The Great House At Sonning
Reviewed June 28, 2013

Sorry to say but the experience staying at the Great House was anything but Great, which was a shame because the staff I came into contact with were very pleasant and friendly.
My room was small, very dated, had a musty smell and was not the cleanest, my window opened directly onto the busy main road and I mean literally onto the main road which was extremely noisy to the point that I could not open it for the noise which made the room very stuffy.
I decided to have a bar meal there to avoid trying to battle with the continuous traffic going past, I ordered their burger and chips and to be honest that's exactly what came, there was no dressing or a bit of side salad just a couple of lettuce leaves and a slice of tomato on the burger, for £8.50 I did find this very disappointing, maybe I should of known what the quality was like as I was the only person eating there at the time.
The bed was very uncomfortable, probably the worst nights sleep I have ever had and needless to say was woken up at 5.45 a.m. with the noise of the traffic. I went to have breakfast a bit hesitant following my burger experience but found their buffet breakfast was very good, plenty of choice and helped yourself. However even though I enjoyed breakfast I would not stay at this hotel again.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else.

The hotel interior is kitsch overdone 1980s paint effects.... Unfortunately I think it was last painted in the 80s and some othe floors and walls looked as if they were last cleaned in the 80s too. The breakfast was rather worse than one i recently enjoyed in a travel lodge. The draft beer served in the uncomfortable bar was stale. The position ensures it attracts custom ....little else about this hotel does.

We had previously been to this hotel and found it first class, it is in a lovely location and rooms are really comfy.

We only booked in for one night and were disappointed that the restaurant was only open for a set Italian meal/gourmet night, not what everyone wants!

On our last visit in May we were very disappointed, we had a horrendous night, with culminated in the police being called and which carried on until 2:30 am and which all kicked off again at 6:30.
We did not even receive an apology from the Manager, despite contacting him twice. This place has gone down greatly in our esteem and won't be visiting again, will try French Horn next time.

Room Tip: Pick quiet neighbours!

We stayed here one night as The Bull Inn was full.
We had an executive double; which was almost a suite.
The breakfast was buffet and had a lovely selection of fresh fruit salad.
The one criticism l would make is that only one key card is given per room.
If your partner leaves the room; the lights all go out and you are left in the dark until they return and activate them again.
There was no natural light in our bathroom. This renders it very unsafe.
This could easily be overcome by issuing two cards per couple.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the car park as it can be noisy.

We had an executive suite for an overnight stay as we were visiting the Mill at Soning dinner theatre. Reception friendly and given directions to our room in an outbuilding which we parked car just outside. The room was dark and not helped by dark brown furniture considerably older than me and I'm eighty. The walls had numerous plaster cracks and were desperately in need of repair and repaint. The bed had a blanket which was a surprise as duvets ( comforters ) are pretty standard in all but cheap B & B's. Though smallish it proved quite comfortable. The bathroom was cold but there was a heated towel rail that could be switched on and would warm the room up after a hour or so. Towels were fine and the usual supplies of shower gel etc.
Breakfast next morning was buffet only and as the hot food was kept in large metal containers, I can't comment on it's taste as I refuse to eat food pre cooked ( when? ) and then stored in these conditions, which affects the taste are possible ideal breeding conditions for bacteria.
The toast, butter , jam and coffee that we did have were all OK. Service was perfunctory though we were greeted by most staff when walking through the hotel. The garden furniture was well worn and in need of refurbishment and some was roped off and being treated. The hotel is right by the river and a walk along the towpath was enjoyable. This is a potentially very good hotel but needs money spent to bring it up to scratch.

Room Tip: Check out the room before unloading your cases.

We have been married for just over a year now and because of personal circumstances decided to have our marriage blessed. We had the reception at The Great House Sonning who organised everything for us at relatively short notice and the staff there could not have done more to have made it a day to remember.

The food and table setting were just perfect and the overnight accommodation and breakfast for those of us that also stayed the night was just a great ending to a glorious day.
