“Airday”

RNAS Culdrose Airfield Viewing Area
Reviewed August 16, 2013 via mobile

We visited this place when there was an open airday, it was a fantastic day out seeing all the aircrafts up close and you can talk to all the the guys and gals that operate these magnificent machines, there were plenty of loos dotted about the place and it didn't fail to deliver.
The flying display was fantastic. I can't praise this place enough. Well worth the money.

Been here a few times and it never disappoints.

Firstly there is the cafe. It's basic but wholesome and offers cream tea as well as hot food such as cheeseburger and chips. Prices are family oriented and good value, which is fairly exceptional for Cornwall in peak season. Service is by a set of very lovely ladies who aim to please.
From the cafe you get a panoramic view of the air station and can watch the Royal Navy do its stuff. Despite August being the 'quiet season' it was like Clapham Junction with Seakings, Merlins and Avengers zooming about at treetop height whilst you spread strawberry jam on a fresh scone -what's not to like?
The cafe is also a shop and it has a variety of stuff at pocket money prices for the kids as well as books and souvenirs for adults (and aviation nerds like myself).

The best part is the tour. I think it's about £11 for an adult but children are cheaper and there is a family ticket option which is very good value. For this you are taken around the base on an escorted tour via a coach. You get to see the helicopters and aircraft in closeup as well as see aspects of the station the public wouldn't normally see. Every trip is different depending on what can be seen at any given time and periodically you're allowed off the coach to visit say the fire station or a hangar with helicopters in it. The tour guides are always very knowledgeable and the most recent guide (Mary) was absolutely superb and keen to point out and explain anything of interest. She also has a raft of anecdotes and stories, many very amusing and it makes the visit a real treat. So much of the trip is a serendipity experience as it's a very active base with so much change happening.

A great visit for families as well as experienced aviation nerds. It's top of my list when visiting Cornwall.

The view was great. The cream tea while watching the activities even better. yum yum. I laughed when I over heard a lady asking the shop assistant 'When is the next air display?'
The assistant told her 'there is no display'
Lady 'I just caught the end of that one, so what time is the next?' Assistant 'There are no displays. That's the Royal Navy doing what they do'
Lady 'Can't you find out what's next?'
Assistant 'They don't tell us what they do, we are not part of the Airfield. We serve food and drinks, sell things to the public who visit here.'
Lady 'Huff tut' and walked out.
Some people !!!!!!!!!!1 lol lol

Viewing the aircraft is even better on the tour as you get to see them up close. The bus stops off at the various hangers and you can view the aircraft inside. This bit I really enjoyed.

We stopped off at the fire station and climbed on board a fire engine and had a good look inside. The children liked going in and out of them. During the time of our visit the firemen conducted an exercise in cutting up a car. The children did not find it that great and we spent quite a bit of time watching that in our limited tour time!

On one of the hangers the bus stopped by to have a look and as we did the engineers started closing the doors! They could have waited 5 mins!

I feel more input could have been given by the service personal but we didn't have much. Those that did like some of firemen did an excellent job. More input should have been given by aircrew. In summary a more systematic approach is needed on the tour.

Overall we still enjoyed it
