Owner description: Stroll along a peaceful riverside road into secluded woodland gardens, to find a stunning 18th century interior design - and the principal art gallery for the borough of Richmond upon Thames. Orleans House has a rich and vibrant history, from the baroque Octagon room, which was designed by renowned architect James Gibbs, to a main gallery which hosts five temporary exhibitions each year - ranging from the historical to the contemporary.

By pure chance we saw the Richmond Literary Festival advertise a lecture at the Orleans House Stables this last Sunday. A bit tricky to find even if you use your satnav but the locals were very helpful to point the way. Tucked away and hidden Orleans House Gallery and Stables is a hidden gem. They have a very good lecture hall and in the Stables yard an unusual coffee & tea venue also providing meals in what was the former horse stables. We were able to see the current eclectic art exhibition as well. Well worth a visit.

Un undiscovered gem, hidden away in its own walled garden by Twickenham Riverside.
Current show Madge Gill: Medium & Visionary is extraordinary, not to be missed. Includes her masterpiece, a 36 x 5 ft long pen & calico drawing produced in a state of trance.

The Stables coffee shop is a delight too, great cakes and other treats, and healthy snacks.

Nearest station is St Margarets, a 15 minute brisk walk, otherwise a £10 cab from Richmond Station or catch a bus to Marble Hill Park, Crown Rd stop, and then a 5 minute stroll down towards the river. The setting is beautiful, new exhibitions every few months. Ferry from Ham is also available in December and then Spring/Summer, from just by Ham House.

Owned we think by the council. Good old building. Some baroque interior decoration and a few good pictures. Beware only open from April and closes in September. Not a bad site either.

The date of my visit was June 2009, not December 2010 - it didn't allow me to

I came here as part of work/work placement with some children from St Stephen's Junior School after spending the afternoon in Marble Hill Park. The art on display was some photography by a local artist - it was lovely! I remember the gallery being quite small, but perfectly formed.

The building itself reminded me of a horse paddock - very cute.
