The Bull is an excellent place to visit just outside Reading. The beers are good, the food is excellent and staying the night is even better. The full English breakfast is a perfect way to start the day.

If you have found this charming Inn for the first time you are in for a treat.
If you go there for a drink and/or meal you will not be disappointed but if you can book a room and stay there you are LUCKY indeed !
You will be treated like a V.I.P. from the moment you arrive.
The entire staff are outstanding.
We did not meet the owners/licensees but they must be very special to keep such staff.
It feels as though they are one big happy family.
Katie,Tiph, the barman, the chefs, the lovely waitresses and Peter ,the assistant manager combined to do all jobs; meet and greet, serve etc etc.
We stayed overnight in room 1 to break our journey from Norwich to Brixham.
We tried to stay for our return journey as we loved it so much, but we had left it too late to book.
Peter then kindly booked us in to The Great House, nearby (see separate review)
It can be difficult to park at The Bull as it's so popular, but park where you can and move when the lunchtime crowd have dispersed.
Overall the best Hotel/Inn we have ever stayed in.
Based on 40 years experience.
It won the regional 'Inn of the Year' and came second nationally.
We would like to stay at the ' winners ' because we could not see how it could be beaten.
There is a beautiful church behind The Bull with a walk through to The Thames at it's best.
Peter.....if you want second parents/grandparents...we would be honoured !

Room Tip: All rooms look very nice but can highly recommend Room 1 (executive room )

Having sampled wonderful fayre at The Bull before, I took two German friends here to taste good beer and a good light lunch in what is one of the most atmospheric historical bars in England. They were not disappointed. The wisteria had just bloomed and the cameras were snapping. Inside this 16th century wonder is the perfect pub restaurant. I had the parma ham with asparagus with a duck egg... sublime – although the asparagus was a little too al dente for my palette. Wolfgang had the 'jerk-spiced home-cooked ham' sandwich and Suzanne had a huge bacon and brie sandwich. Washed down with perfectly kept London Pride. A great experience, followed by a walk around the amazing church (which still owns the pub apparently...) as it was built as a hostelry for the workers who built the medieval part of the church.

Arrived at 7.30pm on Bank Holiday Monday, check in very pleasant, young Lady took us to our room and showed us the fire exit etc. Although booked a standard room via Late Rooms we were upgraded to a Superior room and it was fabulous. Lovely bar downstairs for a drink and supper and the breakfast in the morning was of a very high standard too. Location very good in a beautiful village next to a church and close to the Thames for river walks. We chose the Hotel as it was only 25mins from Heathrow but could have been in another Country!!

I had previously visited this pub infrequently and this recent visit was for a relatives birthday. We visited on a Monday lunchtime so there were no crowds but the pub had a good amount of diners to give some atmosphere. The menus I believe have recently been changed so there is a standard menu, a specials menu and a two course menu. I chose macaroni cheese - it came piping hot with a home made onion bhaji and a huge sliced tomato with basil and olive oil, it was very tasty. My dining companions had trout on a bed of broad beans and veg and the pie of the day with roast potatoes and veg. We all enjoyed our respective choices. I couldn't quite manage all of my macaroni cheese and the waitress was more than happy to wrap up my leftovers for me to take home - yes it was that good I wanted to reheat my leftovers for tea. When it came to pudding, there were several choices to choose from and my companions both had apple and rhubarb strudel with ice cream, whilst I went for chocolate brownie and clotted cream and, yes it was gorgeous, I ate it all, nothing left. The bill with a soft drink, glass of prosecco and half a Guinness came to £70, good value for money given the quality of the meals. I am now trying to work out how to go back next week so I can have the same items again . . .

We recently visited the Bull Inn for a mid-week evening out with friends and found that whilst the atmosphere was nice, the beer was pleasant and the service was quite good, the meal portions were a little on the small side and the quality of the food was very average. The prices were also a bit expensive when you consider the what we had to eat.
It's our view that the Bull Inn is now living off its past reputation and its location, and unfortunately we will seriously think twice before returning to the Bull Inn in a hurry.
