“Definitely retro”
Reviewed November 19, 2012

Teddington is not quite London. Tucked away in a corner of the Thames, it's definitely a provincial enclave - not that that's a bad thing. This was clear from a large table of very overdressed diners (sparkly cocktail dresses and bow ties) who, we were told, were the local Dining Club. Mmmhhh, I thought... unless they're going to a ball afterwards, this looks sooooo provincial. But I digress...

The menu is fairly good value, with some excellent choices. The beetroot risotto with goat's cheese was out of this world and so was the beef stew, according to my husband. The pretentiously-named 'Gateau au Caramel' was a bit of a mish mash of British sticky toffee pudding and a French caramel cake and frankly, was a bit boring but the almond and peach slice looked delicious (no complaints on that front from our fellow diners). Good service from a mainly French crew. Definitely a good place to dine - and no need to dress up unless you really want to.

“Worth a visit in Teddington”
Reviewed November 19, 2012

Had an enjoyable evening there with my partner on 17 November. The ambience was welcoming and unpretentious, the service friendly and attentive, even on a very busy Saturday evening. The amuse bouche was a nice touch and the food we ordered broadly met our expectations. My only real quibble was with my lamb dish main course. At just shy of £22 I didn't think it offered value for money either in terms of portion size or quality - I left a lot of gristly fat on the plate. I mentioned this to the waiter who said he'd pass this on to the chef. I heard no more but I assume he did. Would I go back? Definitely but will probably stick to the value-for-money set menu next time.

“Style over substance”

Perfectly fine food but expensive for what is pretty ordinary cooking. If you like to eat in cool places then it's a great find. If you want really good cooking, then look elsewhere....

Very sorry you were disappointed and the food was not to your taste. We hate our customers to feel let down in any way.

It is quite unusual for anyone to complain about the standard of cooking at the Retro and we feel compelled to refer again to our Good Food Best London Restaurant Award as proof of our record in keeping the majority of our diners very happy!

Do hope you'll give us another try sometime and let us know if anything is not right. We are always very keen and very happy to change anything that doesn't come up to our usual high standards.

“A little gem”

Lovely restaurant, really inviting and stands out head and shoulders among the many 'bog-standard' places on the same street. Foos was flawless and the menu well balanced but in true French style. will definitely be back.

“Above average French style restaurant in Teddington”
Reviewed November 3, 2012

Our first visit to the restaurant for a family birthday. Have looked with interest for years at the menu, and decided to go for a lunch. Have read the varied reviews for this restaurant, and ours will be a favourable review. The lunch set menu offered a good choice - the food was good, well presented and well served. We had 3 courses and wine, including service (and bread which is charged additionally but clearly annotated on the menu, for those reviewers who clearly don't read the menu) for £86.00 which for the standard of food and service is good value. We will return and are more than happy to recommend a local business and wish them many more years of success.
