s far enough away to be quiet (none of those pesky tourists walking past!) but close enough to easily be able to walk into town, or have a wander round some of those narrow little paths that duck and weave through Meva, just to see where they go.
Everything you need is here (probably) including, in no order of importance, decent speed internet, Bluetooth on the hi-fi (stream music to your heart’s content), Apple TV boxes on both TVs in the house (ideal if you want to use a NetFlix account or similar whilst you’re away), proper central heating (not those awful night storage heaters), a log burner (and a starter pack, although the Meva News in the town and the garage at Pentewen Sands sell bags of logs and kindling), as well as lots of books, DVDs, games and a Playstation 2 for late nights or maybe those days that aren’t quite so good.
I really can’t emphasise enough just how well equipped, clean and welcoming this cottage is. In fact, it’s arguably the best holiday let we’ve found in Meva’ to date and, more generally speaking, the one that seems to have had the most thought, care and attention invested in it. My only regret is that if it gets too popular, which it deserves to, then we may struggle to get booked in again in the future.
Really, really, really highly recommended.
The cottage is situated in the beautiful town of mevagissey, a small and unspoilt fishing port. If you enjoy the natural beauty of old England this is the place for you, and there are so many fantastic places to visit in Cornwall. The cottage is a good size and in excellent condition and décor. It was very clean and had everything we needed for a comfortable stay, not forgetting the big bonus that we could take our dog too.
This house, once we managed to actually find it, was simply lovely! It was spotlessly clean inside and the kitchen was extremely well equipped with plenty of worktop and cupboard space. The lounge/diner was very cosy with a lovely fireplace, quality furnishings and little nick-nacks and pictures and we cooked and ate in just to enjoy sitting in these surroundings. There's a neat garden which is fully dogproof thank goodness and it's very handy to reverse the car up to the back gate to unload luggage into the conservatory where we spent a few hours each day.
The house is a few minutes walk from the harbour with lots of restaurants and pubs, of which I can certainly recommend The Fountain for food! On the harbour is a fresh fish stall with a lovely friendly lady who'll fillet your fish for you and it has a very good selection of Cornish fish and shellfish. Mevagissey is a beautiful place and although this isn't the first time we've visited there, it's the first time we stayed in this house and it far surpassed previous rentals. If we return, this is where we'll stay!
What did I like least? Well, the house was hard to find, the dripping tap in the kitchen drove me nuts, the central heating thermostat was a bit tricky and the bed wasn't at all comfortable so we had backache every morning, but the bedding was good quality. A waste paper basket in the bathroom would be very handy too.
All considered though, it was a lovely house and we felt very much at home there.
