“Absolutely outstanding”
Reviewed September 3, 2013

This is a truly outstanding hotel in a wonderful location with excellent service and very good food.
Perhaps I haven't had the advantages of trip a and I haven't visited Borgo Santo something in Tuscany but I was very pleased with my stay here and I fully intend to return as soon as possible.
We had a very short wait at reception and it was very pleasant to have someone take charge of the luggage and show us round the hotel before going to the room.
We had one of the smaller cheaper rooms but it had a wonderful view and I enjoyed watching the sun going down into the sea in the restaurant. The breakfast was excellent and cooked to order.
As I said before I am looking forward to the next visit.

We stayed only two nights - wish it was a lot more as this hotel is everything we look for when travelling.
Wonderful staff - made us feel so welcome. The room we had was super. Plenty of space and of course, the amazing view. Breakfast was really good, and dinner was one of the best we have had in the UK. Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. We are very used to open plan living, but it might be a little outré for some.

Spent the day here for my partners birthday, absolutely beautiful hotel spa. Views and surroundings are stunning, the staff are great. The rooms and facilities in the spa are so relaxing, we felt free to roam the grounds inbetween our appointments, and the staff just come and find you when they need you. Love the decor and the stylish interior, really light and open. Everything smells great and all the various differnt seating/bean bags and loungers etc are so comfortable. We were here on a hot weekend in august and it wasn't at all crowded, really peaceful. The only thing that wasnt perfect was the lunch, which could have easily been better, perhaps simplified a bit. Was perfectly edible though. P.s. dont miss the cliff side hot tubs!

There are some good elements to the Scarlet, but it is somewhat off-putting being made to feel that you should be grateful for them, which is unfortunately what it feels like at this self styled eco retreat on the north Cornish coast.

Never generally being inclined to agree with the sentiments of The Daily Mail, we do in this instance have to concur with its review of The Scarlet and the overriding theme that the hotel lacks from competition and therefore gets away with far more than it deserves.

There is an air of self-congratulation about that place which in some respects may be justified and in some instances not so much, however it’s never a good trait and doesn’t put you at ease. Despite being undoubtedly pleasant, The Scarlet is way off the standards of a world-class hotel or resort, despite giving the impression that is right up there. There is nothing inherently wrong with the service, yet it is standard and as you would expect as a minimum, not outstanding. And as much can be said for the hotel itself – there is nothing wrong with it, other than the expectation that it puts upon itself and the fact that can only lead to disappointment, rather than pleasant surprise.

The first impressions aren’t great as you enter the The Scarlet in a built up residential area, rather than the single track leading to a hidden, sunken building surrounded by poetic cliff top fields that you may have a picture of in your head. The view to the front of the hotel is certainly beautiful, looking across a typical yet stunning Cornish bay and out across the Atlantic Ocean. Just don’t look back. Or left, or right. The welcome that the sisters have tried to hard to create ‘ as if you were entering someone’s home’ also fails to deliver when you are left waiting for more than ten minutes.

The rooms are average to say the least, and where the over pricing of The Scarlet really starts to show. Again, there is nothing wrong with them per se, and if you were paying £120 per night, rather than £320+ there would be little to grumble about other than the taste factor. However, when you compare the price with similarly priced hotels either in the UK or in other parts of the world there leaves a lot to be desired. From Babington House in Somerset, to Borgo Santo Pietro in Tuscany, even stalwarts like the Beverly Wilshire in LA and beyond, there is an absolute world of difference for the price. A standout strange feature of the room was where the bathroom was situated – it felt as though we were washing in the kitchenette of a bedsit/self-contained chalet.

After a long day of driving there was disappointment with the food availability, which was very limited at ‘non-regular’ meal times. Taking the advice of the barman, we tried the next door hotel when there was nothing suitable on offer for us, the sister hotel to The Scarlet – rather like a school building outside of term time, which served pretty basic food in an environment suitable for some, fair enough, but not for Scarlet guests, surely. There is also an all night menu, and after being out relatively late (gone 11pm) and not yet having had a decent meal, we ordered off the evening menu, only to be told by the girl who was manning the night shift and answering phones that she couldn’t cook most things on the menu. Not her fault surely, but again, not the standards of a luxury hotel. The breakfast again, was disappointing… trying hard but turning out average.

Other points, such as having to walk through the spa reception to get to the rooms, paying for the privilege of using a hot tub… not major failures, but little irritants. In summary, The Scarlet is not a bad proposition, but it is just not up to the standards it elevates itself to. There are a few too many traits from the old British hotel world, and rather a lot of delusions of grandeur.

Lots of people love it, so say the reviews and the guest book full of superlatives. Good for them. We may be missing something, or maybe they are. Either way, there’s room for better, for The Scarlet, and for some competition perhaps.

My wife and I stayed here recently to celebrate our second wedding anniversary and to revisit some the places we visited on our honeymoon in Cornwall. We had seen the Scarlet when passing two years previous and vowed to stay there some time.

The hotel is fantastic. A great combination of attentive and friendly staff, relaxed atmosphere, stunning views, wonderful decor and original artwork and most importantly - a very good nights sleep in comfortable and stylish surroundings. I don't know how they do it, but even on a bank holiday with the hotel full, we could always find somewhere to relax in private.

Our room was one of the lowest in cost as we stretching our budget a little bit to stay there, but the quality of the room and furnishings, the sea view, the beautiful open plan bathroom with bath and rain shower was such that we could not have asked for more. I can only assume the suites are some sort of transcendent heaven-like experience.

We opted for a couples spa journey at the in-house spa. We started with a consultation with a spa therapist before spending half an hour in the log-fired cliff top hot tub. We then spent a while in the relaxation room and had a fresh fruit snack and ice water. Shortly after we were guided to the tented massage room for couples and we had individual full body massages. The journey ended with a bathing ritual and champagne. Unforgettable and the most relaxing and rejuvenating day I can remember.

We made good use of the outdoor and indoor pools throughout our stay, usually we were on our own, again amazing considering it was August bank holiday. We also spent quite a bit of time relaxing on the sun terrace and enjoying the 'anytime anywhere' food and drinks menu. This is great when you don't want to be confined to eating in the restaurant. Breakfasts were also wonderful. Each day there was a different menu, fresh fruit smoothies, granola, muesli and some interesting cooked options too. On arrival every morning, there is a bottle of freshly pressed apple juice on the table, a really nice touch I felt.

This is by far the best hotel experience we have had in the UK. The only comparable experiences have been in SE Asia. Someone is working very hard at this hotel to ensure 100% consistency in quality of service, food, drink and accommodation. We will be back!

Room Tip: We took the lowest price option and had everything we needed. I'm not sure I would pay a premium...

The views, the rooms, the service, the spa, the treatments, the food and even the guests were nothing short of what you would hope for at this truly inspired hotel. This stunning hotel overlooking the Atlantic is the creation of three women. A sanctuary in a crazy world. We will return again and again. Thank you.

Room Tip: You can't go wrong. All rooms have a view of the Atlantic, all rooms are spacious and the hotel...

Love the location. Our indulgent room was wonderful; great views over the hotel gardens and beach. The two sunsets we saw from the restaurant were fabulous. We loved being able to have our breakfasts in our room. The outdoor pool is sublime as is the hot tub experience with champagne. We had a 'blip' with our first dinner but this was dealt with very proactively and graciously by the food and beverage manager. However, we ate at the Treby Arms the next night when we were in Plymouth when visiting my parents and this was an excellent meal for the same price. I think that the scarlet is a fabulous hotel with lovely, professional staff; the management of the hotel needs to have a more hands on operational approach with a better strategic overview. For example, when we arrived the valet parking sign was out, so we pulled in, the sign was removed by a member of staff who then disappeared inside without any explanation and we sat like idiots waiting....... Until my husband went inside to ask what was happening and his response was met with 'Amazing!' Also, when asked for our names on check-in, their response was "No problem." Wasn't sure how my surname could be a problem!! This made the lauded friendly approach somewhat facile. The staff are really polite, professional and friendly, but they could probably do without the management led idea of formality that seems to be expected here. There is a real dichotomy between the young, enthusiastic staff who are expected to do the servile thing of a 4* hotel which we don't really want at a hotel in which we can wander around in our robes all the time! We love the relaxed vibe of the continental hotels that we stay in: the staff don't need to adopt a lesser persona..... It makes us feel much more comfortable when they don't ....

Would we return? Depends on the vision and values promulgated by the senior management team. What we read in the various blurbs is not actually realised in this hotel. However, well done to the day to day staff.

Thank you for posting a review of your stay and it was good to read that you loved the hotel, hot tub sunsets and pools. I wanted to apologise for your Valet parking experience, we introduced valet parking as a trial this summer, as our car park does experience pressure points, but what you experienced was not what we were intending, in any way, as we recognise how important it is to give a warm welcome to all our guests.
We recruit and train our teams to offer a friendly, genuine and unobtrusively responsive service at all times. If you have any time to discuss your stay I would love to call and investigate further why this was not what you experienced.
