This visit to the Premier Inn Bath Road got off to a poor start when we arrived at 8pm and were told that one of our two reservations had been cancelled! This led to annoying 15 minute, internal , inquest by the hotel who finally provided a room – but without explaining how they’d messed up.
Adding insult to injury they then allocated my family of 4 two rooms at diametrically opposite ends of the (large) hotel meaning we had to communicate with the kids by phone to arrange to meet!
Administrative blunders aside this remains a good choice of overnight hotel at Heathrow. The combination of low cost, onsite parking option and reasonable location make it hard to beat. This is about the fifth time we’ve stayed here. Last year we tried the Radisson Edwardian (still a contender) but this time the logic of using the Premier Inn won out.
Firstly, cost is compelling. A twin room at £39 and a second twin with 15 days parking for £109.This isn’t as cheap as the more distant, Heathrow Central Travelodge at £19 but , on balance, it’s a better package.
Secondly the rooms are reasonably well appointed – not far short of what many 4 star hotels currently offer. Configurations include double and twin and you can squeeze one under 16 in a room for free. TV channel choice is good, tea and coffee maker is convenient and bathrooms are bright and modern.
The hotel also benefits from a decent atmosphere in the atrium. It has the buzz of a place where everyone is excited about their forthcoming holiday. It’s a bit like a departure lounge – perhaps they should have a Duty Free shop. There are plenty of options for food and drink – more than you’d ever expect at a budget price. There is a bar area with a wide range of beers and wines and a bar menu. They often show big screen sports events projected onto the walls of the atrium area. There’s a more expensive restaurant plus a Costa coffee bar. Additionally there are vending machines. One way or another you should find something to fit your budget – which is important since there are no other eateries within reasonable walking distance.
Breakfast here is also a plus. When we’ve stayed elsewhere we’ve often stopped in for the buffet breakfast (about £8.50). A nice, long, lazy breakfast is a good way to start the holiday and there’s a good choice here in a comfortable setting.
The Park and Fly option is also good. You can park in the hotel car park. Ideally I’d prefer to park off-site and get a free shuttle to the terminals but out of season there’s usually plenty of space on-site. I’m not sure about the new pay and display arrangement. I didn’t get any kind of parking pass. I assume the on-site parking attendant checks car numbers against the hotels database of paying customers. On return I just drove out without the reassurance of having my final charges checked.
Finally, one of the benefits of staying here is the relative proximity of the Heathrow Free Transport Zone. Rather than paying over the odds for a not-too-frequent Hopper service you can walk for 10 mins towards Harlington Corner (the next bus stop which is visible from the Premier Inn). At that point all buses going into the airport are free and are far more frequent than the Hopper. This assumes that you are prepared to walk for ½ a mile (and, eventuially, back again). On a sunny day it’s pleasant, even with wheeled luggage. On a wet day you could catch a red bus immediately outside the hotel or a taxi. Either would probably work out better than the Hopper for a family.
