The Scarlet Hotel in Mawgan Porth, Cornwall, is outstanding. If you want to go to a formal, stuffy hotel with staff only saying “yes sir” or “no sir” with a false grin on their faces, then don’t go to the Scarlet. Another excellent element of the hotel is that it is child free which, may be contentious for some but, is brilliant for the rest of us.
There is no reception desk, the staff come out and greet you and tell you everything you need to know.
The Scarlet is a relaxed place set up to slow you down. The staff and the service they provide is excellent, friendly and they cannot do enough for you.
The hotel is beautifully quirky with unusual furniture and pieces of art on show some of which are for sale.
The rooms are very comfortable and in fact the Scarlet is the only hotel that has comfortable pillows; and I have stayed in a few hotels.
The Scarlet hotel is on a steep hillside with beautiful views of the bay. I found myself sitting and watching; a thing we rarely do. It fascinated me to see the tide come in.
There is a very good spa that offers all sorts of treatments and it is well worth a visit.
The food at the hotel is very good. The restaurant staff and bar staff are friendly and will do everything possible to make the experience a good one.
How many hotels will you go to, that the general manager, Nicky, will come out to have a chat with you and make you feel welcome and ensure that your needs are looked after. I have a friend who has mobility difficulties who I want to bring down to the Scarlet. Nicky took us to see one of the rooms that will meet the needs of anyone with disabilities and mobility difficulties and definitely my friend.
I cannot thank all of the staff enough for a relaxing and tranquil stay. We are going back at Christmas to enjoy the Scarlet again.
PS. The Scarlet is dog friendly

Everything was absolutely perfect - from the moment we booked (excellent help received over the phone in selecting a suitable room) to the moment we left. The room was beautiful with stunning, uninterrupted views over the bay. The food was amazing; we had the 3 course dinner on both nights which I would highly recommend. Good choice of local fresh ingredients and a top quality chef.

Don’t miss the hot tubs and make sure you book in advance as they are really popular. People have commented on the price in other reviews, but we thought it was quite reasonable and worth the money (currently £15 for 30 minutes). The views over the bay are amazing whilst relaxing in the tub. We also booked the Rhassoul treatment which was good fun and left us feeling invigorated.

The outdoor pool is cold but well worth swimming in. It is one of a kind and shouldn’t be missed.

The eco aspect is well balanced and not overbearing. The service and atmosphere is laid back, and whilst it is clearly a top quality hotel, it is not at all pretentious.

2 days of pure relaxation and it felt like a week - we are already planning for our next stay and cannot wait!

We came here first in 2010 as a surprise treat for me from my husband, for our 25th wedding anniversary. We had room 1, which was superb, and it truly felt like another honeymoon; we stayed from Monday to Thursday and both felt as though we'd had a month off from life.

We saved up for 3 years to afford to come back again, and this time we had room 3, which was no less spectacular, just a little more compact. We treated ourselves to a slightly longer stay; this time Monday to Friday.

Everything was wonderful! We learned from our first stay that we needed to book treatments in advance - although we had booked a journey for ourselves, everything else was already fully booked when we arrived the first time. I went from happily browsing the Spa treatments and trying to book, only to find I could only have one massage on the last day, which was so disappointing.

This time we booked -

A hot tub for our first afternoon, and dinner in the restaurant in the evening.

We booked our Rhassoul Journey for the Tuesday and had also booked dinner at the Fire restaurant at the bottom of the hill, both of which were lovely.

We then both had massages on the Wednesday morning; I had a head and neck massage and my husband had a leg massage. We took the bus into Padstow in the afternoon and thought about having fish and chips on the beach in the evening, but after a cream tea in Padstow we really weren't all that hungry - so we were naughty and requested tea in our room later that evening, expecting tiny posh sandwiches with the crusts taken off but were bowled over by the delicious doorsteps that arrived!! We indulged in fantastic sandwiches, olives, nuts, Cornish crisps, fresh fruit and home-made biscuits with a bottle of cider for me and a bottle of lager for my husband, absolute bliss!

On Thursday, we both had facials, mine an anti-aging one and his just a general one. We had snapped photos of ourselves before and afterwards, and the staff snapped us both during our treatments, hilarious photos to put in a frame I think! Lovely memories to keep! Dinner in the restaurant again in the evening, it's worth mentioning that both times we ate there we decided on the sharing courses, and all four of them were just delicious. Really the chef is a treasure!

We went home on the Friday, totally relaxed and feeling like we'd been there forever.

Saving hard again now for a third visit!! Maybe we'll have an even higher numbered room next time; the drop from room 1 to room 3 was painless, and the less expensive rooms look just as good, maybe we could add an extra day again????

Room Tip: Don't expect anything - then what you find is pure bliss!

Superb friendly and welcoming service, fantastic position, beautiful garden room, excellent spa and indoor swimming pool. The vegetarian dinner was amazing produced by an obviously talented chef with a good taste palate. The wine list however even for a hotel of this quality was ridiculously overpriced.
Breakfast was very disappointing for any hotel never mind one at this price. One raw, one hard poached egg, one raw fried egg.
Although the room was a design delight, having a toilet without hand wash facilities could be a hygiene disaster and should be redressed.

It was good to read that you both (and your lovely dog!) had an enjoyable stay, overall, and I have passed on your comments to the Chef and he is working with his team on the issues you raised..

stayed at this hotel for one night only as part of a trip to Cornwall. the room was well designed and had some nice touches, if not the biggest room. really liked the complimentary tea and coffee on demand, we ordered this about 3 times and it arrived within 5 minutes or less. indoor pool was a good size and well heated, I didn't try the outdoor one. the restaurant was first class with a great choice of fresh fish dishes and an extensive wine list. all the staff we interacted with were helpful and a pleasure to deal with. This is a hotel that has a clear idea of what it is and what it wants to be and all the staff seem to be on board with this. The only gripe I have in an otherwise great stay was the charge of £15.00 for 20 minutes in a outdoor hot tub that had a superb location but no bubbles. it was just literally a tub of hot water

We too had great expectations - which reality didn't quite live up to. It's a shame because the building is very attractive and the location superb.
But I agree with pretty much everything 'Gertrude40' has already posted... lots of small disappointments, which you simply shouldn't get in this price range.
Just feel I must mention the seagulls - which have taken up residence on the hotel roof garden ... if you are on the Sea Thrift floor, they are right outside your window and the noise can be deafening .... starting at about 4 in the morning.

Room Tip: We had the basic 'just right' room, as this was the only one available. It was okay - but...

I am sorry to read we did not live up to our normal high standards during your stay, and I wanted to apologise for the noisy Seagulls, our maintenance team have found a way of putting imitation hawk like birds on the roof which has stopped the gulls landing and screeching near our bedrooms! So now all you can hear from the bedrooms is the sound of the sea again.

Have just stayed for 4 nights at the Scarlet with my wife for a bit of a break from work, the kids, etc.
This hotel is wonderful. The room (we went for an "indulgent" room) was large and coolly stylish, with a beautiful view of the beach and surrounding cliffs (such views are ubiquitous in this hotel) and the staff hit precisely the right level of friendliness without being over-bearing.
The restaurant is excellent, with fresh local produce and an imaginative menu. We ate breakfast there every day and dinner twice and enjoyed beautifully prepared and presented food each time.
This is definitely a place to RELAX. It's not the most lively place and the service, for anyone in a hurry, would test one's patience. But if you're looking to chill and spoil yourself in beautiful, unstuffy surroundings, this place is hard to beat.

Thank you so much for writing such a lovely review of your relaxing break, The Scarlet and the views of the sea all around do have a way of slowing everyone down, so recharging really seems to work here!
