“Cornwall was never like this in my day”
Reviewed October 6, 2013 via mobile

My wife had never been to Cornwall, so as our local Southend airport's Easyjet flew to Newquay it was time to take a 9 day holiday.

I hadn't been since the 70's to Perran sands and the surrounding area. It was great to re visit.

Our stay at the Scarlet was our 3rd port of call after 3 nights at the Old Quay House in Fowey, Then 3 nights at The Boskeris in St Ives.

All hotels were marvellous but this one had to be the best.
.
The Scarlet is a splendid modern build hotel with glass & art everywhere with plenty of room for all. For such a big footprint the hotel only had 30 odd rooms which makes a refreshing change to cramming in rooms. You are definitely made to feel special.

We were in an indulgent room with all the mod cons and was roomy and had great views of the Morgan Porth bay which is beautiful. If anything the room was too big and had what was effectively a dance floor between the end of the bed and the wall with the TV. The bed was really comfortable with views to die for.

There was a small but useful balcony and on the occasional moments of sunshine we used this and once again just spent time watching the tide rush up and down the beach.
We ate in the hotel on two evenings and went for a super lobster fix in Newquay's old Boatyard.

The hotel operates an eat anywhere anytime system which was very effective, lunching in one of the many lounges of relaxation areas.

The rooms did not have tea or coffee making facilities in the room but did have speedy room service with fresh tea or coffee delivered with just a call to reception, wonderful.

Evening meals were very very good. My wife and I have eaten in some of best hotels and reataraunts in the world but one of our deserts on the second meal was outstanding. It was a sharing meal of white chocolate moose with raspberries honeycomb and banana ice cream. 10/10 magnificent.

The service in the Restaraunt was very good with attentive well versed staff. On both evening meals we had the recommended accompanying wines. These were all of superb quality and were chosen by the hotels wine manageress. She was also very approachable and informative about her choices.

I've just seen that the Spa was highly rated and was voted number 1 in the Sunday times, we can vouch for this.

We had pre booked a couples Spa break and shared a 4 hour session involving relaxation techniques a body scrub and a brilliant massage. Our two ladies were absolutely brilliant and made it a lovely experience.

The next day we had a hot tub experience which was novel whilst drinking cocktails. Heaven.

I do have one negative, I do agree with other comments in that I believe there should be a formal reception. I did not like the feeling of being spied on and as a customer you don't know if someone is coming or not.

However, all in all, a wonderful break in a top class hotel. Will be back,

Highly recommend

Earlier this month I had my second stay at The Scarlet - not often do I go to the same place twice in fear that it will never live up to the first experience, but I needn't of worried about that, it's quite possible that my second visit was even more magical! What's not to like - amazing views from every room in the hotel, right on the cliffs of Mawgan Porth beach on the costal path, each window is like a canvas where the amazing landscape constantly changes before your eyes. There's something for everyone, I've visited with my husband, and more recently with a friend - walking, surfing, sitting or lounging in the cliff gardens on a bean bag or relaxing in the spa! Rooms are exceptionally comfortable and modern and everything in the hotel has a relaxed yet contemporary feel. The spa facilities, cliff top hot tubs and sensational treatments are divine! (Voya Facial highly recommended) The restaurant is exceptional with a daily changing menu, wine selections vast, this is a place where you can unwind and really spoil yourself - and I love the anywhere any time menu! It's that ethos of customer service that comes through in every aspect of the hotel and the service experience - whatever you need, when you need it, how you want it ... while you are there you feel really taken care of by friendly, warm, genuine and down to earth staff, who couldn't do more for you. I have already booked our third visit for after the New Year!! Congratulations and thank you to all at The Scarlett!

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms, give access straight out into the garden & cliffs ...

We booked a luxury 4 night stay at the Scarlet in late September and it certainly lived up to our expectations. We arrived tired and stressed from city life and left truly refreshed!! A child free haven in a beautiful location overlooking Mawgan Porth Bay.

We stayed in a 'just right' room which lived up to its name, albeit our room (Room 16) overlooked the green sedum roof and had a restricted view of the bay. I couldn't really fault the view but if you want a clear view of the beach, you might want to request a top floor room.

We used all the facilities provided - the hot tub out in the garden overlooking the bay (an extra charge), the spa, library with complimentary pool table and the restaurant. Being a couple with both a meat eater and vegetarian, it was good to see a separate vegetarian menu with plenty of choice, and the ability to pick and choose between the two menus, which changed daily. The breakfast menu also changed daily and is all table service. The food was excellent.

And it was great to see hotel staff, mostly employed from the local area, who were some of the friendliest hotel staff we had come across and really seemed to enjoy working there. Service was excellent throughout the stay with only a couple of very minor glitches. We even got sorted out with wet suits and boards and had our first attempt at body boarding in the sea which is only a short stroll away down through the hotel grounds.

And all this was achieved in a purpose built sustainably designed hotel which had so many eco-features that you could read all about them in the hotel library!! It meant you really could enjoy yourself whilst having a eco-friendly holiday stay in the UK. OK, so its not the cheapest place to stay and would probably only be considered as a very special treat. But it filled that role perfectly and we hope to return for a second trip once we've saved up the money!

What a find! Sitting on the Retreat Terrace having lunch, soaking up the sunshine with our little dog beside us was the highlight of our holiday. The service was impeccable, the view was stunning and the memory will linger long in our minds.

On our second visit to this lovely spa hotel, we stayed 3 nights and ate on a Saturday night. The bedrooms are designed to exploit the wonderful view of the Morgan Pawth beach and you hear the ocean if you open the large french windows - amazingly relaxing :)
Service is generally excellent and deliberately laid back, and the spa/health side of this hotel is not all hairshirt worthiness, but luxurious pampering (and why not!).
The really minor niggles that reduce the 5 points to 4 (prepare yourself for the first world horror!) were:
- tea arrived in the room with a lovely milk jug (but it was empty)
- we ordered a picnic for the beach; an advertised service that I guess not many guests used because it took a long time to arrive, was delivered to the wrong location (I was told to wait in reception and it went to the room) and then came with no forks or napkins
- food in the restaurant is generally good, but doesn't live up to the current quality of surrounding eateries (boosted by Oliver, Stein and Outlaw's nearby presence) - a pannacotta billed as having PX sherry seemed clearly to have none on it (someone forgot?)
Having said that, when some inconsiderate other guests stole our ordered taxi, a staff member (Sebastian) who was ending his shift gave us a lift to the restaurant in his own car (brilliant service!!).
Would definitely stay again!

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms have a lovely manicured grass route to the beach.

the location and the service were excellent and the food was surprisingly good, nothing to fault it and I was tempted to give it 5 stars but at the price, I guess I would expect it t be as good as it was so 4 stars is fairer as it is very good vfm but not surprisingly so.
Warning, if the day is sunny and hot, leave the windows open as the eco-friendly lack of air con means you need to do that to stay cool. A canopy or an overhang would make the rooms cooler. The high tech architect clearly has not been to the tropics to see how simple devices can make a building cool in the hot weather

Room Tip: could do with a gym

What a lovely review, thank you so much for taking the time to post it, and it is a good tip to keep the big patios doors open so the lovely sea breezes can come in and naturally cool the rooms.

Regrettably only a 1-night stay as this hotel is fabulous. The architecture and interior design are both very attractive and the views spectacular. We stayed in a 'Just Right' room which was clean, modern and fitted with high quality furnishings. The sea views from the balcony (and bed!) are wonderful. There is a generous amount of space provided for communal areas including many terraces and outdoor areas to savour the views. The staff deserve mention as they are very professional, young and friendly - we felt very relaxed here. My wife trod on a weaver fish on the beach and she was looked after by a very helpful member of staff who provided a bowl of hot water (a very tasteful hand-hammered copper bow, by the way!) and numerous towels. He could not have been more helpful. Thank you to The Scarlet for a memorable short-break.
