We were recently told of the existence of this place. It's great. Almost destroyed by fire in 1995 the building has been restored in the last few years. It now houses not only Staircase House but the Stockport Story museum (free entry), the Tourist Information office and a nice cafe. Parts of the house date back to 1460 but each room is set up to show life in a particular period of history from the 1600s to WWII. There is an excellent audio guide at no extra charge and you can touch everything and try your hand at writing with a quill pen. All the staff were friendly, particularly in the cafe. We will go back as we did not have time to go in the free museum.
