“Great surf food but something missing...”
Reviewed November 17, 2012

I came here with my partner in 2008 and we had a really nice meal then, which I would have given a 5 star rating, so we visited again this year on our return to Cornwall. I can't quite put my finger on it but something did seem different on our return. I think the menu may have been simplified, nothing in it really stood out as adventurous and there was a heavy focus on burgers. So we had burgers and they were really good, well presented and well portioned and the staff were very friendly and attentive (Somebody else has mentioned that their card was retained at the bar when they ordered? This sounds very odd and was definitely not the case on either of our visits).

Overall it was a nice experience but I really do think the menu could do with a bit of spicing up, as this restaurant is a way out into the sticks I imagine most people make a special trip to go there, so really the menu needs to reflect that a bit more.

I am sorry that you did not find our menu varied enough! Our burgers are hugely popular and thus form the backbone of the main menu, but our specials board is always eclectic - curries, stews, fish and seafood, soups, salads..... - I think you must have missed seeing this! Please do try us again next time you visit Cornwall.

“Overrated”
Reviewed November 11, 2012

Surprised by some of the reviews, as our experience was disappointing.

On arrival, the manageress was keen to get us seated. She was very quick to point out that we mustn't sit on a larger table, incase it got busy. This attitude was a little off putting, especially as the place was pretty empty. We are aware that the lady wants to make money, but a more subtle and welcoming approach would be desirable.

We ordered child's carvery and large carvery. We mistook the "large" carvery for the child's one.

We didn't feel it was good value for money and won't be returning

I am sorry your experience of Sandsifter was not a good one, and have already made the decision not to visit again. Unfortunately, as we were not made aware at the time, we did not have the opportunity to put things right. I would point out that we serve a roast dinner, not a carvery, the subtle difference being that the food is not sitting around in vats waiting to be dished out. Each roast is prepared to order, and in addition we make proper roasting pan gravy (hours in the preparation), our own sauces, and use the best quality locally reared meats. This does mean our costs are fairly high, but we prefer to serve quality rather than quantity - which is so often wasted in any case. That said, we would have been happy to let you have more had you asked.
With regard to the large tables in the booths, we do reserve these for larger parties, as would any restaurant. There is always a sign saying as much, but we accept that customers do not read every sign and I admit that it has caused some awkward moments. On Sundays, and any day during the summer, the restaurant can rapidly change from being empty to at capacity, and so we do need to keep those tables available for the amenity of our customers.

Reviewed September 26, 2012

Visited twice September 2012 during our two weeks holiday in St Ives.Found this place while walking along the beach at Hayle .Enjoyed it so much went back for a Sunday carvery. Both times friendly staff and great food. The carvery was the best I have ever eaten. Nice interior and lots of tables and benches outside. This place is dog friendly too!

“Great location”
Reviewed September 24, 2012 via mobile

We had Sunday lunch here, very nice food, well presented, nicely cooked. Good choice of specials and desserts. The staff were friendly and helpful, they kindly made us take away coffee so that we could drive round the coast for a view. Bet this place is buzzing with surfers in summer, sounds like they enjoy lots of live music events too.
If you go for Sunday lunch as a family they do a deal for 2 adult,2 kids meals plus lollipops for £25.00
