Description: A charming gastro pub and pillar of the local community, The Turk's Head is a hive of activity serving gourmet British dishes. A distressed, country farm-style dining room is filled with natural light, while the bar area is dotted with squashy leather furnishings and rich wood panelling. Live jazz and comedy are staged indoors, and a tree-sheltered al fresco garden and kids' play area are offered during warmer weather. Expect all the familiar classics on the menu, as well as some adventurous, refined signature dishes.

If you want a proper pub in St Margarets this is the one..................decent beer and service - and the food looks good too although I've not eaten there..........yet!

“Oh, dear. Like so many.”

This was a fantastic pub, once. Heaving with regulars, a meeting place and a focus for the local community. Also had a few events in the hall next door. Okay it was dense with smoke and rough and read, but it was a proper pub - and at the weekend a steady line of bods could be seen making their way down the road to enjoy a good evening. Now, it's a gastro something or other, with an expensive menu, glacial staff and an internet corner.
Mid-week, early evening: met up with a friend for a quiet chat, thinking that it would be quiet these days. And then the football came on. 3 flat screen televisions positioned about the place, and an air full of noise. It was unbearable.
A few people were watching, but many got up and went into the 'eating area'. In the end, we were assisted by the manager to a table in the back room. He did sort of apologise, but only because he was never going to turn the telly down.
The food: thin soup, okay, wine, okay and overall, barring the sporty intrusion, the pub was pleasant enough with reasonable decor, but lacked that 'pubby' atmosphere.
Turk's Head is not somewhere that I would choose to return or invite someone to. And even though I'm sure it does brisk business in the summer with the lovely garden, there remains something desperate about the place.
Of course, it's the people who make a pub - here, there seemed such a disconnected feel, with all the different stuff going on and the deference to the noisiest, one suspects management is trying anything to attract the punters. Perhaps The Turk's Head does well at lunchtimes and Sundays, when it can be more of an eating place than a pub. But even there, I doubt it is exceptional. Pity, as it has a ready made clientèle on its doorstep.

“Fantastic service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2014

I hadn't been to the Turk's Head for a few years as I thought the service had deteriorated. I was pleasantly surprised recently on how much it had improved and hats off to Hayley who was a delight behind the bar. Keep it up Turks!
