The Wellington Hotel

Set in the lovely Boscastle, The Wellington Hotel is clearly riding on its superb location but I just found it a rip off.

We were staying with people that live in Boscastle who dont dine there oftern because of the prices but we had a crab sandwich priced at £8 and a bowl of chips of £3. There was no doubt that the food was nice but I felt £12 for a sandwich with chips is not acceptable in the current climate and where its blatantly obvious they are fleecing locals and holiday makers.

We appreciate all feedback and we always consider all comments. I have therefore discussed this review with our Head Chef and have also looked at the cost of crab sandwiches at other comparable locations.
Firstly, we are pleased that you enjoyed your meal. As you will have seen from our menu, we use fresh, local and high quality ingredients in our food. We know all of our suppliers well and take great effort to ensure that their produce is of the highest quality and that we understand its provenance. Our approach in this area has recently been endorsed by The Sustainable Restaurant Association who recently rated us as one of the top restaurants in Cornwall for sustainability.
This applies equally to our crab sandwich where we use only the higher quality white meat rather than the cheaper brown meat. Our comparison with other locations offering the same level of quality puts our price at the lower end of the range. This is similar to the pricing on our other sandwiches that start at £5.00.
I am sure that you can find cheaper crab sandwiches where the filling contains frozen imported brown meat. As our goal is to provide high quality food, we will be higher in price but we always aim to provide good value. We would love for you to return, having tried a few crab sandwiches elsewhere in Cornwall, and to tell us which you thought was the best!

Going to Boscastle off-season, in awful weather, is the best way to see it! We were able to turn up on spec to one of very few places with rooms right by the harbour, and get two single rooms for only GBP45 each. The room was comfortable, warm, and had the usual mod-cons, although the wifi didnt work in my room, so I had to go to the very comfortable and well-appointed guest lounge to use it. The location is perfect, breakfast was big and tasty, and there is a friendly bar with a good selection of beers. It's probably absolutely heaving in summer, in the Hotel and in the entire town, but off-season, it was really excellent.

We came over here for a meal while we were staying in the nearby YHA. The place was deserted (I guess due to the time of year), but we had a great meal in the bar here. The girl who served us was very friendly and even warned us that if we ordered the risotto it would take a long time to cook. I would return for another meal here.

We had a lovely 1 night stay in the Wellington, in a Turret Room (Thomas Hardy Room). Dont be put off by the slightly shabby carpet on the staircase as the refurbishment of rooms is clearly going well and our room was beautiful, I couldn't fault anything(believe me thats unusual!). Staff were lovely as was the small dining room and breakfast. We will definitely go back! Once all refurbished it will be 5 star quallity. Quick, get there soon.

Room Tip: Turret Rooms are special

The staff here are amazing, very personable and they were all really helpful. We stayed in the the turret room (room 14, I think). It was spacious and there was plenty of light coming from the windows. King size bed with a very comfortable mattress. There's a bath in the bathroom but the shower was a bit small. We had a great steak on the first evening of our stay which was delicious and really good value for money. The long bar was a bit disappointing as we felt it could have done with a more appropriate makeover (after the flood) that would have married up with the rest of the hotel. Overall though, a great place to go to explore Boscastle and Tintagel and the South West Coastal path.

Room Tip: Definitely worth having one of the two rooms in the turret.
