“In another world!”
Reviewed March 3, 2013 via mobile

We stayed in a sliver log cabin at Deerpark and managed to get 20% off are booking due to a special offer that was on at the time of booking. Very very good value!
Very clean cabin, and very spacious for just the two of us. The hot tub was amazing! Big enough for 4-5 adults. Water got cleaned everyday by a member of staff.
Staff was very helpful and they also managed to order us in some chicken fillets as they never had any in the shop. We played the famous duck race on Saturday morning and it was great fun - not just for kids!! We came 2nd in the race and won free bike hire for the whole weekend! Fabulous!
The only thing i found to be a little disappointing is that there is NOTHING near by - no local pubs or shop you can walk or bike ride to you have to drive!

We have stayed at their Forest of Dean cabins last year and loved it, but they in contrast, had been refurbished recently with new entertainment centres, better cooking facilities, seating etc, Cabin 40 in Cornwall is overdue some spending.

Easy check in and friendly staff, we stayed for a midweek break in a dog friendly cabin, spacious and warm (not easy to control heating mind you, sauna temperatures achieved one day!) but sadly overall - not perfect.

Told our Copper Beech was part upgraded to a Silver Birch (no extra cost to us) it now had a hot tub which was fantastic and much used. The rest of the cabin I was told, would be upgraded this Spring. The cooker for starters, had no markings on the dials (see pictures), not only making cooking challenging, but downright dangerous since the only way to know what any ring was doing was by hand. I raised this at reception next morning and a photocopied picture of the dials was provided and during the day, someone marked up the rings with pencil (again, see pictures).

Strangely, there is a full size dishwasher in the kitchen, strange because there is only 4 of anything provided - glasses, bowls, large and small plates, forks, knives, spoons etc. So, how you could make efficient use of a dishwasher is beyond me - back to the washing up bowl...

Don't get me wrong, it is good value and as a base to head out from, or even walk in the local woods, it's fine, but they need to sort details out. For example, one expensive extra (we didn't book this by the way) was having a local chef cook in your cabin - what he could create on the numberless cooker would have been almost worth the investment! Maybe the upgrade will sort the shortcomings, new sofas, better kitchen fitments, more crockery and cutlery, lights in bathrooms that work.

We will return, these cabins go 'top dollar' in season and term breaks so they need to address the errors, but location, staff and ambiance are excellent so sort the last bits and create a top class break destination.

We stayed at Deerpark February 2010 in cabin 9, then visited again February 2013 cabin 14. I really like Deerpark – nice setup – few cabins overlook others, most front the lake. I’d always go for a lakeside one. The staff are friendly – many of the faces from 2010 were still there in 2013: Stuart the manager, Martin the guide. The forest itself is quite small with perhaps 8 miles of footpaths and tracks at most – so a keen walker will find it restrictive. But for the average dog/child walker it is ideal. The valley is very sheltered so despite the strong winds over Cornwall for the first two days we were there, it was all quiet down at the cabins. The cabins get a lot of heavy use and we always find something missing or broken. I often find I’m reporting so many items that I must sound that I’m always complaining – but I’d still choose to go even with the problems. I’d recommend a cabin with a hot tub. It’s so relaxing: a clear winter’s night watching the stars, during the day watching the birds – they’re more noticeable when there are no leaves on the trees. The old mill has been converted to “the Retreat” since our previous visit in 2010 – combined reception, shop, bar and café. They’ve done a good job of the conversion. The shop has a good choice of items, you wouldn’t have to go shopping, though we’d arranged for a Tesco home delivery. There’s a good choice of items to eat. They will also deliver pizzas to the cabin. I recommend the chocolate one – though not as much chocolate as the Strathyre Forest Holiday pizzas! February is a great time to visit the area. Many of the tourist attractions are open and it is so quiet. You won’t meet other traffic on the narrow country lanes. I’d certainly recommend the visit to Polperro, only 10 minutes drive away. The coastal path between Polperro and Looe is one of the best stretches, though in 2013 a section was closed because of landslip. If you’re heading west then I’d recommend the detour to the ferry at Fowey. The coastal villages and small towns are real gems. Eden Project is worth a visit, as are the Lost Gardens of Heligan – even in winter. Look out for offers. We received a 20% off offer just days after we’d booked – would have saved us £120!

Room Tip: Golden oaks are worth the extra money - hot tub is SO relaxing. 6 bedded cabins are nicer than 4 bed...

Stayed in a pet friendly Cabin. Golden Oak cabin 42. Situated a short walk from reception yet far enough to be private. The cabin had it's own parking space which was very useful to load/unlaod. The cabin was clean and tidy upon arrival. A very sweet message of welcome was displayed in the scrable letters, lovely touch. The cabin was all it described itself as. Wonderful view from all the many windows. Peaceful without being too remote and definately felt homely. The cabin had two rooms downstairs a twin with separte shower and loo. A space to keepp walking boots, coats and dog equipment. A large kitchen and lounge. The sofa was enough for two however four adults might find it a squeeze. I would recommend taking a throw or fleece as it does get a liitle chilly untill the log warmer gets going. Once alight this does heat the cabin well. Be warned take enough wood, logs and fire lighters. You do get a starter kit but would woudn't make it through a night on this. The Morrisions near by and petrol station both sell logs as does the on site shop. The later being slightly more expensive. Upstairs a bedroom with double bed, the mattress has seen better days but still ok. The bedding was clean and decent. The bathroom with sunken bath to allow a wonderful view from the window to the forest was fab. The hot tub was not hot enough on the first night but was very much enjoyed day and night for the rest. This was serviced daily. Staff on site were lovely, very helpful and very dog friendly. The duck race Tues/sat was good fun for free (adults/kids and woofs). The quiz on weds eve is great to meet others and relax with a beer. Take the history walk with Zac and his owner who has a wonderful knowledge of teh forest and local history. The CrumpleHorn pub is one to be visited

Room Tip: Cabin 42 great location but not on the lake cabins 9, 10, 11 12 for the lake view.

Had a great time here 4th -8th of february, just me and my boyfriend. Got cabin 19 which was lovely, one of the nicest cabins, looking straight out onto the lake. It had a log burner, even though it was a silver birch, which was really good! We loved the hot tub. loved feeding the ducks and the birds. It was lovely to get away and just lounge around, a really relaxing break.

A lot of people are very critical on here, and I was actually quite offput by some of the reviews, But I think they are being rediculous, the cabins are clean, spacious, really good value for moeny and in the most gorgeous woodland setting. I would really reccomend it.

Room Tip: Cabin 19 lovely. I didnt bother booking a specific cabin, because I wasnt too bothered, but some of...

Just been back again, this time for a week, and it still wasn't long enough. The cabins are not pristine and new, but warm and cosy, and they merge beautifully into the scenery, which we like. The log burning stove, and hot tub on the balcony are just the icing on the cake. Part of the reason we go here is because there is no 'phone signal, and limited internet...we get away from the world totally, though can drive up the hill once a day to check messages if necessary, and can log on to computers and ipads in the bar area if we need to. The staff here are just perfect...couldn't be more cheerful or helpful, nothing is too much trouble. We will certainly be going back, just wondering if we can stretch to 10 days next time:)

Room Tip: Study the map and choose your cabin carefully depending on what is most important to you...it's...
